Ok well, where do we start, we grew up in California, in the shadow of the Silicon Valley, in very seedy sketchy communities and music kept us out of trouble and eventually became engrained in the fabric of our souls and we can’t imagine a world where we shake that. We wanted to write music that inspired us and was as deep as californication and Joshua tree for example.

Our press release in this case was just a bunch of singles that altogether will comprise our first album. We’ve had a demo floating around out there for a while but the release of singles was mainly inspired by the times and in the style of hip hop mix tapes which don’t put too much of an emphasis on holding music back.

Well I believe we owe a lot to Angie, Miranda, Khristina and Rebecca without whom the band would’ve never formed. We also owe a lot to our sherpas Esther and Kika and V for Vendetta also our managers who kept us going and kept us diligent and driven, Kun Thung in Palo Alto and later Tommy Koenig in Emmeryville.

Narrate your experience while recording in the studio or while touring. 

Our experience is obsessive compulsive; it is free form madness with an edge of meticulous detail. Recording is an art unto itself that lends itself to feeling limitless like the ocean, it can feel daunting and scary at first but once you just focus on your place in it, you just learn to stand on your sound and ride a wave out. In that we find joy and insurmountable joy at that. Touring is freedom, it is bringing life to our bones and hopefully if it’s done right we light up the people as much as they light us up. Touring is fun, we love people and playing for them and bringing ourselves to the depths that we need to get the song to its point of conception, the point of its initial intent, but also letting it be very present and living in the moment, were jazz men at heart, so we leave room for bars and solos and jokes.

Go into detail about your songwriting process.

You know it’s like catching a tiger by the tail sometimes it starts with a melody and then the music comes. Sometimes it starts with the music and the words are drawn out by the music. Sometimes it’s collaborative, sometimes it’s an extremely introverted and lonely and isolated process. We try to let the songs lead us into the space it always belonged. All in all we sort of always try to stay really good listeners, not just sonically but to each other’s critique, I know that if I can make a fan of myself I’m on to something.

 Brief us on what you have on the way for your fans out there. 

We have a full pledged guarantee to put our hearts and soul on the tracks and just leave it there forever and go wherever we are supposed to go. I can’t guarantee that I can make everyone happy with it but I promise that I will make music I want to play and have to sing whole heartedly.

If you have any suggestions we’re open to them. We’re doing we’ve thought to, everything from gigging, to maintaining a dialogue on multiple social media platforms, to sending our music out to really awesome very generous bloggers.

Tell us that point in time that you just feel like giving up on your music career.

Earlier today, yeah it comes and goes, sometimes I feel like I’m building a boat in a desert wasteland but when the songs in the pocket, and it’s not about anything vain, it’s just about spirit and life, the reminder comes and sets me straight. I’m like a bird man, sometimes it gets cold and you fly places you don’t have a nest but you sing, because that’s just your disposition. The business aspect of music and the tailoring it for critics is something that can be a drag but I don’t write for them, I write for many reasons but the most important is for me and the people I sing to, the people who vibe to it, who live to it.

I just sit like a prayer and let the sound God lead me to truth. It’s like meditation, it’s fascinating if I try to stay objective about it because it seems so nonsensical until the song is done.

Music licensing, well we want to maintain and own all publishing rights to our music like U2 if that’s what you mean and as the sole artist writing the music I think we have license to.

Tell us your favourite genre of music. 

There’s this dude Seymore Stein, music legend, discovered the Ramones, etc. He has this great quote I tell to every girl I’ve ever dated who asked me what kind of music I like, I said well there’s only two types of music good and bad, I like the good kind. By good I mean deep, I mean music you want to color you’re life with, music that reconnects us to our lost humanity, and music that encapsulates a time in your life and becomes a time machine every time the verse drops. But short answer I like soul.

Tell us the subject matter of most of your songs. 

Love is at the heart of every song as well as defiant joy. I believe in speaking life against a tide of suffering, I believe in also writing what I feel in the moment, my doubts, my successes, sometimes I just want to make myself laugh and have fun. I love how you can cover all of those bases and more so with some I’m sure I haven’t even thought of yet.

This song is about defiant love and joy in light of tragedy. It’s a song that calls for self-empowerment and ultimately healing.

Tell us what you think about digital distribution and streaming. 

I love it, I love any sort of technological advancement maybe it’s being from the sketchy part of the shadow of the Silicon Valley in me but I’m a sucker for embracing everything and anything that moves us forward and frankly I think the goal is to be in people’s lives as a gift if they’ll have us and the digital distribution and streaming makes that happen.

Tell us various ways that artists can boost their revenue. 

I would say touring more than anything, that’s where the real money is, aside from the percentage of sales of streams and videos and merch, etc. People love live shows and they pay for them, there’s no reason the artist and promoter can’t eat.

Tell us your thought on self-training and going to educational institution to study music. 

I believe there is value in both and there’s danger in lending too strong an emphasis in either of those directions. Look I’m a self-taught musician but I’ve also accepted the fact that there are a shit ton of people out there who know a lot more than I do about music. So I try to stay in a constant state of learning. I love theory, I love learning as much as I can as often as I can and the bottom line is that even in the best educational institutions that are teaching music of the student isn’t applying him or herself in training and discipline and so forth, then they won’t amount to much as a musician in my opinion. They’ll probably pass the class and go get a job in cubicle somewhere and hopefully find their peace but that drive to train, study and carry out music is invaluable and not many people have it and maintain and produce with it.

It takes many things, hooks which are melodies that appeal to some primal part of our beings. It takes time and chance; it takes real risk, talent, an eye for what’s hidden in plain sight most of the time, innovation even. You have to have a gift of drawing people one way or another, but then again what do I know about that?

Some really rad artwork, maybe pictures of the south of France, Robert Frank, a Diego Rivera or a Frida, Jimi at Monterey Pop, synthesizer mics, the gold plated Shure Beta 58, Fender Jazz Bass, Fender Mustang Bass, a drum set Neil Pert would be proud of and some fancy wine bottle holders.

To quote arguably the greatest movie of all time, “you gotta find the guy in the room not getting off and make him get off” (Almost Famous) I would say confidence, honest and attitude are important but also being yourself, like all of us are really goofy playful funny dudes, there’s no need for us to go on stage and act like douches who take themselves way too seriously.

I feel grateful to feel and be that alive. I feel honored and humbled that we are in such a position, it feels great to be heard but I’ll never forget what it felt not to, when all I was trying to do was hear my voice through all the noise.

I don’t really wait around for a mood, my mood to write a song is being conscious and having a pulse, a little red wine, a little love found or lost and a tuned up instrument at arm’s length couldn’t hurt though.
