Throughout the 70s, the band Silver Laughter made a name for themselves by writing catchy, hook laden rock songs with more than a hint of Beatles influence and by touring extensively throughout the United States and Canada. In their prime, tracks from the band’s two critically acclaimed albums and numerous singles could be heard on radio stations across the nation. Sadly, as the 70s drew to a close, the laughter stopped as the group disbanded.

In the years that followed, the band has been remembered and celebrated for their wonderful music. 2014 saw a Silver Laughter reunion when the band was inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Their albums and singles have become sought after collectibles, and the band’s amazing catalog of music was reissued on a German label in 2015 by New Music/Green Tree on both CD and vinyl.

Getting up on stage again for the Silver Laughter reunion re-ignited the fires of inspiration in bassist / vocalist / songwriter Mick Orton. Together with musicians Tom Kelley and Ricky Zero, Mick has begun a new chapter in his musical journey with his new band The Silvers! Not long after releasing their first CD single, “Running Away”/”Nothing Really Matters”, which also became their first animated video, drummer Glenn Stone joined the band.

Within just a few short months, the guys have already assembled an impressive collection of songs that would fill close to two albums and are coming up with new material constantly! Their first album, “After The Laughter”, was released in March of 2016. Most recently, their second animated video of the song, “No More (This Time I Mean It)” was also released on YouTube March 1, 2016.

Their first EP of 6 new songs called “End Of Summer” was released on August 31, 2016 along with their third video called “Just Fooling Around”.

The fun doesn’t stop there. The Silvers finished their second album, “PLAY!” in March of 2017 with producer, Drew Youngs, a NEW 14 song album.

In September of 2017, Drew Youngs replaced Ricky Zero in THE SILVERS who released a 7 song EP called “Another Summer”. They have also been chosen by people associated with “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” to be featured in a kids’ cartoon series called SILVERS which should be released in 2018!

Go into detail on why you love music as a career.

Mick says, “Ever since I was young I have wanted a career in music. I started on piano, but found it was easier to get into a band if I played guitar, bass or drums. There were so many guitar players out there that I decided to play bass so I could also write music and sing. After all, Paul McCartney was my hero.”

.

Brief us the feedback you are getting from fans on your music. People seem to really like our 60’s sound a lot. And we want to please as many people as we can, so we are developing as song writers and as recording artists.

.

.

.

Discuss the relevance of social networking to music.

We have found that Twitter and Facebook are excellent places to find fans. Also joining other related groups (such as those set up for musicians we like or fans of instruments) are an excellent source to drop our name!

.

.

.

Tell us how you record your song.

The songwriter usually records a demo for the others to play to. This sets the tempo and general feel of the song so that the others can play along. Then our producer joins it all up in the end.

.

.

.

Tell us the story behind the song.

This song was written with a positive message. THE SILVERS come to the rescue and blow away the bad guys in a whirlwind of positive music.

.

.

.

State your musical skills.

I am fortunate enough to be able to play bass, guitar, piano and have played drums in the past. I do most of the vocals and write most of the songs with a little help from Tom and Drew.

.

.

.

Tell us how long it takes to complete a song from the start.

It can really depend on the song how long it takes to write. Some of them come quickly, so require a bit more thought. For example, one of the songs on our upcoming album to be released in May came to me while I was walking the dog. Occasionally I get stuck on lyrics and send them over to Tom or Drew who help me get the message across.

.

.

.

Go into detail on how you develop your lyrics and melody.

My songs usually start with a bit of meditation to try and tap into that universal source out there, and then I pick up the guitar and start strumming. Once I get a nice hook, I record it on this little hand recorder I have (so I won’t forget if I stall or get called away). Then I go to my 8 track recording unit and lay down a drum track with my BOSS drum machine which I call Ringo. I record the beats per minute on the lyrics sheet in case I have to redo the drum track. Next comes guitar, then bass and finally some vocals. I try and put in harmonies and backups so the other guys know what I am after. Sometimes they listen! 😊

.

.

.

.

Discuss music in full details.

It seems to me music has gotten extremely over produced in most recent years. THE SILVERS are trying to somewhat simplify our recordings but still with top notch mixing and mastering.

.

.

.

State your favourite genres of music with reasons.

I think our favorite genres of music are pop because of the hooks and melodies. Second would be rock because of the harder edge we use sometimes. Then there is some reggae that we implement from time to time because of the bounciness and fun lyrics they often use.

.

.

.

Discuss your rehearsal.

THE SILVERS don’t rehearse because we don’t play live. We are a geographically diverse band with Tom and Glenn on opposite sides of Wisconsin, and Drew and me out here on the West Coast San Francisco Bay Area. We use Dropbox and other methods that allow us to trade large WAV files for our tracks.

.

.

.

State your favourite musical instruments.

My favorite musical instrument is bass, of course. But I love the combined sound of drums, bass, guitars and keyboards (as well as strings and horns when we use them).

.

.

.

Discuss your personality in full details.

I am pretty easy going guy, but I do have specific ideas about my music which annoys my producer sometimes; on tracks we lay down and while I’m away, sometimes he adds instruments which change the feel of the song. Sometimes I like it, and sometimes I do not. I have no problem telling someone what I think!

List your musical work.

Back in the mid to late 70’s my music partner at the time was Jon and we wrote about 24 songs during our years together on the road in SILVER LAUGHTER which resulted in two albums, “Handle With Care” and “Sailing On Fantasies”. Both are now collector’s items. We toured the Midwest and Canada extensively until 1979.

When SILVER LAUGHTER split up, the guitar player for that group, Ken, and I moved to California wrote a bunch of songs that were finally recorded 2 of them in 2015 on our first CD. At Christmas time 2016 we wrote and recorded a song called “What Are You Christmas?” It received rave reviews and was downloadable from our website until the end of that year.

In March of 2016 we released a 14 original song album by THE SILVERS called “After The Laughter” released in March of 2016. Most of them were co-written with my pal from SILVER LAUGHTER, Ken. However, he chose not to join the group, so I enlisted Ricky, an online friend from Atlanta, to play guitar as well as an old pal, Tom, to play guitar also. Glenn used to do sound and lights for SILVER LAUGHTER and was a drummer in his own right. So I tapped him for that job.

Then in September of 2016 we released a 6 song EP called “End of Summer”. All songs were originals as well. At the end of the year we released a downloadable Christmas song on our website called, “Sing Another Christmas Song”.

In March of 2017 we replaced Ricky with Drew who also plays many instruments and sings and writes as well. We put out another album of 14 all original songs called “PLAY!”.

Then in September of 2017 we released a 7 original song EP called “Another Summer”. It contains the hit song, “Yes, You Can”.  In December we released two more Christmas tunes, “Christmas Dance” and “My Favorite Christmas Dish” along with the other two songs and allowed them to be downloaded for free until the end of the year.

Right now we are busy finishing up a third 14 original song LP of original songs called “Soul Surrender”. It should be out in May.

Share your memorable experiences with us.

Some of the most memorable experiences were meeting people we’d only heard on the radio like SUGAR LOAF, JOE WALSH, LYDIA PENCE & IN COLD BLOOD, GREGG ALLMAN, and even met TINY TIM at a venue in Iowa!

.

Share your press release and reviews with us.

We have all of this on our website under reviews. We have been featured in SHINDIG! Magazine several times as well as other publications.

.

.

.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.

We are THE SILVERS. The band in the ‘70’s was called SILVER LAUGHTER and just as THE SILVER BEATLES dropped the SILVER, we dropped LAUGHTER and became THE SILVERS.

.

.

.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

“Yes, You Can” is the title of our hit single (which is also an animated video on YouTube as are several of our other songs) and refers to the chance we all have of facing huge odds and overcoming them. Yes, you can!

.

.

.

State the title of the album and the reason for choosing the title.

The song is off our 7 song EP called “Another Summer”. Since our first 6 song EP was called “End of Summer” we decided to go with something similar. Also because they were both released at the end of summer in September.
