Tell us your real names, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.

Hey, I’m Cat Thomson, born in Calgary, Canada back in the late 80s! My childhood was filled with love, laughter, music, kids in the hall and Mr. Bean.

Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.

I started taking piano lessons at age 5 and since I wouldn’t stop singing at the dinner table…was quickly put into choir around the same age as well. I started writing music around 9 and when I was 18 I was offered a full-ride scholarship to Louisiana State University for Opera. I studied classical voice for 7 years and had the awesome fortune of singing over in Europe a couple times. I moved to Vancouver, Canada in my 20s, paused my opera career and pursued my own. I was signed to 604 Records in 2012 and last year I left to pursue music as a fully independent artist.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

It’s a mix between adult contemporary /easy listening/light pop. I wanted this video to be very simple: just me and my piano. The simplicity of the song is mirrored in the video…nothing else needs to be present…just the words and music.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

I’ve studied music for a really long time…almost 25 years. After studying classical music, I went on to take a diploma in audio engineering and production and loved it. I wanted to know everything about being in front of the mic and behind it. I’ve worked with some absolutely incredible people; the ones who collaborate, and listen and genuinely want the best for you (the “ups). I’ve also unfortunately worked with some pretty brutal people as well. The “business” is a constant learning curve.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

I co-produced this song with my longtime collaborator and friend, Jeff Zipp. We recorded it at the legendary Armoury Studios (Norah Jones, KISS, Drake) in Vancouver with Spencer Bleasdale engineering. The video was directed by Matt Popp and filmed by Cal Wood and Nic Tagg. We wanted the shots to be light, airy and simple. It only took one hour to film.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

I’ve been a part of the music scene for the past 10-15 years in both a classical and pop setting. I have learned so much from both industries! My future goal is to continue writing and to write for other artists. I love performing but only do small intimate shows (it’s easier for me to connect with the audience).

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

My biggest inspiration is life and mostly the heartbreak that can come along with it. I write what I feel. It’s easier for me to express my feelings in a song, rather than in a conversation.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

Trust in the process. Oh, and phenomenal music and lyrics helps 🙂

.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.

Thank you for all your support, it truly means the world to me!

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

Know your worth, and believe in yourself. It’s easy to get swept up in listening to how someone else thinks your music should sound. COLLABORATE. I can’t express enough how important it is to work with other musicians and artists. You will learn so much from them and yourself. Be humble.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

I released my first EP, “Puzzle” in 2014 and it was named “EP of the year” by the Canadian Music Blog! That was pretty cool 🙂

List Radio or TV Stations that are airing your songs and blogs that have featured you as well and send message to them via this platform.

I had huge early radio support from Montreal (shout out to the Beat 94.5), so a big thank you to them. Also to Canadian Beats, Canadian Music Blog, Ride The Tempo, ASAP Music Blog and Alfitude. A big thank you as well to you guys, thank you for featuring my newest release!

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

It usually starts with me sitting at my piano. My chords are the first to come, and the lyrics come after. In the studio, I like a quiet/dark space. My songs are typically moody in nature, so I need to set the tone. I’ll always record piano first, then vocals. I only like to do 2-3 vocals takes since I find the more takes I do, the less I connect with the song. The emotion needs to come through, and if I’m trying to make something sound perfect, it falls flat.
