Joe Jenneman

Tell us your real names, country of birth and childhood experience.

My name is Joe Jenneman.  I was born and raised in West Michigan.   I’ve been performing since the age of nine, and writing songs since I could talk.  As a child, I would fall asleep to the sounds of blues legends Son House, Skip James, and Robert Johnson.

.

.

.

Tell us your academic qualification.

From 2015-2016; I attended Columbia College in Chicago where I studied Urban, Contemporary, and Popular Music.  I learned an immense amount during this span about who I am as an artist, as well as a human being.

.

.

.

Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.

My name is Joe Jenneman, on and off the stage.  During my time at Columbia, I recorded my debut EP, “Stonebridge,” which featured bass work from Joe Ayoub (Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, Colbie Callait, etc.).  In the spring of 2017, I recorded my “American Guilt” EP which is a more bluesy-folk flavor than my latest material.  My newest single, “Your Name” is out now on  Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube Music, iTunes, and Apple Music!

.

.

.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

I like to describe myself as indie-pop rock with an edge.  For this project I teamed up with Grammy Nominated Producer, Erik Kertes.  Working with Erik was a dream come true.  We effortlessly bounced ideas off of each other, and ended up with what I think is a very balanced, yet unique track.  Erik added just the right amount of “pop sparkle” to my raw, classic rock influenced style.

.

.

Tell us how to run a record label independently and successfully based on your experience as an artist.

If I ran a label, I would search high and low for artists capable of changing the game.  I would ignore “the numbers,” and find this generation’s Nirvana.  Something so fresh, and bold that the industry would never be the same.  Each artist on my label would hold those qualities.

.

.

.

Tell us how you are promoting your music.

I have been promoting my new single by spreading the word in every possible way.  I have posted the link to Spotify and other outlets on various social media formats including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.  I have also been reaching out to local radio stations, and well respected blogs such as Broadtube.

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you happy and what makes you sad.

I find joy when people are passionate, and productive about positive things.  It brings me down to see the hurt in the world, and all of the obstacles keeping people from realizing their dreams.

.

.

.

Explain clearly the story or concept behind the song.

This song, along with everything else I write is nothing but truth.  I was faced with a tough choice; stay in Michigan with my girlfriend, or head out to California to make my dreams reality.  This song tells the story of our relationship, and the decision at hand.

List the radio stations, TV stations and blogs that have aired or featured your new song.

I have been featured on EARMILK, Sunday Selects (playlist by Spotify), WYCE and WLAV.

.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

As I mentioned earlier, “Your Name” was produced by Erik Kertes.  Erik is an accomplished bassist (Shakira, Satellite, etc.) as well as writer and producer.  He currently has a song out with Michael Buble, which is up for a Grammy this year.

I do have a music video in the works.  This video is being shot and directed by Brendan Eadicicco (Eadicicco Productions).  Brendan has a great eye, and an exceptionally creative mind.

A real professional and a joy to work with.  The music video for “Your Name” will be out by the end of the month.

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

I’ve been making records and playing shows fronting various bands since the beginning of middle school.  Alongside each group, I would always continue to work on myself as a solo artist.  While I’ve made some of the best memories as a piece of a group, it became apparent a couple of years ago that I am best off as a solo artist.  At the end of the day, I know I can count on myself.  My goal for the future is to share my art with as many listeners as possible, and be able to experience all this world has to offer along the way.

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you unique from others.

What makes me unique is my ability to write melodic pieces with catchy hooks, without sacrificing the touch of rock and roll edge I’ve held on to since my earlier days as a punk rock frontman.

.

.

.

Tell us your weakness and strength pertaining music.

I have no weakness.  My number one strength is my lyrics.  I’ve always had a knack for telling a story through song, and that is something I hold a great amount of pride in.

.

.

.

List your five favourite songs including the artists.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Under The Bridge”

Tom Petty – “Marry Jane’s Last Dance”

Janis Joplin – “Me and Bobby McGee”

Bruce Springsteen – “Born to Run”

Kid Rock – “All Summer Long”

.

.

.

Tell us your position on “DIY” Do It Yourself” and signing to a major label.

I think the best thing an artist can do is “do it themselves” until they reach a point where their brand has been established, material has been produced, and there is a large fan base consistently growing.  Once these factors are in place, it may be beneficial to bring a label into the equation for a promotional boost.

.

.

.

Tell us the instruments put together in this song.

We put a lot of different sounds into this mix.  From the classic electric piano highlighted in the second verse, to the distant guitar solo during the breakdown, to the five part harmony sprinkled in at spots, this tune has enough variation to be listened to over and over.  Each time you listen, I promise you will pick up on a new part.

.

.

.

Tell us other activities you will like to pursue apart from music.

I like to stay active, I think it’s important to do so.  I skateboard, and play basketball as often as I can.

.

.

.

Tell us about gaining the confidence to sing in front of a large crowd for the first time.

To be completely honest, finding the courage to perform was never a struggle for me.  I’ve always been at home on stage, and have been addicted to the spotlight ever since I won first place in my hometown’s talent contest at age ten.

.

.

.

Tell us the best way to make money in the music business.

While streaming services such as Spotify are a great way to discover new music, there is less opportunity for musicians to make a profit now as there was prior to the digital age (CD sales, etc.).  This being said, all the money is in touring.

.

.

.

Tell us your experience pertaining TV/Radio plugging.

I’ve had the opportunity to have my music played on several radio stations, and I find it cool that a lot of them prefer a hard copy CD rather than sending over an MP3.  It’s like the last old school angle of the industry.

.

.

.

Narrate your recording experience.

Since Erik Kertes is capable of playing every instrument known to man, it was just the two of us on every step of the journey (up to mastering anyway).  I first played the song with just an acoustic guitar.  Once we picked a tempo and discussed arrangement, we just began layering.  My favorite part of the session was bouncing harmony ideas back and forth…I think the ones we ended up with sound pretty stellar.
