Nat Reed

Tell us your real names, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.

My given name is Natalie Reed Burke Laster and I was born in Denver Colorado in 1996. My mom kept her maiden name, so when I was deciding on an artist name I wanted to honor both parents so I went with a name they both gave me, my middle name, hence Nat Reed.

Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.

Growing up music was always one of my extracurricular activities, but it was just a hobby until high school when I decided that I needed to dedicate all of my time to it to really compete. I started on violin when I was 8 and hated it, then I tried the cello which I played for about 9 years. At the same time I joined a children’s choir which was way more my cup of tea and continued on with private lessons after school.

I didn’t start songwriting until high school and my love for pop music led me to start experimenting with DAW software like Logic X Pro.I was accepted into Berklee College of Music in fall 2014 and majored in songwriting and production. While at Berklee I released my first EP entitled ‘REED’, as well as a music video for the song ‘Gold’. ‘Selfish’ is my latest single release and will be followed by many more in 2018.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music.

Pop and R&B are my biggest influences and have been blending recently on the charts and in my own sound.  I write about the human experience, complex emotions that are hard to express on your own.

.

.

.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

I consider myself a writer first. I love being an artist and being able to perform my own songs but writing is my biggest passion. Being able to communicate complex emotions through music is what makes the struggle worth it. The hardest thing about the music industry so far, is finding talented and passionate collaborators. Finding someone you click with musically that wants to work with you is next to impossible, even at a huge music school surprisingly. Because of that I have chosen to learn as many skills myself as possible, so that I can still be an artist so in a way this problem has served me well.

.

.

.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded.

‘Selfish’ was written, produced, and recorded by me in my bedroom. I have worked with other producers in the past but never exclusively so it seemed more efficient to attempt to learn the craft myself and it’s something I really enjoy doing. My manager is my partner in crime and my secret weapon. She helps so much with the work load of being an independent artist and really keeps everything on track while I’m busy being a student.

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goals.

So far I think I’ve had one foot in the industry and one foot in the safety of college so I can’t speak so much for the industry experience. But so far I’ve learned that you have to prove your worth before you will get any help, but you will be way better for it. My goals are to learn, to improve and to collaborate. Just develop more as an artist.

.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

Art is about self-expression and I think the wonderful thing about music is that it can be an outlet for you and your listeners. I want my listeners to be able to relate and process, music has done that for me more times than I can count.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

I’ll let you know when I find out!

.

.

.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.

Thank you!! And also, what makes you weird is what makes you cool, embrace it!

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

Music is a craft just like anything else. For some reason we live in a society where everything artistic is just talent, so either you have it or you don’t. That’s just not true, music is something you can learn and improve on just like everything else. So take the criticism and work hard, if you want instant success you’re in the wrong industry!

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

I’m really new at this ‘Selfish’ is just my second project so the hustle continues. I have many more releases schedule in 2018 though so if you like what you hear, definitely stay tuned!

List Radio or TV Stations that are airing your songs and blogs that have featured you as well and send message to them via this platform.

Sound of Boston premiered my first music video and still supports me to this day. Howl and Echoes, Eternity Network, The Fresh Committee, Critical Network, The Dutch Guy, Future House Cloud and now Broad Tube 1. All I have to say is thank you thank you thank you so much! Your support is invaluable to me and I just appreciate it so much!

.

.

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

I love poetry and lyrics mean so much to me, they can make or break a song in my eyes. So, I always start with the lyrics first. Then I start the production with however I think the song feels.

.

.

.

Name five biggest artists that you like.

Banks is a big one her lyrics are insanely deep and dark I love it. Sabrina Claudio is a big one too there is not one song she’s released that I don’t like. Tinashe, Jhené Aiko and recently Kiana Ledé. I have so many inspirations though it’s really hard to just pick five.

.

.

.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.

I’m releasing a song in March that was collaboration with Hunter Lamar and Denzel Hollis, a project I am very excited about! I’m also currently recording a song I worked on with the amazing Miette Hope.

Producers I would love to work with just to name a few are Stint, Cashmere Cat, and Cheat Codes. Cross your fingers for me.

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

My happiest day so far was when I was accepted to study at Berklee. It has shaped my music career in ways I could never have imagined and given me so many opportunities to grow!

.

.

.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.

That is a really hard question! I’m a minimalist so I think I would just make a little home studio for myself, help out my family and then use the rest to create a company that would help connect great musicians with music therapy initiatives or sexual assault victims.
