Tell us your real names, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.

My name is Kristy, but I prefer to go by my artist name, Letters From Pluto! I’m a Pop Artist from Canada. I’ve always been a lover of space! 🙂

.

.

.

Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.

My name, Letters From Pluto, comes from a deep love of space. I wanted to be an astronaut as a child and I’ve always had a fascination for the unknown. As an artist, I released my first album last year and released my first single, “Cold Right Now” this year to radio across Canada, Europe, and the UK. I’ve always been involved in music. I’ve been playing the piano since I was about 5 years old and throughout school I was involved in various orchestral bands. Once I finished high school, I went to University and received a degree in Music, majoring in voice and music theory!

.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

My sound is the mash of a few genres, so I’d call it indie pop/electronic/rock! My single, “Cold Right Now”, is about someone coming into your life, turning it upside down, then leaving as quickly as they came.

I wanted the music video to have an action/adventure/sci-fi feel. With the different aesthetics, I wanted the viewer to have an other worldly vibe, which I feel like we achieved. My main intention of the video was to introduce the all-in-black, helmeted character. What is it? What does it want?

.

.

.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

As an indie artist these days, I feel like the waters can be tricky to navigate, especially in genres where there are artists such as Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, who are mammoth’s in the industry. There can be many tough days, but then I get on stage and perform again and remember how much I love doing what I do, so I keep pushing. But being an indie artist also has many advantages! You’re in charge of your career and get to make decisions how you see fit.

.

.

.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

Many people don’t realize, but I’m an artist, not a band! But when I perform live, I always have a band with me. They’re amazingly talented people, and their skills always blow me away!

My single, “Cold Right Now” was produced by John Nathaniel and Remixed by Howard Redekopp.

As for the video, it was shot in the forest over a two day period. A lot of hiking was involved and I’m sure there are many hours of film that we didn’t even use for this video! The director of the music video is Brandon Fletcher of Faked Potatoes, based in Vancouver, Canada.

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

As a singer/songwriter, I’ve been writing now for about 7 years, but as Letters From Pluto, it’s been about a year and a half! This past year and a half I’ve learned a tremendous amount about the music industry and I’ve grown not only as a singer/songwriter and artist, but I’ve grown as a person as well. Always learning!

One of my future goals is for my music to be everywhere and to be able to tour the world and connect with lovely people from all around the world!

.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

I find that inspiration can come from anywhere. Almost always through personal experiences, stories I’ve heard, even just a simple conversation with friends. Sometimes friends will say something and I’ll just stop, think about it for a second and say to myself, ‘that needs to be a song’. Or sometimes the music will come first before any lyrics at all! It’s different every time. As for singing, it’s just such a natural, incredible feeling. It’s the most freeing feeling in the world.

.

.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

If you figure it out, let me know! Haha. In truth though, there’s really no formula, you just have to try to always write your best song. Try to outdo yourself every time and always push to write something better. And always, always be truthful.

.

.

.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.

You are amazing, you are lovely and you are never truly alone. Don’t waste your time with people that steal your light. And never be afraid to shine.

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

The industry you’re entering is tough. It’s unforgiving and it’s hurtful. If you really, truly want to be an artist more than anything, then don’t give up. Motivation, determination and true grit will be what helps you to succeed in the end. And if you really want it, never stop and never let anyone take your light away. Also, make sure to arm yourself with as much knowledge about the industry as possible. Research everything you can! When I decided to pursue my passion of music, I was as far removed from the music industry I could possibly get, I didn’t know anyone I could even ask about the industry. I didn’t even have a friend of a friend of a friend, but I made it my duty to learn as much as I could. Study up and know what you’re getting into!

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

Since I started Letters From Pluto, I’ve luckily had some exciting things happen in a fairly quick amount of time. I released my album April 8th, 2016, I then won a local radio contest called the HOT Factor for the radio station, HOT 107.  Then this year I won iHeartRadio Future Star, which is a Canadian National radio campaign to help Canadian artists get exposure through radio airplay. My single was also just nominated for Best Pop Song for the Hollywood Music in Media Awards! Totally unexpected! I got to go to Hollywood for the first time ever, walk a red carpet and attend a fancy Hollywood event! I still can’t believe I was nominated and had the opportunity to go!

.

.

List Radio or TV Stations that are airing your songs and blogs that have featured you as well and send message to them via this platform.

It would be difficult to send you all the radio stations that have spun my songs this year haha, it’s been quite a few now and I don’t have access to that full list. Sorry! My song has been played by over 100 stations across Canada, Europe and The UK, which is so incredibly exciting!

Some blogs that have interviewed me are: Female First UK (they premiered my music video as well!), Canadian Beats and Killing Moon Records!

.

.

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

It’s almost impossible for me to explain my lyric writing process. I’ll see what the music is making me feel, have a scenario playing in my head like a movie and then try to put into words what I’m feeling! As for singing, each track is different depending on the emotion I’m trying to convey.

.

.

.

Name five biggest artists that you like.

MUSE

M83

Coldplay

David Bowie

Garbage

.

.

.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.

I haven’t really collaborated with other artists in the past, but if I got a chance to collaborate in the future, I would love to work with M83, Coldplay and Garbage. Shirley Manson from Garbage was one of my idols growing up, and a huge influence on me personally and musically. If I ever got to meet her, I’d probably scream and then cry. Haha. Also, if I ever got the opportunity to perform with MUSE (one of my favourite bands of all time), I would probably pass out.

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

Happiest Day — I’m almost always at my happiest when I’m performing, it gives me such a rush. I had a very unique show held in a Planetarium in my city and it was the most exciting show of my career so far. I think it’ll be hard to top that one! Haha.

Saddest Day — When my beloved cat, Chance, passed away. I still think about her every day.

.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.

Buy an island? Buy a rocket to launch me to Pluto? I don’t think a million dollars would cover the cost of space travel haha.

I would definitely travel as much as I could and have as many incredible experiences as possible. Maybe even buy a ticket for a zero gravity flight? I love to have new experiences, so that would be a goal of mine.

I would love to take my entire family on a really nice long vacation. Travel the globe, visit new places, meet incredible people, eat delicious food and just get to spend time with them. Everyone is so busy all the time, it would be nice to spend some uninterrupted time together. 🙂
