Tell us your real names, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.
Andrew and Victoria Knopp, born in New Zealand in the 80’s. Vic remembers wanting to play clarinet at school and being given a cello because it “Started with the letter C too”.

Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.
We met at the music school in our city where we both majored in Jazz Performance. We played in lots of other bands and projects but didn’t really get to express our own musical ideas till we started The Response. It was originally a bedroom project but after we released our first album in 2012 we realized we’d have to figure out how to play this music live. We’ve refined our stage show over the years and our sound has followed suit.

.

.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.
We would describe our genre as indie/alternative. The song ‘Off Grid’ started – like most of our songs – as a simple guitar riff idea that expanded into what you hear now. Lyrically it deals with false hope. Everyone says “Follow your dreams” but in reality, it’s not as straight forward as people make out. We think it’s a theme most people can relate to and it’s certainly something we’ve struggled with in the music business.

.

.

.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.
Music has taken us all over the place. We’ve gotten to play festivals and shows with some of our favorite musicians here in New Zealand and abroad. We remember one time where we had a pretty hilarious ‘complication’ with an album release. We just finished our release gig and as we were driving home we started getting messages from people who bought the album asking about a certain track. It turns out the album manufacturers had accidentally replaced one of our songs with a 15 minute sitar instrumental.

.

.

.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.
The Response is just the two of us in really every sense. We write, produce and record in our home studio.

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.
The Response has been putting out music since 2012 and we will likely keep doing it till we die.

.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.
We find writing music to be a bit of self therapy. It allows us to explore ideas and feelings that would otherwise get us down. Getting the music out is what keeps us sane.

.

.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.
Well….if you know, do tell us.

.

.

.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.
Music only exists if it’s listened to so keep listening!

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

Keep writing all the time. Don’t be afraid to throw away songs that you don’t think are awesome.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.
We’ve released three full length albums and our latest ‘What are you waiting for?’ is our fourth EP. We’ve gotten to share the stage with such acts as Baio (of Vampire Weekend), Deep Sea Diver (Seattle), Big Scary (Australia) and Kate Boy ( Sweden). We’ve done a few national tours here in New Zealand and played shows in Canada and the USA.

.

.

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.
Often when writing songs we will have some sort of melody that starts to develop. Then we’ll sing along in gibberish and certain words start to pop out. Then we just start to follow those words down their paths till sentences form. They kind of write themselves in a way. When it comes to recording vocals hot water and honey is great for soothing your voice.

Name five biggest artists that you like.

The list of artists we love is huge but if we had to narrow it down to 5 we will go with:

Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, The National, The Killers, Vampire and Weekend.

.

.

.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.

We’ve got a collaborative EP with a great instrumental band called ‘American French Fries’. If we had the change it’d be so cool to work with Chris Taylor from Grizzly Bear. His production is always amazing.
