Stella Smyth

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Stella Smyth, and I’m a 16 year old singer, producer and songwriter. When I was growing up, I loved singing, especially with my sister. I learned how to play the piano at about 9 and I’ve been writing songs since before I can remember!

.

Tell us about yourself as an artist.

As an artist, I feel like I’m still trying to find my sound. I’ve been writing in a lot of different styles but it doesn’t feel natural unless it comes from a place where I can’t really verbalize my emotions unless it’s in lyrics. At this point, I’m just putting out songs that I hope people can connect with on some level.

.

.

.

Tell us about the genre of your music.

My music would fall under Alternative, or Indie-pop/electronic. These genres are definitely accurate representations of the music I listen to, like Halsey, Porter Robinson, and Tove Lo. One of the main reasons I put out songs is because I want others to feel connected to the music I make like these artists did for me.

.

.

.

Tell us about the story behind your song.

‘My Mind Is All Yours’ is not a happy song. It’s about realizing the impact that someone has had with you after you’ve been with them – in this case, I felt like I needed to question everything about myself, and I felt like the world didn’t make sense but every flaw of mine did.

.

.

.

Tell us the challenges you are facing as a musician.

Being 16, it’s been pretty difficult balancing school and music, especially finding time to do sessions! I find myself spending much more time on music than homework, but I’ve finally been able to find a happy medium.

.

.

.

Tell us about the recording and production of the song.

I wrote this song on the piano before I decided I was going to produce it, and then recorded it in my bedroom at 2am. I produced a lot of it in my room, and thankfully, had some help on the production side of things.

.

.

.

Tell us the names of blogs, radio or TV stations that have supported you so far.

100FM (line out with Dor Dekel), a radio station based in Tel Aviv, has always been willing to play my songs on his station! In addition, Kush Music (Soundcloud) has often reposted my songs as well!

.

.

.

Tell us more about your music career, experience and future goal.

Currently, I’m trying to build a body of work, and I’ve been working with some incredibly talented producers and songwriters to help me with that. My goal isn’t to blow up or be famous, but I want to impact at least one person the way that my favorite artists have impacted me.

.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

What inspires me the most to write are my own experiences. All of the songs I’ve put out have come from a very raw, vulnerable place and I think that’s something you can hear in my music. Scenery also really inspires me. I love landscape photos and sometimes I have a photo pulled up on my phone while I write so I can almost see rather than hear what I’m trying to create.

.

.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

I would say that to make a hit song, the lyrics (and production) needs to be meaningful to you, and that’s something that needs to be heard in the song.

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

Don’t worry about what other people think of your music! It’s completely irrelevant – make the music you want to make and eventually the sound will catch on.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

Currently, I’m trying to build a body of work, and so far, people have liked what I’m putting out!

.

.

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

I usually write my songs on the piano – it may be hard to believe, but every single song I’ve put on Soundcloud was originally written acoustically. I usually write the song first, then produce it as I hear it in my head.

.

.

.

Name five biggest artists that you like.

I love Halsey, Astrid S, Blackbear, Porter Robinson, and Tove Lo.

.

.

.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.

I’ve just begun collaborating with other artists, so you will find out soon! In the future (if I was given the opportunity), it would be amazing to collaborate with anyone on my playlists, ranging from Bon Iver to What So Not!

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

My happiest day was probably when I finished my first song. Although it wasn’t nearly as good as I wanted it to be, I was still proud that I produced a song by myself. My saddest day, on the other hand, was probably when my sister left for college. I hadn’t known how attached I was until I had to say goodbye!

.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars

I would donate the majority to an organization I volunteer for, and use the rest to travel to places I’ve always wanted to go to, like Japan, Nepal and Sweden!
