Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.

Grant, Kyle and Kris actually grew up together in the small town of Holland, Michigan. They have been good friends since birth. Dustin grew up in Colorado. All of us started playing music at a young age and have continued to work on our craft ever since.

Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.

After playing music together for many years under a different name, MIDNIGHT PILOT was formed in 2014 in Nashville, TN. We loved the way “Midnight Pilot” sounded as well as the branding we could do with that (bomber jackets, planes, etc). We all play a little of most instruments, but each of us have our own strengths. Kyle plays mostly lead guitar, Grant plays guitar and sings, Dustin plays keys, and Kris plays bass. Grant does most of the songwriting whereas Kyle and Dustin do most of the producing. Overall though, we love working on music together.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

We claim to be an indie rock band. We feel that most accurately describes our sound. We feature a lot of guitars and chord changes as well as some catchy melodies. Our most recent EP “Stepping Stone” is on the darker/ heavier/viby-er side for Midnight Pilot. Whereas other EP’s may have showcased our ability to write a mid tempo or ballad, we cranked up the guitars a notch on “Harder to Find,” “Stepping Stone” and “Not My Style.”

.

.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

We feel like songwriting and production is our greatest strength. The music business can be a tough business to be in. For every success/“win” that we get, it comes with 10 losses/failures. You just have to learn to keep pushing, take constructive criticism when it is given and keep getting better.

.

.

.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

“Harder to Find” was recorded in Nashville, TN by Logan Matheny and Kyle Schonewill. Kyle and Grant did most of the producing, with Dustin and Kris also chiming in occasionally with ideas. Will Chapman, who normally plays in the Indie band “Colony House” was our guest drummer for the entire project. He did an amazing job. We tracked drums and bass first after Grant and Kyle had recorded some scratch tracks. We then filled in all the guitars, keys and vocals before having Dustin add a few last minute touches of some weird sounds. Kyle did all the mixing and mastering at his studio, The Treehouse.

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

We have been playing music for a long time, but Midnight Pilot has really been in the industry since 2014. As I mentioned before, it has been filled with ups and downs. The goal would be to eventually be able to have MIDNIGHT PILOT be our full time gig.

.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

Making music is just SO FUN. Making it with your friends is even better. That is what is so inspiring. You get to start with NOTHING and by working together; turn that nothing into a tangible product, a song. Getting your feelings and emotions to come out into the music is such a cool experience. And music has the power of communicating and connecting with people like nothing else. Hearing other artists that we love make the music that they love also inspires us on a day to day basis.

.

.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

Haha, if we knew, we would tell ya! In all seriousness, I think it’s just writing music that really means something to YOU as the writer. Whenever we try to force a sound, lyric, or song, it never turns out as good. Our best songs are the ones that just come naturally to us.

.

.

.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.

If you guys keep listening, we will keep making music! We are so thankful for every one of our listeners. It means so much to us that somewhere, someone we don’t know is listening to the music and the songs that we write in our houses mean something to those listeners. Love you guys.

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

Keep pushing, keep going. No matter what anyone says to you, if it’s in your heart, keep digging. No matter the level of success you are able to achieve, music can still be such a special thing.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

Our discography currently includes – “Let Go” – EP in 2014. “MIDNIGHT PILOT” a full length album in 2015. “The Good Life” EP in 2016. Then, “Hold On” and “Stepping Stone” both released in 2017. Our greatest success in the music industry has been in the film/TV sync world. We had a song played on The NFL Network. One of our older songs was featured in the trailer for the movie “Sleepwalk With Me.” We have also had songs featured on The Food Network, HGTV, and the Katie Couric show. Music licensing is an area we hope to continue to grow.

List Radio or TV Stations that are airing your songs and blogs that have featured you as well and send message to them via this platform.

See above for TV. We have had a multitude of blogs and Indie/ College radio stations around the country. A few online radio stations as well.

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

Our writing process usually starts with Grant just hearing a melody in his head. He then tries to put chords to that melody. At that point, he will take the song to Kyle. Kyle and Grant will make some adjustments and start tweaking the song. Maybe we change the melody slightly, or the structure, or a bridge. After all of that is set, we will put some lyrics together and see how they fit with the track. We won’t fully know how it all works together until we start recording everything for it. Sometimes, we get to tracking the vocals after everything else is done, and we notice there is a melody we don’t like as much anymore and it has to be changed. We try to avoid that, but sometimes you can’t.
