Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

Plain Sails are an indie/alternative band. The concept behind the video was to keep it as simple as possible – we wanted the viewers to get to know who we were without confusing them with complex plots and narratives. It was important for us that people get to know who the band members are and their roles within the band before we branch out and experiment with deeper plots within our videos. We felt the black and white visual supports this vision further still, lending more impact and clarity and allowing the song to really do the talking. The song itself was written a few years ago and is lyrically based upon an experience Andrew (lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter) had with a close friend who lost a family member suddenly. Musically it takes inspiration from a number of sources the writer grew up listening to, forming his own unique style with the underlying inspiration in the background.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

From a writing perspective, Andrew (lead vocals, guitar & songwriter) draws heavily on personal experience. His writing style has matured and developed over the years and has a degree of metaphoric content allowing the listener to attribute meaning personal to them to the song – something his influences have done in their writing and something that means a lot to him. To be able to make a connection to the listener on a personal level is his aim, whilst lyrically landing his subject matter in a way that appeals universally. As a band, constructing the song musically and composing is a team effort, with all inputting from their various perspectives. Their goal is to create melodies and hooks that will instantly appeal and stay with the listener, and that compliment the song as a whole. Their ethos is “everything in it’s right place” and each section of the song is carefully considered and constructed with a view to the track as a whole.
