Tell us your real names, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.

A: My name is Alysia Simmons, I was born in the United States and I grew up in the Bay Area.

M: My name is Mariami, I was born in Georgia (Europe, not state) and I grew up in New York.

Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.

A: I started getting serious about music around 2 years ago, but I’ve been writing songs forever. I never had any professional training, but I started singing at about 10 years old and I stuck with it.

M: I’ve been making music since I was a little girl. My grandfather was a Music Director and piano player. I got bit by the music bug young and never stopped creating.

.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

A: For $ilk, Mariami had a vision of 2 powerful goddesses and she did a beautiful job of painting that picture. I love the imagery and flow of the song.

M: I was visiting Malibu when I started working with Alysia and at the time I was staying in this gorgeous villa tucked in the canyons. I had a vision of 2 goddesses singing and mirroring one another and shortly after and everything just came together.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

A: As a musician my goal is to empower the listener. Music has always been something I turn to for support to work through my own obstacles, I enjoy doing that for others.

The ups are when someone reaches out to me and tells me that they connected with something I wrote, that’s by far the most valuable piece of this whole experience. The downs are that at the end of the day this is a business, and you meet a lot of people who don’t have your best interest at heart. It can be a shallow and lonely place, but if you stick with it you’ll eventually find like-minded people who are in it for the same reasons you are. These are the people who challenge you and make you a better artist.

M: I try not to focus on downs and if they happen I ride them till they become ups. As an artist my goal is to believe in my vision so steadfastly that I pursue my projects w/ out a trace of doubt. Typically when I know deep down something is dope, I’ll fight to preserve that knowing and move w/ grace towards its completion even though people question my decisions along the journey.

.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

A: Mariami and I live in different states so we recorded our vocals separately. She recorded hers in NY and I recorded mine in the Bay with Rob and Nic of The Canvas Group.

M: Music video would be great. I have a dope concept, 2K18 could be the year for us. 🙂

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

A: I’ve been involved in the music industry for about 2 years. As of now I’m just working on putting as much of my music out there as possible. In the future I’d like to continue to do more collaboration. It’s really amazing how much you can learn from another artist, even being on the other side of the country.

M: Future Goal = Make dope music 4 ever, be happy AF 4 ever, give graciously and abundantly to the ones I love and live by my values

.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

A: I try to write about everything and anything, inspiration is something I like to practice. Regardless of whether or not I’m doing it for a living I don’t think I could stop. It’s how I work out my emotions and it’s a huge part of my identity. I’ve always been a bit of an introvert so writing helps me feel connected.

M: Nature has been a great inspiration. Mountains, hiking, being physically challenged. Moving energy forward physically goes hand in hand w/ creating.

.

.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

A: Does it get stuck in your head? That’s the running joke with my friends. If I play them a song and they’re humming it the next day…it’s a hit! Ha-ha. But it all seriousness, I think it’s just about opening up and writing your truth. People notice that.

M: Simplicity + Authenticity.

.

.

.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.

A: Thank you for all the support, I love you!

M: Co-sign Alysia! All love.

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

A: I myself can be considered upcoming, but what I would say to someone thinking about going down this path is that there’s no one way. Do what feels right for you.

M: Follow your gut + heart.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

A: As of now I have 4 tracks out, you can hear them all on my Soundcloud.

M: Writing non-stop since I turned 19. Great people and amazing things have happened along the way. 🙂

.

.

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

A: This is a hard one to answer because no song is the same. Some songs take minutes to write, some songs take years. I think the main thing I try to keep consistent is writing everyday.  As far as recording goes, I’ve been going to The Canvas Group to record my vocals for a while now. They’re great and they really understand my voice.

M: Life happens for 24 hours a day and writing happens 24 hours a day. The two go hand in hand and feed one another.

.

.

.

Name five biggest artists that you like.

A: Off the top of my head…Little Dragon, Rihanna, SZA, System of a Down and Tame Impala.

B: All of Alysia’s + Frank Ocean.

.

.

.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.

A: My DREAM collaboration would have to be Tame Impala, I love their sound.

M: Frank, Kanye, Pharrell.

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

A: My happiest day was a few years back; I performed at a small show at Regina’s Door in Oakland. It was small but people heard us and started to gather around the side walk and it just felt right. I had taken a break from music for a while and that day really reminded me it was what I was supposed to be doing. When I start to feel overwhelmed I try to think back on how simple but powerful that night was.

I can’t tell you exactly what my saddest day is but I’m sure it wasn’t too long before that show. I had really given up on myself and music, not having hope can be devastating.

M: Happiest day = the day I found strength in me I didn’t know I had. These realizations happen w/ subtlety and ripple widely.

.

.

.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.

A: Definitely travelling the world. Nothing inspires writing like new experiences!

M: Ditto Alysia — Travel + treating loved ones to the best of life, sharing wealth and creating more good in the world.
