Ryan Dunlap

Tell us about yourself.
I’m 31 years old from Perrysburg Ohio. I started playing at 17 after buying a guitar to try and turn my poles into songs. I’m self-taught and after a few years I began to play local bars and coffee shops. As that began to grow so did I. Traveling and opportunity led me to Seminole Florida where I live now in the winter months.

Tell us about yourself as an artist.
I love all kinds of music and I think that shows in my music. I’m a writer before anything else. I’m amazed the way words can mean so much and so many different things to people all at once. I try and relate whatever I’m talking about to a situation everyone can relate to.

.

.

.

Tell us about the genre of your music.
I’m just a songwriter, genres have always crossed over in my stuff. Sometimes you’d swear I’m all in county singer, others are full of jazz and blues vibes.

.

.

.

Tell us about the story behind your song.
This is just a tune about that little part of you that wonders “hmm is this the one?” Whether that’s in the first five minutes of meeting or five months maybe five years. Then the feeling of it all falling down and waiting for that ride back up again!

.

.

.

Tell us the challenges you are facing as a musician.
I’m legally blind, that’s the biggest issue. Because of this I can’t drive which makes touring or even getting to local gigs tough at times.

.

.

.

Tell us about the recording and production of the song.
This song was recorded at Firefly Studios in Toledo Ohio. We wanted to combine some slick production with a live feel as much as possible. So I brought in my band The Tires and a few other friends and I think we accomplished our goal completely!

Tell us the names of blogs, radio or TV stations that have supported you so far.
Newspapers
Toledo blade: Toledo City Paper, Perrysburg Messenger, Bowling Green Sentinel

Radio: 92.5 kissFM, 100.7 The Zone. 97x Tampa, KRXM.com

Tell us more about your music career, experience and future goal.
Music has done more for me than anything else in life. It’s taught me to work hard, it’s taught patience, it’s helped me to learn how to take rejection. In the future I just want to keep playing!

.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.
Simply life!!!

.

.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.
Hahaha I can’t say I know anything about having a hit song, but I’d say it’s connecting with people. Every hit song struck a chord with someone. Finding that chord seems to be the illusive challenge.

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.
Be ready to fail, but don’t be afraid to. It’s impossible to make everyone happy with something as subjective as music, so you’re going to “fail” so many times with songs, gig opportunities, ECT. Knowing this and continuing to just push forward is huge.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.
I’ve been fortunate to have steady work playing covers over the years in places that encourage me to play my originals and sell my music. If toured a bit over the years playing in places like Chicago, NYC, Pittsburgh, Tulsa, Austin. Supporting my last two albums.

.

.

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.
I typically get an idea in my head, sometimes a phrase sometimes and entire chorus; from there I pluck away until something clicks. That’s typically how it happens. Just a tiny snowball that starts rolling down hill and grows as it moves along.

Name five biggest artists that you like.
Dave Matthews Band
Ryan Adams
John Mayer
David Ramirez
Andrew Combs

.

.

.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.
Other than just some local artists I haven’t really work with anyone of recognition haha much like myself. But I’d love to have John Mayer lay down some guitar. And it’s a dream to have Ryan Adams produce an album of mine… Or just write a tune together.

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.
Happiest day was playing with my band at SXSW in 2016. It was an incredible weekend/gigs/and over all experience with great people.

Saddest was the day my father passed away.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.
Traveling, there is so much of this world to see and experience and only a tiny bit of time to do so.
