Tell us your real names, country of birth and childhood experience.

Michael Starkweather born in Boston in the United States.

Tell us your academic qualification.

Currently in college full time, work full time, and music full time, while sleep is part time.

.

.

.

Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.

I go by Gyro Man, like a gyro sandwich. I started off with the piano and can still play and ended up with a drum machine and sampling. I’ve been doing music production for a long time and I’ve always followed the greats like Madlib, J Dilla, Alchemist, Flying Lotus etc. and I’ve always tried to put my own twist on the genre.

.

.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

Experimental hip hop instrumentals and occasionally I’ll have people rap over it but more often than not I prefer just making smooth beats. This song is more to showcase how the chords can say so much just by themselves with the drums just to keep it simple yet not simple whatsoever at the same time.

Tell us how to run a record label independently and successfully based on your experience as an artist.

Everything should rely on creativity and quality of the music. We’re musicians and if the music isn’t all the way there then what are you trying to sell. You have to constantly be making new music because when you sit on old music too long then:

  1. You don’t get better.

  1. It doesn’t look as good to keep giving the same song to everyone.

.

.

.

Tell us how you are promoting your music.

Consistently contacting every blog and label in my area as well as using submit hub constantly and replying as soon as possible.

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you happy and what makes you sad.

Music makes me happier than anything else that’s why I spend so much time doing it. I’ll get out of work at 11:30 pm and I won’t sleep till I’ve at least made one song. Nothing really makes me sad I don’t let things get to me that much.

.

.

.

Explain clearly the story or concept behind the song.

The idea is to make a song that can say so much with so little. Sometimes I like to just let the music speak for itself rather than fluff it up for no reason.

.

.

.

List the radio stations, TV stations and blogs that have aired or featured your new song.

Everyone that’s accepted me is still pending but there’s Biblioteka (label), Found.FYI, RKJ music, Plusquam records, and Sphere of Hip Hop.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

Pretty much just me except for a rapper named Lil Calico M950 who I’m about to release a record with as well as Nac a producer in my area that I’ve collaborated with in the past.

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

Since I was about 11 I started putting music online and I’m now 19. I also am doing this in order to become better than my idols otherwise why would I be trying so hard. Not planning on stopping till I get there.

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you unique from others.

A lot of people are too into the money and too into everything that’s not music related whereas I could care a lot less as long as I can afford to keep myself healthy and keep doing what I love. I’m not in this for my name to be everywhere; I’m in this because I love my music and I’m consistently getting excited and inspired by other music. I don’t like to make music that fits in with everybody’s playlist. I want to be that guy someone shows his friend and they’re both like what the fuck in a good way.

.

.

.

Tell us your weakness and strength pertaining music.

My strength would be that I make more music than probably any artist you’ve heard of; I complete multiple songs every day. And have been doing so for years, I’m sitting on a stockpile of beats as big as some artists have done in a decade and this is about 10 months with this new computer. Lord knows how much I’ve made in my life. A weakness may be that I’m not as musically technical as some people as I’m completely self-taught but it’s not that I don’t know what I’m doing; it’s that I don’t always know the terms to describe what I need to do. Simple as that and hasn’t really gotten in the way yet.

List your five favourite songs including the artists.

Knxwledge – Onlijournitro

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib – Thuggin’

J Dilla – Life

RetcH – Since My Dog Died

J Dilla – U-Love

Tell us your position on “DIY” Do It Yourself” and signing to a major label.

I’m not interested in major labels unless I am an in-house producer and major labels probably aren’t interested in me. I’m welcome to smaller labels that can pay a fair rate and don’t control everything so I can have creative freedom. I’m

planning on doing it myself until something comes up so clearly DIY is the way I’m going.

.

.

.

Tell us other activities you will like to pursue apart from music.

Anything art related really but overall music, especially right now, is all I do when I’m not doing school or work.
