Hit Dogs

Tell us your real names, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.

Neal Ward: Lead Vocal and Guitar. John Lindsey: Bass. Allen Millsapps: Drums and Backing Vocals. We are located in Asheville, NC, USA. Childhood experience: Imagine the TV show Stranger Things but without the Upside Down, Gorgons, etc. It was kind of like that.

Tell us about your music career, your band name, musical background, experience and skills.

We have all played music since childhood. We all grew up listening to the radio, going to see bands, buying records, loving and playing music. Neal and John are in another established band. Hit Dogs is a side project.

.

.

.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

Our genre is alternative rock and indie rock. The concept grew out of late night jams. We call it Space Rock. It spans a wide range of textures and is fairly eclectic. No track sounds much like the other when you listen to the debut album, Hit Dogs. The one similarity is we like to provide “kick ins” that take the energy of the song to a higher level for the listener. We also structured the track listing (flow) so that it presents an album experience.

.

.

.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

Neal is the most experienced. He plays all instruments, sings and writes. He has recorded albums solo under another band name in his studio and he toured when he was younger. John has played bass in garage bands going back to college. Allen has played drums for years and recently started singing backup vocals. We all contribute to the writing and it’s an organic process. We all have day jobs that pay the bills. So, rehearsals, writing and recording all happen after hours. Thankfully music is a nighttime affair. So, it works.

.

.

.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

The debut album Hit Dogs, released on Oct. 31, 2017, was recorded at Neal’s Asheville studio. Neal mixed and mastered the album as well with feedback from Allen and John. In today’s world of digital music distribution – a new band can release an album and get exposure without a record contract. It’s mostly about quality of the work and how much you are willing to hustle.

.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

It’s more about survival of the soul. The music inspires us. When you write a cool riff or think of a great lyric and then start to work it out – that is like a drug. There is extra life there and it continues to give back to you the more you do it.

.

.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

We just make songs our way. The consideration of a song becoming a hit is not part of the process. This is a very much an indie aka Independent rock band in that way. If people like it – then great and we very much appreciate it! But, it’s not going to change the way we do things or the way we write or record songs.

.

.

.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.

Start your own band or do your own art. If we inspire you, great to hear it.

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

Keep at it and you will continue to improve. Make practice part of your daily routine and seek out like minded people to collaborate with on music projects. If music is not ultimately your best fit — then try something else creative.

.

.

.

List Radio or TV Stations that are airing your songs and blogs that have featured you as well and send message to them via this platform.

Broadtube Music Channel is the first. The debut album was released 1 week ago and we are a new band. We are on Spotify and Apple Music.

.

.

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

Our music is composed live in a rehearsal-jam type setting. A member may bring a particular set of beats or riffs to work on. Then, we build around that to make the song. Words are generally written afterward. It can take 3-4 sessions to get a working composition and then we tweak it from there.

.

.

.

Name five biggest artists that you like.

It’s all over the place: Queens of the Stone Age, Pixies, Husker Du, Silversun Pickups and Khruangbin.

.

.

.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.

So far, we have been insular. It’s the 3 of us doing the writing, recording and performing. Hoping to expand that approach this coming year. We’ve talked about developing an acoustic show with a Cello player friend. It would be really interesting and textural compared to electric versions we are playing now.

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

The day someone you love is lost forever, that is the saddest day of all days. The day you meet someone you love for the first time or again after a longtime apart, that is the happiest day of all days.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.

Doing exactly what we are doing now: making music and sharing it with people. There would definitely be nicer gear. Plus, more support on the business and promotions side.
