Matt Davis

Tell us your real names, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.

My name is Matthew Davis but everyone calls me Matt. I was born in Huntington Beach California which is thirty minutes from Los Angeles. Growing up in SoCal was definitely a unique experience. The weather was always warm and the beach was usually just a few steps away. Living in this beach city people tended to be more sporty then artistic which made me standout, not always for the best. Regardless of my social situation being positive or negative I always had, “my friends to bring me up” which is a lyric in my song “Life” and it is on the same EP as “I’m Just Here Rockin.“  As a child I grew up around some really funny characters which made me the kid who was always laughing.

Tell us about your music career, your band name, musical background, experience and skills.

When I was fifteen I started working with a record producer named Mark Vogel. I recorded a single with him called “Let’s Wake Up” which gained popularity in southern California around 2013. When I graduated high school I went to Musicians Institute in Hollywood but ended up dropping out because I was getting a lot of auditions for TV/film. I started really focusing on acting and auditioning almost everyday. Although acting was a passion of mine I starting neglecting my music career because of the demands of auditioning. I decided to come to a college in New York City called The Collective School Of Music because I wanted to focus on  improving my skills as a musician. I also started playing acoustic versions of my songs at bars in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Right now I’m putting together a full band show with a couple background singers and possibly dancers. I still have a few acoustic shows coming up soon. The next one is November 8 at 8:30pm @Hell Phone in Brooklyn.

There isn’t a time in my life where I didn’t want to be a singer. When I was a little kid I would force my mom to drive me to workshops in Los Angeles so I could learn how to write songs, perform on stage and start to know more about the music industry. Having this perpetual dream for singing put me on the path to learn piano and guitar. Getting familiar with these instruments helped me start writing songs. Songwriting really is my life put into melodies and it has been a way I express myself through out the years.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

This song is about getting out of a negative place and not letting anyone take me out of my that mindset. Going through life letting in fun and loving energy and blocking out anything destructive.

I wanted the production of this song to be smooth but still something you can groove to.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

As a singer/songwriter rejection can be an obstacle but the key is to listen to the constructive criticism and forget about the destructive criticism. I always remind myself music is opinion based. Someone can hate a song that another person tells me is their favorite. It all depends on taste. Sometimes my statistically most popular song is disliked by critics and industry. At times it is discouraging but having an encouraging fan base, great friends and family keeps you going in a positive direction. I’m always really grateful for encouraging comments and messages! I don’t know if people realize how it really brings me through the hectic disappointing days.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

I recorded this song with a music producer that goes by the name of ESTICO who is also in a duo band called ESTICO and Griff. Recording this song with him was a really fun creative process.

I filmed and edited the music video for this song. I wanted this video to be artistic but simple. In the beginning I got a shot of a bee pollinating a couple flowers which symbolizes fertility, growth and I added quiet Om sounds which represented finding peace. That is what the song was written about. Finding a place in your life that’s positive, fun and good. Learning to not let anyone take you away from that place and letting the people that bring you down not effect you anymore.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

Being the best at your craft is more important than anything else. Don’t let people fool you into believing you have to look or sound a certain way to make it. Really focus on skill. Make every aspect of your act the best you can be. Play gigs that match your genre so you can gain a following. Don’t just play anywhere just to play. Always believe in yourself even when people put you down. Try new things and don’t care what people think. Don’t be ashamed of failure. It has been one of my best teachers throughout the years. Don’t keep trying something or working with someone that’s not showing you results. Time is precious.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

I usually start playing around with a new chord progression or an old one that’s catching my ear in a different way and the chords start looking like words and emotions. I record a lot of music at home for Youtube and Social Media but I recorded this EP at two different studios in Los Angeles.
