The Cool Quest

Tell us your real names, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.

Names: Vincent Bergsma (vocals), Ilse de Vries (bass), Sander Moorlag (keys), Vadim Neef (guitar), Thies Bouwhuis (drums). We were all born in the Netherlands between 1989 and 1994.

I (Vincent) grew up with three sisters and a brother in a town called Bolsward in the north of the Netherlands. I was by far the youngest of the bunch, my sisters and brother are at least ten years older than me, so I was the spoiled lil’ brat growin’ up with four moms. They inspired me a lot when it comes to music. I can remember them watching Yo MTV Raps in the early nineties. So i grew up with hip hop groups like A Tribe Called Quest, Fugees, Wu Tang, Cypress Hill etc.

Tell us about your music career, your band name, musical background, experience and skills.

I’m a rapper/singer/vocalist of my band The Cool Quest. We met each other more or less by accident at a jam session in 2010 and got along so well, we decided to start working together on a regular basis. We released our debut album ‘Funkin’ Badass’ in 2014 with our single ‘Shine’. In 2016 EP ‘Pulsar’ and two singles ‘Heatwaves’ and ‘Coastline’ were released. We’ve done over 500 (festival) shows in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Luxembourg and Belgium.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your song.

Our current sound can be described best as somewhere between classic hip hop and modern pop music with a dash of light-foot funk.

About this single: we wrote Runnin’ together with producers Snoet & Smoel, Paul Maaswinkel and Martijn Groeneveld. They’re from the Netherlands as well and Jerboa Mastering, he is from Brussels.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

We started our band in 2011, we did 500 shows, released 2 EP’s and we’re working on our second album. Near future goals: go for the big festivals in Holland like Lowlands or Pinkpop and do more festivals abroad. Long term: Takin’ ova! Level 9000.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

Most of the time it starts with a beat or some chords. I just start by scrambling some words or melodies phonetically, then we work it out as a demo and finalize it with a producer.
