Mamizu

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Mamizu. I am a music producer in LA originally from Tokyo. Since I came here, I went to a college to study music for a year and a half. While I was a student, I started working for a composer by arranging music. And gradually I started my gigs for films too. I have worked on numerous pieces of music for a lot of films.

Tell us about yourself as an artist.

Since I started my career as a film composer/ arranger, I did broad range of music from classical to rock.

But in this year, my health condition was not good. I mean it still continues but I went to see some doctors but didn’t know what was going on. So I was in a difficult condition physically and mentally. And I was thinking about quitting music actually. And at the same time, I was asking myself if I quit music, what do I want to do before that? That’s why I started writing my own song.

Tell us about the genre of your music.

Basically my music is electronic. Since I like designing sounds with synth and stuff.

.

.

.

Tell us about the story behind your song.

The story is about a couple who are trying to find slight hope in their desperate life.
I made sketches of like 10 songs before this song and couldn’t find satisfaction. But one day, when I started playing some chords with pad, I was like oh this sounds good. Something was different and then I kept on writing.

Also lyrics, it almost came down to me after struggling for a week. It was a kind of wearied experience for me like it came down.
And also I luckily got the artwork from Perry Dixon Maple. He is really a great artist. I want to mention it too.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

Well…I’m not sure. But obviously there is quality of sound which attracts a lot of people. And I believe it’s not impossible to get the quality. But it’s more like our attitude and for me more important thing is what I really want to do.

I’m still an upcoming artist too. So keep on working.

.

.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

Nothing so far. I composed/ arranged music for films and they did well in some competition or commercially succeeded but not for my music so far.

.

.

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

Start from looking for sounds and then usually play chords or making beats.

.

.

.

Name five biggest artists that you like.

It’s really hard to pick but let’s say Radiohead, Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Ivan Lins. They are like my all-time favorite even though I don’t often listen to them anymore. But I really love artists like Moglii, Flume, Maggie Rogers etc. There are too many.

.

.

.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.

I’ve never collaborated. And it’s really hard to pick too. I can say a lot. But since I want to push up the Japanese music scene with other Japanese musicians, for example, AmPm. I really like their music. They have great taste. Hope I can collaborate with them someday.

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

Happiest day probably when my daughter was born last year? I can’t tell about a saddest day in public now, sorry.

.

.

.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.

Build my own studio. There are so many instruments I want. And I want to go to Japan a little bit more often. But realistically I want to move a little bit bigger place for my family. And I’ll save the rest for the rainy day.
