Tell us your real names, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.

My real full name is Eshani Chandrashekar and my country of birth is India. I was born on September 13th.  My childhood experience was quite confusing and difficult. My parents were shifting between India and Dubai. I did a bit of schooling in India as well before I moved to Dubai. Had my fair share of being bullied.  Competition never ceased to exist and it all started just as a child. When my family and I were trying to move to Dubai, it was very difficult for us to manage. The struggle was real. So, naturally as I started school in Dubai, bullying was a major issue that most of us go through I believe and mine was pretty intense. Overall though, it helped me grow into liking music so much more. Despite all the negativity. My parents were always by my side. It was hard but my music and singing was the only thing that kept me going.

Tell us about your music career, your band name, musical background, experience and skills.

My music career officially began in 2012. I began singing by doing covers and one of the first covers that I did was “Stay” by Rihanna but with a twist. I used my ethnic background as an Indian and infused elements of it into the song.  It was and is one of the few covers that I’ve done that gave me the confidence and made me realise that this is it even though it wasn’t that great. I initially focused on doing covers that I never put out because I always thought there was more room for improvement. However, I decided to explore my vocal range and would sit day in and day out practicing singing by listening to different artists. I was always interested in the learning aspect of music. Mostly, to grow more vocally and as a singer-songwriter.  Since I’ve always been a solo artist, my band name has always been my real name, Eshani.

I would participate in school competitions and plays when I was younger.

Took up vocal lessons for 6 months and I completed my Grade 1 with distinction in Opera singing.

Performed at various events and one of them included singing at a pageant I was a part of in 2015.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

My genre of music is Pop with RnB. The concept behind the track ‘Babycakes’ was quite interesting because I wrote the song when I was inspired by this horror tv series called ‘American Horror Story’ and I think in one of the seasons there was a dialogue that was shared between 2 people and one of the actresses looked at the other and said ‘But babycakes, it’s only a matter of time’ or something along those lines. Hence, the word babycakes stuck and I wrote the song when relating it to an issue that I had gone through. Putting people in their place. As for the concept of the music video, my team and I wanted to show how being in charge of yourself and in control with power when you are at your most vulnerable helps you let go of unwanted people in your life. No time for drama. So, by depicting the (what I’d like to call) “Death bunnies” as my alter egos and I in the position of power and renaissance, puts the person that did me wrong in his or her place.

“clinging to me like a parasite, let me tell you you’re not worthwhile”

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

As a musician I always love learning different ways to sing vocally and expand my range and experiment and write more music. It’s hard to break into the industry. Being an Indian living in Dubai, I’m neither here nor there. It’s the hardest thing to do. You work towards your dreams and there’s always something that brings you down. I’ve had my own share of ups and downs. Ups being the fact that I managed to release my first single last year with the help of my producer and the fact that I released my second single about a week ago.  The downside however, I couldn’t release anything for an entire year due to certain issues and as they say, with each song you put out, you expect certain results but in turn get disappointed because it was nowhere close to what you expected. Expectations lead to disappointments and rejections too. It makes you lose hope. But, I always looked at the bigger picture. It’s all about the music. It’s all about learning more.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

My music producer is the best. I’m sure everyone says that. But, he has honestly been the best thing that has ever happened to my music career. His name is Mohammad Rayan Bailouni and he has been with me in this business for about a year now. He gets me as an artist and knows exactly the kind of music that suits my persona. He guides me in the best way and I learn so much about music and the industry from him. Recording ‘Babycakes’ was the best. He knew where I got the inspiration from and immediately knew how the song should come about and made sure that I brought in the personality and emotions when recording.

The music video director for the track is honestly really talented. His name is Mustafa Ismail aka Freek. He was referred to me by my producer. I checked out his previous work which was really dope and we discussed ideas and it just came together so well. We picked the locations. He decided on what he wanted it to look like and how he wanted to bring about the scenes and we made it happen.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

Technically, I’ve been in the music industry for about 4 years. But, I started writing my music about 2 years ago. I would do covers before that. My first original released last year and my experience has been enlightening I suppose. So much to learn.  The good and bad. Still trying to figure out more of myself, my music and my sound and where I’m headed. However, my future goal is to be known as one of the most influential artists of all time. A woman of substance.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

Life and its experiences. I watch artists sing and observe the techniques they use and that motivates me to compose and learn more. Writing is just feelings. It’s what I feel and how every emotion comes through and the writing and singing just flows with the mood.

Dear upcoming artists, It is going to be hard. The journey isn’t easy. But, I promise you that the lessons you learn throughout your journey to where you want to be is worth so much more than when you reach your goals. The learning bit helps you grow and understand so much about music and what all it has to offer. Not just music though, you tend to grow as a person and that will take you a long way. Own your music and stand out. Because fitting in never works out. Sing your heart out and you’ll be heard.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

My music career is my life. I eat, breathe and do everything music related as it’s all I think about day and night. I have released 2 singles so far and I am currently working on releasing an album soon. Recognition or awards I might have obtained would be the fact that I got recently signed as a vocalist on a really BIG label which I’m going to keep under wraps (secrets are not meant to be revealed as yet). Also, I won the Miss talented title of a pageant that I participated in. As for tours, that would be THE DAY I make my debut and Ive got a lot to learn before I get there but it’s definitely an experience I cant wait to share with the world.

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

The happiest day of my life was when my first single released called ‘Hazy’. It was the best feeling in the world because I finally got to put out my emotions into my music for people to hear. It was a small achievement but an achievement by itself. The saddest day of my life have been plenty. This line of work and passion isn’t so easy. But, the saddest day would have been the day I felt incredibly low and useless when I was rejected by one of those Big talent competitions. It really messed me up but it made me want to do what I love doing more. Music.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.

I would spend a million dollars by firstly traveling around the world and catering to the homeless and the needy by providing them with daily essentials and giving them the much needed love and time. I would use the rest to further my career in music and save up for my future generations to come.
