Go into detail on why you decided to choose music as a career.

I don’t feel like there’s ever been another career path I should follow. When I was 2 years old I got my first drum kit and haven’t looked back.  Growing up, music was always around the house; instruments were always laying around, trips to the record store were a frequent family outing, and movies like Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense and U2’s Rattle and Hum ended up replacing Saturday morning cartoons.

.

Brief us the feedback you are getting from fans concerning your music.

The feedback on this project so far has been great.  Fans are digging the music and seem to appreciate the visual element from videos we’re posting with each song.

Discuss the relevance of social networking to music.

Social networking is huge.  Social media is an integral part in what we do.  It still fascinates me that someone on the other side of the world can find your music.  Also, I find that peer to peer networking and getting to know people is just as rewarding.  There’s so many facets and so many approaches to making just one song, let alone the music industry as a whole, that it’s important to have people you can bounce ideas off of, from trading mixing techniques to marketing approaches.

.

.

Brief us about the recording of this song.

This song was recorded and mixed at our studio (Golden North Studios) and mastered at King Electric Studios in Austin, TX.

.

.

.

Tell us the story behind the song.

One of my favorite things to do is get on the highway and go for a drive with the radio turned up.  I was out doing that and realized that the radio and music has been such a constant in my life, through thick and thin, this was just my way of being nostalgic and saying thanks.

.

.

.

State your area of specialization in music.

I specialize in songwriting and performance, but have been doing so much recording lately that I spend more and more time on the production side of things-mixing, engineering and producing.  I’ve definitely developed a love for the whole process of making a song from start to finish.

.

.

.

Tell us how long it takes to finish a song from the start.

It could be anywhere from a day to a month, but the ones I end up liking the most seem to happen pretty organically and usually take about a week.

.

.

.

Go into detail on how you develop your lyrics and melody.

For this song I wanted the lyrics and melody to be familiar without being predictable.  In general, I build upon and develop the lyrics and melody alongside each other.  The way you can play one off the other to illustrate a point is a powerful thing.  A song usually starts with a melody, or line, or a feeling that gets stuck in my head and becomes an itch I have to scratch. From there it’s just working through it until I’m satisfied.

.

.

Discuss music generally in full details.

Music can mean such different things to different people and that’s why I love it.  It can bring back memories good and bad.  In fact, there are couples of songs I can’t listen to anymore because of the memories they conjure.  It’s a language, it’s the greatest communicator, and it’s lighthearted and heavy.  It’s what you want it to be.  What’s cool is that there are so many people making music these days and contributing to the global cache of songs that there is literally something for everybody.

.

.

.

State your five favourite genres of music with reasons.

50’s Motown- for the nostalgia.

60’s Rock- because that’s when they started breaking the rules of how songs are traditionally made.

70’s Funk and soul- you can’t beat it.  Those guys were so good at their instruments.

80’s Pop- for the futurism and full on dedication to evolving music – the next century.

And last, but certainly not least, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley and The Rat Pack- because they transcended music and became lifestyles.

.

.

.

Discuss your rehearsal.

Rehearsals are usually between 3-4 hours long and up to 4 days a week, depending on different factors.  What can I say?  It’s got to be tight and right.

.

.

.

State your favourite musical instruments.

I have a deep love for pretty much every instrument and can play ten fluently, but if I had to pick one it would have to be electric guitar.  You can do so much with it.

.

.

.

Describe the chemistry between you and your fans during a live performance.

When it’s done right, live performances are all about the chemistry you and the audience share.  No matter the size of the venue, performances should be a special moment in time between you and your fans.

.

.

.

Discuss your personality in full details.

I’m introspective 50% of the time and usually kind of reclusive, not so much out of agoraphobia, but because I get really absorbed in projects.  The other 50% of the time I have a childlike curiosity about how things work.

.

.

.

Tell us about your musical background.

When I was in 4th grade I got my first 4 track and have been recording ever since. I’ve played with bands since 9th grade. Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of hybrid recording to tape and digital.  Something about the way tape sounds is so satisfying. I do studio session work for other artists. I’ve been a booking agent for venues, but to be honest I prefer to just make music.

.

.

.

List your musical work.

This latest project might be a little ambitious, but I’m really excited about it.  We’re releasing one single a week for the next 52 weeks. Each song gets its own video.  Different artists are stopping by to collaborate on tracks and mix things up.  So far we’re just a few weeks into it and ‘Radio’ is the first release of this project.

State what takes your time apart from music.

I’ve been really into photography and videography lately. The two are tied so closely with music that it seems like it was only a matter of time before they collided.  I do a lot of carpentry and design projects.  Oh, and cooking.  I cook, a lot.

Share your memorable experiences with us.

There have been a couple sessions working on new singles lately that have been great. Those sessions where you’re working with a small, but tight crew and there’s so much momentum in the room are the best.

.

.

.

Tell us the good and bad side of mankind you know.

I’ve seen people be so generous and compassionate that they run themselves out of house and home. I’ve also seen people take advantage of that generosity and take everything they can from another person without a second thought.
