Sémmane

Tell us your real names, country of birth and childhood experience.

Sidsel Ben Semmane was born and raised in Denmark. My surname comes from my Algerian grandfather.

.

Tell us your academic qualification.

Master’s degree in Music.

Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.

Re-emerging from her commercially successful past, Sidsel Ben Sémmane is directing her art towards a more independent, personal approach.

She travelled the world, spending time living in Cuba, Singapore, Malaga and New York. She applied for the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus and studied there for seven years, whilst trying to find her true path.

She has emancipated from the commercial, male-dominated music industry as a strong young woman, who has become her own leader.

“Nobody’s Prey” is her debut single under her new artist name “Sémmane” from her to be released album “The Art of Being You.” With lyrics such as

“I don’t wanna be nobody’s prey, I don’t want your hands around my faith / Tell me why you’re standing in my way / I wish we could find our peace someday,”

.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

The genre is urban pop with elements of hip hop, flavored with electro pop and soul tinctures.

The music video symbolically delves into the notions of self, through explosions of colours and the use of the body as a canvas. It is internal and external judgments expressed through explosions of colors, ending up as a rebirth of Sémmane as she gets fully baptized in an orange mass and ends up peeling of her skin.

.

.

Tell us how you are promoting your music.

Using social media. Trying to reach out to blogs who could find it interesting for them. Creating great content. Playing live.

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you happy and what makes you sad.

It makes me happy when I can create music and videos that can touch or move people somehow. It makes me happy when I can make someone smile.

It makes me sad when people are not following their true calling and only following what everybody else is telling them to do.

It makes me sad when people don’t tell me the truth.

.

.

.

Explain clearly the story or concept behind the song.

“Nobody’s Prey” tells the story of conquering fear. “It’s about how fear is literally sitting beside me and how it can hold us back from being ourselves. It’s a conversation with my personified anxieties.”

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

The producer behind the track is David Evers. We recorded the track at his studio in Copenhagen. I’ve been writing and producing for the album “The Art of Being You”, with a selected team of producers and songwriters.

I, Sémmane, am the director behind the video and I developed the idea with the painter and artist Signe Noerregaard who resides in Italy. I gathered a crew of 6 very talented people and we shot the video in two days. It was the craziest video production I have ever been a part of. Working with so much paint and using my body as a canvas was a huge challenge!

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

I have been in the music industry since 2006 as I participated in Eurovision and released my first album when I was 17. I’ve been working within the industry since then and gained experience in how the different fields within the industry are running.

My future goal is to release album, “The Art of Being You”, as audio but also the video I’m producing, which expresses the tracks and the message visually. To be able to reach out to the right people who can get value from our content and make a change for them. To create music, art and live-concerts, that can touch and move the people around the world.

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you unique from others.

I believe we are all unique in the moment where we dare to be ourselves and not try to be or do what other people desire us to. So I strive to be the most honest version of myself. I strive to be 100% present when I perform and create music.

Tell us your position on “DIY” Do It Yourself” and signing to a major label.

Everything starts with a little seed. And the beauty of doing DIY is that you are really able to form that seed from within. Nobody is telling you how to sound, how to look or what to do. You can actually create your little baby and its uniqueness, in alignment with your inner call. Then when you got that clear, then it’s really important to get the right collaborations, in order to move the project and vision to a higher state. It’s tough to be alone all the time. So for me the key has been to find the right people to work with. This takes time and on the way there will also be times where you got to say goodbye to some people. But in the end it’s what’s best for all partners, even though it can feel uncomfortable in the moment.

Being a DIY, you need a lot of self-awareness and knowing your purpose and not being afraid of being a small fish. Major labels have some great muscles, but it has to be the right time and moment for such collaboration, as they got many artists and usually got their top-priorities and you can easily waste a lot of time waiting for anyone to attend to you. As a DIY you can make things happen very fast!

Tell us the instruments put together in this song.

Keys, bass and beat samples.

.

.

.

Tell us about gaining the confidence to sing in front of a large crowd for the first time.

Just believe in your purpose and that everything is going to be just as it has to be in that moment. Take a deep breath and just do it!

.

.

.

Tell us the best way to make money in the music business.

The main channels for income are live, sync, streaming and merchandise.

.

.

.

Tell us your experience pertaining TV/Radio plugging.

Earlier on my career path I’ve been going on radio tours, which is always a great way to connect with the listeners live.

.

.

.

Narrate your recording experience.

I released my first album in 2006, released on a major label in Denmark. Later I chose to break with the major label and to be on my own, in order to find my own artistic purpose and vision. Since then I went all DIY on it and I’ve been recording many different tracks which were never released. In 2013 I released and produced an EP with five tracks in a corporation with another producer under the name MLB. I’ve been recording my coming album, “The Art of Being You”, since 2015, cooperating with different songwriters and producers for the project Sémmane.
