Tell us your real names, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.

My real name is: Joelina Drews

Birthday: 27th of September 1995

I grew up in a musical family and as my dad has already been a singer, I started very early with singing and playing the piano. When I was 13 my dad got asked to be part of a tribute song for Michael Jackson and I begged him to sing on it as well. Finally he recorded a part with me which turned out to be my first vocal recording ever. End of this story is that the producer of this song got aware of me and wanted to work with me. Since then I kept working on my own music and started writing for other artists as well.

.

Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.

I started searching for a producer in the US when I was 14 years old and went to Los Angeles to record my first songs. As a result, I returned to Germany with a bunch of songs in my bag and released my very first single “Trendsetter” in 2011 which was placed in the top 20 of the American Club & Dance-Charts. There followed TV-productions such as “Goodbye Deutschland! Die Auswanderer”, guest appearances at “The Dome” and “Verstehen Sie Spaß”. As candidate of the RTL-Danceshow “Stepping Out” I even accomplished it till the finals. After this first little success, I kept traveling back and forth between Los Angeles, Sweden, UK and Germany and created my own urban pop sound that’s full of interesting contrasts: it’s edgy but vulnerable, approachable but cool. It combines rap-elements with classical pop and unites soulful vocals with urban beats.

.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

I would describe my sound as urban dance music as it’s a mixture of urban pop / R&B with future bass and dance elements. “Skybar” channels fragility, a raspy sexiness and edgy power. It’s an ideal blend of pop, R&B, and future bass. I wrote this song in the beginning of this year when I stayed in LA for some months. I went to the Skybar at Mondrian at the Sunset strip nearly every weekend and had an amazing time with amazing people. One time, when I went into my session the next day, I wanted to write about this good time I just had there, about living in the moment and totally devoting yourself to somebody that you really like, not thinking about tomorrow! And I think we are totally catching the vibe when you’re meeting a new crush, wanting to get closer to them and being unable to focus on anything else.

.

.

.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

As you may have noticed, I’m an independent artist, not signed to any label / publisher or management and I organized everything about my release on my own. That can be very tough, especially when you want to get heard by a bigger audience. Naturally you don’t have access to big playlists or social media websites when you’re not a major artist and I experienced that as well. But it makes you even happier and prouder when you get even a baby step closer to your goals and someone (like this blog for example) shares your music. As I’m a perfectionist and I always wanna get better and better in what I do. I want to write better lyrics, bring up better melodies and sing better every time that I’m walking into a studio. When I’m working on my songs, I can be myself. I can express my feelings and talk about my experiences and life issues.  And I feel I’m in a stage of my life now, where I really have something to say and I can pass something on to other people out there. So all in all, it’s hard finding people to believe in you and listen to you and your music when you’re an independent artist. But if you really want this and you’re willing to work hard and improve day by day then it’s totally worth it. For me making music is not about the money or the fame but about doing and working on what I love and sharing this with people out there. And this is the greatest gift for me!

.

.

.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

I’m mainly working with one producer, Wassily Gradovsky who I met in the beginning of this year and we vibed at the very first second we met! He’s crazy talented and already produced songs for Exo, Girls Generation and Juicy J. We recorded this song during our LA trip in summer and shot the music video in October in Berlin with a Canadian crew.

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

I started to sing when I was 6 and recorded my first vocals when I was 13. At 14 I released a “pilot single” and at 16 a second one with which I was able to make my first experiences on stage and TV. Since then I kept working on my style and sound, as well as on writing songs for other artists. The music business isn’t easy to get and live in but I can never imagine doing something else because music is my passion and I love what I’m doing. My future goal would be to reach a bigger audience, to tour with my upcoming album (expected in summer 2018) and to always get better and better in what I do.

.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

Everything that I or people around me experience and feel. I’m a very sensitive person and feel everything very deep so I think this is kind of my engine to write songs. To every emotion and feeling I personally want to listen to a song that fits to my current situation and what is better than writing about what you’re going through and on top giving people out there something they can identify with?

.

.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

There are different definitions about what is a hit song but I would say that a hit song includes a hooky and catchy melody that is easy to remind, an outstanding but simple lyric that people can identify with and last but not the least a great artist who can embody the vibe of the song.

.

.

.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.

That everybody has issues and nobody has a perfect life. You have to work with what’s been given to you and in the end there’s always something positive behind every story. Just live in the moment and enjoy the path.

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

Don’t wait and do, work hard and be patient!

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

I just released my debut single “Skybar”. More music is coming out soon! My album is in progress 😉

Thanks so much for your support and sharing my song! This really means the world to me and I’m excited sharing some more music with you guys soon!

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

Just out of the situation, my mood and feelings. It’s always different. Sometimes I start with the melodies, sometimes with the production and sometimes with my lyrics. In the end all comes together. But the best sessions are always those where everything comes out really quick because you feel it and it just comes out of you. Music is totally about emotions and vibes.

Name five biggest artists that you like.

Ariana Grande

Christina Aguilera

Bruno Mars

John Legend

Sam Smith

.

.

.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.

I had no really big collaboration yet but I’d really love to work with John Legend or Sam Smith for example! As a songwriter I’d also love to work with Poo Bear, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter. These songwriters are beasts in what they do and I really admire them and their music!

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.

I would spend some on my music and probably donate some for people in poor living conditions.
