Tell us your real names, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.

My real name is Simon de Wit, I was born on April 19th in 1997 born in Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands. I had an awesome childhood! When I was about 3 years old, we moved to the north of Holland, where we lived on an old farm. Our nearest neighbors were like 200 meters away, so we could play on the land, make noise, and make music as loud as we wanted.

Tell us about your music career, your band name, musical background, experience and skills.

I started playing guitar when I was around 10 years old. After one year, I started singing too. Since then I’ve been playing. I took lessons for about 4 years, then we moved to the city. It was around this time I started writing songs with a friend, just for fun.

Two years ago we (my friend, my brother and I) participated in an online talent contest, organized by one of the most well-known radio DJ’s of the Netherlands, Giel Beelen. We made it (from 1300 submissions) to the last 25.

After that, I decided it was time to focus on music. I experienced how much I liked writing songs, playing music and finding my way in the business. I started producing and writing myself, watching hundreds of videos on YouTube. After 1 year of messing around, I felt like my skills were good enough to release something.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

Imagine walking down the street, and you make eye contact with a boy or girl, and you just feel a connection. Sparks are flying, the world stops spinning for a second and then both of you keep walking and its gone. ‘Hey Girl’ is about exactly that moment. Describing the feelings, imagining how it could be to be together, and what you would say if the two of you would ever meet again: ‘Hey girl, don’t you need someone to hold you warm at night?’

I tried to give the song a positive and uplifting feel, because in that moment of eye contact you usually feel butterflies in your stomach.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

I’m really for doing everything myself. I’ve written, recorded and produced this song myself. I play the instruments myself. I sing myself. In order to create a song that sounds completely like you want, you should carry out (or at least be involved in) every step of the creation.

About my ups and downs: I’ve only been in this biz for about 2 years, so I wouldn’t say I’ve experienced a lot of ups and downs. Sure, I’ve often heard no’s, but I feel like everything I’ve tried till now worked out. One of the ups was definitely the response to my first single. It topped the Spotify viral charts in the Netherlands for about 3 days straight.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

I’m a solo act, so this will be short: it’s just me. I play, sing, write, record and produce everything. I wrote and recorded this song in my garage (which I turned into a home studio).

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

My experiences till now are very positive. I haven’t experienced any negative things and I’m not getting discouraged if for example a song doesn’t do as well as the previous one, or a blog turns down my song. I really do make this music because this is what I like and makes me happy.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

I get inspiration from everything around me: my own experiences, my friends’ experiences, other songs, movies, the internet, whatever. What inspires me to keep writing? I don’t really know. All I know, is that getting out of bed, and messing around on the piano and coming up with a new melody is the best thing in the world. The feeling I get when I find a beautiful lyric, melody or chord progression really makes my day (or week haha). It would be my dream to be able to wake up and make songs, and do that every day.

.

.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

I don’t believe there is a strict formula or something (verse-chorus-bridge always does nice), but there is one thing that must be there: catchiness. If a melody, chord progression or lyric is catchy, it can be a hit. I’d say the more accessible it sounds, the more it will be played on radio, but sometimes weird songs become hits too.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.

Enjoy everything, live in the moment. By that I don’t mean you shouldn’t think about your future, that is a fun and smart thing to do, but be present in the moment. Nowadays, we’re always on our phones and doing multiple things at once. Try to focus 100% on every moment and enjoy it to the fullest.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

From one upcoming artist to another: keep on rocking, a ‘no’ doesn’t mean shit, trust your gut. And don’t forget to have fun! 🙂

.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

I’ve released 5 singles, which have accumulated over 600.000 streams on Spotify (bit S\O to Spotify). I haven’t toured (yet), I don’t have any awards (yet).

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio. I always start with the melodies, and then I’ll try to find words that fit. I try to start of with what I like to call typical ‘verse-melodies’, which feel like they are going to build up to something. Most of the time I will have some sort of pre-chorus, and then a chorus which will either be vocals or a melody played by an instrument.

The moment I write lyrics, I record them immediately. It usually doesn’t sound great at this time, but this is just so I won’t forget the melodies and I can move forward in the writing process. Once I’ve finished the first verse and chorus, I always get stuck. I will always finish the second part of the song on another day. Once it’s finished, I record all the vocals again, until they feel and sound right.

Name five biggest artists that you look up to like idols.

Charlie Puth, Jon Bellion, Jeremy Zucker, blackbear and EDEN.

Charlie Puth: this man is an amazing songwriter, producer and singer. I really look up to his musical and production skills.

Jon Bellion: I admire his songwriting skills. His songs made me really think about concepts you can write about, and he does this really good I think.

Jeremy Zucker: his production is mental. Sounds really crispy and unique. I hope I will be on that level one day.

Blackbear: consistence and catchy melodies. I’ve listened to him for years now, and I think his melodies are always really catchy.

EDEN: the emotion he puts in this songs is crazy. When I record a song, I always think of with how much emotion EDEN sings, and then I start recording.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.

I haven’t collaborated with any artist yet, but if I would have the chance, definitely with one of the above.

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

My happiest day, that’s a really tough question. I’m usually very happy. I’d said every time I finish a new song. That feeling is amazing!

The saddest day of my life was definitely the day one of my best friends passed away.
