Jake Arvonen, Australia, 18.06.1994 – I have played guitar from as early as I can remember, and it wasn’t until I was 13 years old that I started to go and watch live bands. Every time I would see a band live, I would be amazed watching the drummer, and I would always think “that looks like the best fun in the world!” So I started learning drums, joined a band, and after my first experience on stage playing the drums, I knew that I would do this for the rest of my life.
Maurice Webb, Australia 19.012.1994 – I always looked up to my older sister who loved music and taught me how to play drums. From there I picked up the bass and have been passionate about music ever since.
Tell us about your music career, your band name, musical background, experience and skills.
We all met at JMC Academy, studying a Bachelor of Music. While at JMC, we worked as session musicians recording and performing with various singers across Sydney, and quickly made a name for ourselves.
During our time as session musicians, we noticed that in popular music, the musicians are often unnoticed behind the shadow of the singer, so we decided to form ‘Chasing Giants’ and change this.
We chose the name Chasing Giants, as it is our mission statement. A giant is someone who has had great influence in the industry, and so we ‘chase’ those people, following in their footsteps to make a lasting impact just as they have.
We all write music and have unique talents. Jake is firstly a drummer but taught himself piano and now writes the music for many of Chasing Giants songs. Ben has mastered the guitar and can also play the banjo. Maurice is a talented bassist and unique lyricist.
Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.
Our genre is RnB/Rock, and has been described as rock music that makes you want to dance. The concept for “Till The Night Ends” was to bring back the classic funk and disco from Michael Jackson’s ‘Off The Wall’ album, as well as the live instrumentation.
Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.
Our vision for what we want Chasing Giants to achieve is extremely ambitious and so we face a lot of naysayers (haters), a lot of the time! But bringing credit to the unseen, talented musicians that grace the audience’s ears without them even knowing is important to us and fills us with purpose!
Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.
Branko Prezo – Producer
We met Branko at JMC Academy where he worked as a lecturer, bandmaster and guitar tutor. We knew Branko was a fantastic producer so we jumped at the chance to work with him after Chasing Giants formed and started writing and recording original music.
Joe Sharratt – Engineer/Producer
Joe recorded drums and mixed both Bad News and Till the Night Ends. We also met Joe at JMC where he worked as an audio lecture and studio engineer. He recorded many of our individual session work with other singers and musicians at JMC Academy. After Chasing Giants formed we all suggested Joe as our number 1 recording engineer and couldn’t wait to work with him again.
C Major and Maxine Champion – After attending a Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston tribute show, we were mesmerized by their talent and on stage chemistry. We had to work with them!
Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.
Chasing Giants have been in the music industry for 2 years, since then we have released 2 singles and two additional tracks. We have toured across NSW Australia, performing at different festivals and venues. On top of this we have built an amazing network called ‘Team CG’, which are all of our live singers, recording artists, photographers, graphic designers, producers, engineers, the list goes on, all people who we work with or have worked with and do an amazing job.
Our goal is to monopolize the music industry. We will write the biggest portion of hit songs for the longest time, we will sign the most talented artists possible and mentor them to their greatest potential. We will create a worldwide appreciation for songwriters, musicians (and eventually all artists alike) and a network to harbour and nurture all of their fantastic work and bring as much recognition to it as possible.
Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.
We write for the people that can’t. That is to say so often one of us will come by someone with a fascinating story that seems completely relatable to our lives and the lives of others, but can’t themselves write it into music. So that is what inspires us and our songs; telling stories that people can relate to and find comfort in.
Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.
There are many factors that can contribute to a ‘hit’ song that may not even be a part of the song itself, example, fame status of the artist that released it, money paid for promotion, when the song was released. If you asked what the secret behind making a ‘great’ song is, then the answer is simply great music, great melody and great message.
Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.
We would like to tell our fans to embrace the opportunities life gives, and to understand one another. Take advantage of what living in our time has to offer and most importantly, have fun!
Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.
Set goals and implement actions to achieve those goals.
Set weekly meetings to plan what needs to be done and check progress.
Be accountable to someone and have mentors or inspirational people in your life.
Look after your body.
Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.
At the moment, we have released 2 singles (‘Bad News’ & ‘Till The Night Ends’) and are just about to finish recording our Debut EP. We have toured across the East Coast of Australia supporting: MeWithoutYou, Letters to Lions and The Spindrift Saga. We are planning our first headline tour following the release of our EP, so stay tuned for that early 2018!
In terms of awards, the fact that we get to bring our best friends up on stage with us is an award we happily receive every show.
We are currently at round 3/3 in a battle of the bands competition called Emergenza. Both round 1 and round 2, were judged off crowd votes, and we came 1st place in both! The only real recognition we seek is from our audiences, as that is who we are playing for, so it was amazing to get that from 2 different crowds.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.
Each song comes in its own unique way but in general, this is how it happens. We write with just piano and vocals as we believe any good song should sound great with just that simple arrangement. Firstly we will have a chord progression on the piano which will inspire the hook of the song. This gives us the overall vibe that we are going for with the song. Next we will flesh out verse music and melody and lastly we fit lyrics to the melody. We pretty much always have an idea for the kind of voice we want to sing the song so next we scour the music scene for that voice and take them into the studio with our gun producer Branko.
Name five biggest artists that you look up to like idols.
Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.
Happiest Day – Happiest day was when we discovered the gym, fact is, you can’t pump out a bangar without pumping iron first!
Saddest Day – Well, we have very few sad days seeing as though Anytime Fitness is everywhere and open 24/7… but if we had to pick one, cardio day is pretty sad.
