Tell us about your music career, your band name, musical background, experience and skills.

San Francisco-born Beta State weave effortlessly in and out of musical genres, mixing a cocktail of ambient future indie rock, dream-pop, electronica, and hip-hop beats layered underneath melodic alternative-r&b inspired vocals.  Currently living in Los Angeles, the trio got off to a quick start, scoring a chance to write and record a song with Linkin Park that would end up on Linkin Park’s LPUXIII album.  Singer Matty McDonald, bassist / producer Justin Kastner, and drummer / producer Adrian Robison used this experience to set the tone for their future as songwriters, trading in loud rehearsal studios for songwriting sessions with laptops, samples, and keyboards.  They released their EP “Timeless” in 2016, showcasing lush, epic choruses with smooth pop vocals over synths, ambient guitar and samples.  Their sound continued to stray further away from rock with their late 2016 release of “Forever”, infusing hip hop beats and alternative-r&b vocals over a dark and twisted lyrical motif that screams to be placed in the soundtrack of a suspenseful movie.  Their evolution hit full steam in 2017 with the release of their singles “Make It Up To You”, “LMK”, and their latest anthem “Westside”, trading in guitars for samples, keys, and synths while keeping the flavors that fans of Beta State have come to expect intact.

Band Name Origin:  A friend of ours got stoned and said that he reached his “Beta State” when he saw a tree grow out of the ground (a sort of dream state).  In reality he meant to say “Theta State” which is a state of consciousness that is in-between sleeping and awake (daydreaming).  After looking up what “Beta State” actually meant (a brain wave state of mind when you are awake and conscious) we decided to roll with that name.  To us, it means to be in the moment, to be alive.

Experience and Skills (pre-Beta State):

Matty – Sang in local bands around Fresno

Justin – Played bass in various bands in the Bay Area, ranging from metal to rock.

Adrian – Played drums in a few local rock bands before joining Downside which eventually became Strata.  He would eventually sign to Windup Records and release two albums before the band broke up.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

Our genre is primarily alternative but like our bio says from above, we “weave effortlessly in and out of musical genres, mixing a cocktail of ambient future indie rock, dream-pop, electronica, and hip-hop beats layered underneath melodic alternative-r&b inspired vocals”.

We don’t have a music video yet, just an audio only video.  We are working on a concept for one right now.

The song is about moving forward at all costs.  When the universe is holding you back and telling you to quit, that inner voice inside takes over and gives you the strength to move on.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

We are the type of band that has been very fortunate.  We have recorded a song with Linkin Park, opened for Green Day, played some amazing festivals, been featured on MTV, MTV2, and FUSE…  We have built a strong following in our hometown, but for every door open there has been an equal amount of doors closed in our face.  We like to turn those into learning experiences and they help the band grow to learn how to be persistent through adversity.  We have learned to own up to our faults and work harder to succeed the next time around.  The only people that are going to stop our growth as a band is us.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

Justin and Adrian are the musical producers in the band, crafting the beats and melodies that make up each song, while Matty and Adrian craft the lyrics.  When a song is complete, each member gets their chance to nitpick and change what they don’t like.  The process has worked well for us in that it truly is a collaborative effort.  Often Justin will start a beat and ask what we think about it.  Adrian and Matty will hunker down in the studio and try to flesh out a working demo, then present it to Justin.  We rinse and repeat this process over and over, often writing the same song multiple times to find the version we are all the most happy with.  On this latest song “Weight Off My Shoulders”, Justin had created a beat that sounded like an A$AP Rocky song.  Adrian was driving on HWY 5 back and forth from Los Angeles to San Jose and came up with the chorus lyric and melody.  Matty and Adrian fleshed out some workable lyrics and completed the song, but the final version was just lacking.  We shelved the song for the time being and came back to it periodically.  We ended up writing around 30+ versions of the song until we came up with the version you hear today.  To top it all off, Adrian mixed the song, then was unhappy, and remixed the song two more times until it was right.  Lastly, the song was mastered 3 times.  In the end we are proud of this song because we had the grit to see it through until it was right.  At any time we could have settled, but we decided to push ourselves to make the best version of the song that we possibly could.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

The version of Beta State you hear today started in 2016.  We used to be a full on rock band before that, but we had a lineup change as well as a sonic change, trading in guitars for more of a produced, sample driven sound.  Currently we are all focused on this project as well as giving our talents to other projects as well.  Matty also sings for Highsociety which hit #2 on Beatport, Justin plays bass for The Holdup which is a national act as well as produces rapper Tru Heru.  Adrian has been involved in film, lending his skills to other artists that want music videos.  The future goal of Beta State is to start trending on some streaming playlists and create a national demand for touring.  Currently their strongest markets are in California, but with some of the right playlist exposure, we feel we can take this show national.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

We are inspired to write music based on our desire to fill the void in what we like to listen to.  Currently there is no real band or artist that sounds like Beta State, and we gravitate towards making that kind of music because it feels fresh to us.  We use our wide range of influences to create something unique and that’s what makes it fun for us.

The band can agree on these artists as influential to our sound:

The Neighbourhood, Lana Del Rey, Coldplay, Radiohead, Post Malone, A$AP Rocky, Bjork, THEY., Linkin Park, Phantogram, The Weeknd, Twenty One Pilots, Mutemath and Imagine Dragons.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

We will tell you when we write a hit song LOL!

But we CAN tell you the secret to writing a Beta State song:  Demo, break the demo apart, demo again, break the demo apart, change the tempo, change the key, demo again, lyric session, lyric session again, record a final version, re-do the final version again (FINAL FINAL)…   Basically in our band we RARELY ever stick with the first version of any song we write.  We always finish our demos and think to ourselves, “What can make this song even better?”…  Then we go out and write the song again with that in mind.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.

The biggest message we can pass on to our fans is a big old THANK YOU.  Naturally we like to make music for ourselves.  One could call us selfish in that way.  But when we put the music out for the world to hear it no longer belongs to us.  The fans own a piece of that music now.  We just want to say thank you to all of them who have grown with us and who continue to share our music to their friends.  Hearing how a song we wrote in our studio can impact a fan in their life magnifies the impact that the music has on us as creators.  It’s no longer about us at that point and it really acts as kind of a social bridge.  We are all just one big community of music lovers listening and sharing the love of each others musical art.  It’s a really beautiful thing and we feel fortunate that there are people out there that have decided to take this journey with us.

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

Make music because you love it, not because you want to get something out of it.  We as artists have always put the love and care into each track first.  The marketing and / or selling of the track is always an afterthought to the actual creation of the song.  If you stay true to these principles, you will always be successful because then your success is measured by your own merits as opposed to what the world thinks of your music.  Stay hungry and always think of ways to improve.  Your next song should always be better than your last.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

We won runner up in the John Lennon songwriting contest and we also won the chance for one of our music videos to be featured on FUSE for an entire month straight.  Adrian has a gold record from his previous band Strata for appearing on Marvel’s The Punisher soundtrack.

List Radio or TV Stations that are airing your songs and blogs that have featured you as well and send message to them via this platform.

Live 105 has been our biggest supporter from DAY ONE.  They are the local radio station for the entire Bay Area and probably one of the biggest alternative radio stations in the country.  Aaron Axelsen has personally been a huge supporter of everything we do and has featured us regularly on his Soundcheck radio show every Sunday night.  We owe him a huge thanks for everything he has done for us in the past.

FUSE, MTV, and MTV2 have all played and / or featured Beta State at some point and we have them to thank as well for their support of independent music.

Most recently we got reviewed by HuffPost Music where they said, “Beta State is re-defining the sounds of modern alternative rock.”

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

As far as recording goes, Adrian and Justin both own super high end gear that they use to record all the songs.  We have everything we need to record and mix music on our own without having to go to a big studio.  We made those investments early on so that we could create music without compromise.  Recently (as of this month), Matty has upped his gear collection so that all three of us are completely functional recording artists that don’t need to book outside help to finish a song.

Name five biggest artists that you like.

The Neighbourhood, Linkin Park, Lana Del Rey, Coldplay and Bjork.

.

.

.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.

Linkin Park has been one of the only artists we have collaborated with.  Of course we would absolutely love to collaborate with them again.  We have also had remixes by Highsociety and INDO.  We would love to actually try and write an original song with them at some point as opposed to a remix.  It could be a lot of fun!

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

I think as a band our happiest day is tied between opening for Green Day at Oracle Arena and recording a song with Linkin Park.  Both were amazing experiences.  Our saddest day?  Honestly, we don’t really have any “sad” days, but we have had some hard times.  The hardest hit has been Matty, who at one point was homeless to try and make the band work when he moved from Fresno to the Bay Area.  He kept it a secret, but he slept in his car so that he could be close to the band as opposed to 3 hours away.  Eventually he found his footing, but during that time it was a hidden struggle that even his band had no knowledge of.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.

The first thing we would do is set aside half for taxes (we are responsible).  The second thing we would do is establish a living situation and studio situation that is an upgrade from what we have currently.  The third thing we would do is probably buy some analog outboard gear.  The fourth thing we would do is invest in any assets the band needs such as tour vehicles and production (lights, etc).  The fifth thing we would do is try to buy onto a tour.  And then lastly I feel like we would use the rest of the money to live off of so that we could be creative 24/7.
