I grew up extremely poor in a rough area. I had quite a turbulent childhood, a few areas of trouble but overall it was OK.

Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.

Artist name: Greta Reign (Greta being my name and reign as I liked the spelling of the word and hopefully can reign my own little segment of the industry one day).

I studied music in school and can play various instruments. I have always kept music as a hobby with songwriting over the years. Earlier this year (2017) I finally decided to ‘take the plunge’ and see if I could actually do music full time. In the short time I’ve been pursuing this I’ve already managed to secure 3 publishing placements and have started to grow a stead fan base. I’ve been using a lot of live streaming to help connect with more people which seems to be helping me get new fans quite a lot.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

I kind of feel that the track could fall into 3 (maybe even more) genres but mainly I would say it’s a cross of pop, ambient and trap. The concept is quite descriptive within the song itself. I’ve lost a number of people in my life through suicide and it was something I felt like I wanted to talk about and hopefully be able to get a connection with people listening to the song who may have had similar experiences.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

One of my main goals on this new journey into music is to write songs that can help and inspire others. I love a catchy pop song as much as everyone else, however it’s those tracks where the artist is going into real detail about emotional experiences that I connect with most, and so that’s my aim with my music. I’m quite new to the business and so as of yet I can’t say I’ve experienced many/if any downs but the ups have been seeing people react to my music, listening to fans cover my music via livestream and having songs placed with a publishing company. I guess I’ve achieved quite a lot given how new I am but I think that’s a testament to my hard work, drive and being eager to learn.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

The video is not yet completed, a lyric video is being designed by a animator. The beat was purchased online from a producer affiliated with The Internet Money Group which is a collection of industry standard producers who sell their beats online and also directly to established artists.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

Around 7-8 months. It was during March’s time when I decided to really try and pursue my dream. Prior to this music was always a hobby and passion of mine I just never had the confidence to try and release anything. Which looking back now is crazy to me because of how well this is going. My ultimate goal would be to inspire others and say if I can ‘do it’ then so can you. I want to help people feel confident and feel worthy because there’s not enough of that in the world. I would love to build my own studio in my home town and have those facilities here for others to use, because it’s such a small town nothing like that really exists there and so one day that’s something I would love to do.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

I find it beneficial and almost therapeutic to express how I feel with songwriting. I probably have over 10 albums worth of songs and subjects in my head that I want to talk about. I’ve been through so much and so have a lot of material in my mind just waiting to be expressed in a song.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

I don’t necessarily think there is any secret. There are certain formulas, chord progressions etc that can be used but for me the songs I’ve written that I love the most are the ones where I’ve just sat with my pen and wrote from the heart. More commercial songs tend to not have quite as much emotion in them and I guess for those types of tracks I focus more on creating catchy lyrics and hooks but if I want to write about a particular experience or emotion then I don’t really need to follow the pop structure on those ones.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.

To wake up and live your best life. So many people get stuck in the routine and 9-5 job, which 9 months ago was me. I took a huge step in quitting to do music full time and I truly want to inspire others to realise their full potential.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

Don’t expect opportunities to come to you and I would strongly advise against sending a bunch of demos out, it doesn’t work. Instead put that time and energy into building your own brand and business and making it as visible as possible. If it’s good enough, or if you’re creating enough buzz by yourself that’s when the industry people will start reaching out to you. That’s what happened with me anyway. I was approached about writing for a sync brief by the music supervisor directly. Also don’t rush to release music if it isn’t ready, I made that mistake with my first few tracks. I had them available everywhere and eventually got them pulled from Spotify, Apple etc because I realised the more I was learning that while the concept of the songs was good, they really weren’t up to par with the music out there.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

I’m hoping to do an international tour sometime in the next 1-2 years. I have fans across the globe from here in the UK to USA even Japan and China as well as other places so one day I would like to tour everywhere, but for now I’m focused on growing my brand further.

List Radio or TV Stations that are airing your songs and blogs that have featured you as well and send message to them via this platform.

I had PR support on my first release and it was subsequently placed in 3 Spotify playlists, and Apple playlist and featured on The Daily Grind, This Is 50, BET and some other publications. I’ve had radio airplay for a whole load of online stations and some podcasts, haven’t yet targeted commercial radio.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

I write all the time. My notes section on my phone is full of so many ideas. I might be watching something, or walking past something when I get a sudden idea and I keep a note of them all so I can refer back to them when needed. Sometimes I write the complete song first, other times I write the song to the music, it varies. I record both in the studio and at home with my little set up. That’s something else I would strongly recommend to new artists, invest in a studio quality mic and vocal booth so you can have access to it at home. I often get inspired at really weird times so being able to record at home with good equipment is vital as well as recording in the studio.

Name five biggest artists that you like.

I’m such a huge music Stan! Naming 5 will be tough because l literally like so many different artists across multiple genres. I would say Skrillex is definitely in my top 5 because of how unique and talented he is, and actually so is Diplo. I love Bebe Rexa, Eminem, Kanye, Stefflon Don, Stormzy, Major Lazer, Cardi B, Migos, Jay Z, Paramore, Tupac, Biggie, Linkin Park, I could literally go on and on because I’m a fan of so many artists.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.

My dream collaborations would be Skrillex, Diplo and Salaam Remi. All 3 have been super influential in various genres and they are all musical geniuses in their own right.

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

My happiest time in my life is right now. I can’t express how good it feels to finally be doing something I love and something I’m hugely passionate about. I would encourage anyone who may not feel confident enough to pursue their dream to wake up and literally live their best life.

I’ve had numerous sad days, I’ve dealt with everything from being so broke I couldn’t afford to eat proper food so hard to get by on literally toast and tap water to suffering from a variety of life threatening illnesses such as sepsis and meningitis to losing people close to me and actually have been close to giving up myself. I don’t really like to be someone who presents themselves as a ‘poor me’ or ‘look what I’ve been through’ attitude instead I think it’s more important to use those negatives and somehow turn them into a positive, which is what I’m doing now by pursuing my dream and talking about difficult things in my music. I think the more people find out about me, the more relatable I will be because there’s going to be so many people who have experienced the same situations as me, and I want to help them see they can get through it.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.

I’m a massive gamer, and so I would invest in the e-sports industry for sure as that’s only going to continue to grow and so I feel like that would be a smart investment. I would then build my own studio, house, help my family out, get some nice bits and bobs and then create a structured food bank system available to anyone. I’ve been so broke where I needed to use food banks and you have to pretty much beg and prove to the state you need the vouchers to get the food, which was enough to put me off even going as it’s an embarrassment so I went without. My foodbank would be available to anyone, and I would like to think I could stock it with really nice food and toiletries etc, not just basic value tinned food.
