Tell us your real names, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.
The Encounters are a three-piece alternative/pop band made up of Lewin Riddell lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist from Perth, Western Australia. Callum Robertson lead guitarist and back up vocalist from Perth, Western Australia and Cristian Galindo the drummer, who also grew up in Perth!

Tell us about your music career, your band name, musical background, experience and skills.
Callum and Lewin met early on in high school where they first formed as a pop/punk band together called Sweet Side Effect. Lewin grew up learning drums and guitar and studied contemporary music at university after high school. It wasn’t until Sweet Side Effect had a change in line up that left them demanding a new vocalist that he stepped up to take on the roll as a lead vocalist.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.
Our genre is alternative/pop and we try keep it to that although we are influenced by heaps of different styles and genres and often those influences come through. We are obsessed with 80s pop music and new wave bands at the moment and we’ve really drawn from those sounds. In our latest single ‘seventeen’ we tried bringing these 80s influences into a more modern context, which is hopefully something you can hear. In our upcoming self-titled EP which comes out 20/11/2017 we delve further into this sound.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

We all love writing and playing music so whenever we are doing that we are at our happiest. The music that we have released and the shows that we’ve played have definitely been some of our greatest highlights. Living in Western Australia has definitely highlighted its challenges. Being the most isolated city in the world it makes it hard to tour, which is something we very much would like to do.

.

.

.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

We recorded ‘seventeen’ in two parts. We tracked guitars and synths and the vocals at our home studio at Lewin’s house. We then took the track to Rada Studio where we worked with audio engineer and producer Matt Gio. We tracked drums with Matt and he did our final mix. It was then sent off to William Bowden who mastered the track for us.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.
The band was only fully formed with Cristian joining the lineup in 2016 but we’ve all been gigging and writing long before then as part of different projects. In the time we’ve been together we’ve played a few shows around Perth including a Hyperfest festival where we shared the stage with the likes of Amy Shark, Allday and Nicole Millar. We’ve only released two singles so far but both have been received really well, we are really looking forward to the release of our first EP at the end of this month. After this EP our goal will be to drop more new music, we’ve written tones of songs which we are just holding onto release at the right time. We also hope to take our music outside of Australia.

.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

Writing is almost a therapeutic thing for us. When we write it is usually about something we’ve just experienced and it’s a way of expressing how we feel. It’s often something that’s happened to us in our lives that inspires an idea for a song.

.

.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

Write something that means something to you because chances are it will also mean something to someone else. I think if a song is authentic and the music is creative there will always be people who want to listen.

.

.

.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.

We have some of the most supportive fans! Fans that have stuck around with us from before The Encounters had fully formed and we are so grateful to share our journey with those people. We can’t wait to share this new EP with them and we’re looking forward to what’s to come.

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.
Do it because you love it! It’s a hard industry to crack so be persistent, be patient and have a bit of steel about you. Take your music seriously, but don’t take yourselves too seriously!

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.
We’ve written a lot of songs as a band. Too many to even remember. We haven’t had a career as such as this band. It’s something we’re still working on and hoping to achieve in the near future!

List Radio or TV Stations that are airing your songs and blogs that have featured you as well and send message to them via this platform.

Born Music Online, Concert Crap. We’ll be featured on a local radio station called RTRFM on the day of our EP Launch in our hometown Perth.

.

.

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

It always varies. Sometimes Callum will come up with an idea musically and he’ll give it to Lewin who will write lyrics over the top. Sometimes one of us will write a full song and we’ll all get together and make any tweaks to polish it up. It’s always different for us!

.

.

.

Name five biggest artists that you like.

We like too many artists and it always changes for us, but right now our 5 would be The Cure, The Smiths, Michael Jackson, Coldplay and Frank Ocean.

.

.

.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.

We’ve never collaborated with another artist. We’re very meticulous when it comes to writing and recording and it’s very much a process that we like to keep between the three of us. I think if it was the right artist at the right time we would definitely love to collaborate!

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

One of our happiest days was when we played a festival called ‘HyperFest’. That was a real step up for us.

.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.

We would probably be smart with it. Maybe invest in property, buy some musical gear and fund a tour!
