HARIZ

Tell us your real name, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.
My name is Justin Hariz, I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California on March 27th, 1997. I️ was brought up in a loving family! I️ have a twin brother and a younger sister, we’re all very close and very supportive of each other and I️ couldn’t ask for a better family.

.

.

.

Tell us about your music career, your artist name, musical background, experience and skills.
I chose HARIZ because it’s authentic and unique, and that’s exactly who I am. Using my last name as my artist name says that.

Since I️ was a kid, music had always been a big part of my life. Both of my parents always loved listening to music, so there was always music playing in the house or in the car, from many different genres. I really think that’s how I got a lot of my influences. At the age of 4, my parents put me in piano lessons, and I️ played and sang in many recitals. In middle and high school, I also performed my original songs at school talent shows.
When I was 16, I started playing at different venues and open-mic nights. I even performed at beauty pageants and special events. I always wanted to put my time in and build my chops as a performer, so my sincerity can come through.

.

.

.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind the song.
I’m a Pop/ R&B artist, but I️ draw musical influences from many different genres.
“Does It Hurt” is about how love can hurt, in both a good and difficult way. I see the song coming from two different perspectives. One is when you love someone, yet the other person doesn’t know your true feelings and it hurts that they don’t. The other is that you love someone so much that you feel pain because of how deep your emotions are. I’ve been in both situations. I’m excited to see how others will relate and connect to it!

.

.

.

Tell us about how the song was recorded.
The day the song was written, I️ went into the studio with the idea that true love can be painful- in both a good and difficult way. So the producer, Jarvis Anderson and I️ both centered ourselves around that concept, crafting each lyric and melody to represent it. We used soft synths, vibrant drums and dynamic vocals to represent the dichotomy between the sweetness and hurt of love. I️ related to the story so much, that the words and melodies popped out at me.

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.
I’ve been in the music industry professionally for a couple of years and my experience has been great so far!
I’ve met wonderful people and I’ve been to awesome places! I️t’s exciting to see so many people enjoying my music.
My goal is to perform and share my music with the world. I️ want to inspire people and say the things that they feel, but can’t or don’t dare to say in public.

.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.
My own experiences and thoughts, as well as others, are my inspiration to write and compose. I want to be the voice that expresses the pains and happiness of life in a unique style. I write each song as an experience people can relate to, because I would want each of my listeners to feel they are connected as one in humanity.

.

.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.
I️ would say the secret is patience! You can’t force a song to be written, it has to flow out of you, and the pieces will fit just right.

.

.

.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.
To my fans- I would love to say thank you to everyone who’s coming along with me on this journey. I appreciate all of you very much, and I’m excited to grow and share more with you!

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.
Be patient and keep working hard. Good things don’t come overnight, so keep pushing on.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.
New music is coming out soon!
I️ was awarded the “Harold Adamson Lyric Award” in Pop music by ASCAP for year 2016.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.
My process is a constant flow. I get ideas throughout the day, both consciously and subconsciously, from
things that happen to me or to other people, or from things I see and feel. I write those experiences and
feelings down on a list in my phone. When I’m in the studio, I take an idea, and start writing lyrics that describe the experience and then play around with chords until I feel they match the vibe. Sometimes I do the opposite; I start by creating the music around the idea first and as I’m doing that, the lyrics jump out at me. I trust my gut and my heart a lot to guide me in the creation, and to let me know when I’ve got it crafted and finished just right.

Name five biggest artists that you like.
I️ like The Weeknd, Charlie Puth, Astrid S, Selena Gomez and Jarryd James.

.

.

.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.
I collaborated with Lauv and R.LUM.R, to name a couple. Would be awesome to create with Sia, Selena Gomez, Rihanna or Post Malone. I think our styles would mesh together really well.

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.
My happiest day would be the day I️ got my first piano! I️ could not keep my hands off the keys! I️ would play it every day before school, and when I got back, until I had to go to sleep!
My saddest day would be when my mom passed away. It was a really difficult time for me and my family and I’m thankful that we’re close because we helped each other through it.

.

.

.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.
I️ would buy as much equipment as I️ could for my studio! There’s always new things that I have my eyes on!
