Tell us how you develop your sound and style to make it different from other musicians.
Each track varies really, but a lot of the time I start with the hook (lyrically) and some basic keys or guitar chords. From there I’ll layer various instruments and build the other sections based around that core idea.

Tell us your opinion on the way new artists are coming up and the frequent release of songs.
On one side it means there is a lot of over saturation, but it pleases me to see so many people being able to express and release music to a completely open audience via the internet.

Tell us your experience as a musician.
It’s a hard one, balancing work, social life and being productive but it’s not so hard anymore since I’ve been creating and releasing music since my early teens. I’ve somehow learnt to manage my time so I find time to be creative when I need to. There’s no feeling like playing live to an appreciative audience who understand and love what you do.

Tell us your opinion on streaming and digital download of songs.
There are pro’s and con’s to streaming music digitally, financially it doesn’t benefit the artist/label but it does allow almost everybody to access new music which is definitely as plus.

Tell us how you see yourself in the coming time as a musician.
My sound has already developed further since writing and recording my debut release, I’m learning more piano and taking the song ideas in a new direction with greater hints of jazz and soul in that sound.

Tell us five current artists that are your favourite presently.
King Krule, Anderson Paak, Badbadnotgood, Noname, Tyler the Creator.

Tell us your best song up to date and share the link.
I think it’s got to be ‘Trapped’ my debut single. I collaborated on the instrumental with the incredibly talented Ben Holyoake & Oliver Cocup. However, I’m already working on new projects that are miles ahead in quality to my debut release.

Tell us your dream and hope for the future.
To live comfortably writing sad, jazz songs.

Tell us what you think has changed in the music industry.
The digital aspect whilst I was growing up completely changed everything. The introduction of downloads, streaming etc. meant that any song is at your fingertips. But having grown up buying a lot of records and eventually getting into crate digging for making beats means that I never really stopped buying physicals.

Tell us your opinion on TV and radio stations playing the same songs from established artists mostly and giving little chances to independent artists.

I think it kinda sucks but is also understandable, companies are always going to want to use established artists to push brands and advertise and evidently it works to some degree. It would be nice to see some unestablished artists on the DFS adverts though.

.

Tell us the challenges you think independent artists are facing and how it can be tackled.

The whole package of establishing yourself independently is a challenge. But stay creative, make sure your work is something to be proud of, get feedback as much as you can and collaborate where you can with artists you respect and admire. From there you’ll already be creating art that is worth putting out into the world.

Tell us what you think about using social media to promote music online.
I think it’s a useful tool, I’ve discovered some of my favourite artists through social media and it gives the artists their chance to speak out about their own music (that’s if they control their own social media pages).

.

Tell us about the beginning of your music career.
I started playing guitar at the age of 10 and haven’t stopped since. Since then, I’ve sang, played guitar and bass in multiple bands, mainly rock, punk and metal bands. I started producing hip hop badly at 16 and still do for a collective I run called Beat Bandit Recordings, an instrumental hip hop group. Mac Lloyd is a project where I culminate all of the skills I’ve accumulated over the years.

.

.

Tell us what still motivates you to go on with your music career.
Music itself is enough motivation for me to want to make more. Every time I get a bit of feedback, positive or negative, it gives me more drive to go and create more, so if you don’t like my music, thank you! I’m going to keep making more regardless!

.

.

Tell us about you as a person.
I’m pretty laid back around people, but hard working when it comes to being productive and making music. I revolve everything around it pretty much. I live in a small, somewhat boring town called Chippenham so I’ve got to stay active as much as possible.

.

.

Elaborate on the story behind the song.
Trapped is written from the perspective of someone who feels complete and utter isolation from everyone else whilst going through a struggle. Even though many people have felt this way, it is easy to feel lost, vulnerable and alone in those sorts of times.

.

State the official date of release.
‘It’s Not All Bad, I Promise’ was released 1st March, 2018.

.

.

.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.
My artist name is Mac Lloyd, my real name is Robert McLeod so it’s just a play on that.

.

.

.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

‘Trapped’ is the title of the lead single and is pretty self-explanatory when you check the lyrics.

.

.

.

State the title of the album and the reason for picking the title.
I chose to call my project ‘It’s Not All Bad, I Promise’ as most of the topics I have written about hare projects that had a negative impact on my life. I thought it was both funny but also a reminder that despite everything that’s happened to me in the past couple of years, I’m still here doing just fine.
