Asbjørn

Tell us your real names, country of birth and childhood experience.

I am Asbjørn from Denmark and I have been a pop geek since July 2nd 1992.

.

.

.

Tell us your academic qualification.

Got a B.A. in singing from the Royal Music Academy of Denmark.

.

.

.

Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience and skills.

I come from one of those annoying families where we did music for fun all the time. So it’s just a way to hang out and be happy for me. Started my own label at 18 when nobody wanted to sign me and have been my own boss ever since.

.

.

.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

I just love pop music and pop culture, so everything I do is an attempt to honor my pop ancestors, while trying to contribute to a more open and diverse male ideal in the pop industry

.

.

.

Tell us how to run a record label independently and successfully based on your experience as an artist.

I make music to create a community, a place where people feel safe and without filter. So it’s all about meeting my audience and interacting with them, to build this little world for all of us, if it’s an album, a live show or a music video.

.

.

.

Tell us how you are promoting your music.

I tell stories about what it means to be a boy or a man today and hope that people recognize and relate some of the struggles and joys.

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you happy and what makes you sad.

The reason why I love dancing is because it’s such a filterless space. I can’t control myself when I lose myself to the music, and that’s everything I wish for in an interaction with people. So I guess too much self-control makes me sad, both in me and other people, because it shields you.

.

.

.

Explain clearly the story or concept behind the song.

The song says it all really- it’s one of the simplest lyrics I’ve ever written. “You got nothing to lose, unless you lose yourself to me”.

.

.

.

List the radio stations, TV stations and blogs that have aired or featured your new song.

Very happy for the support from Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music so far. And so many of the blogs and media who’ve backed me up my whole career are still supporting, I am so happy.

.

.

.

Give us links to where the song can be purchased.

.

.

.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

I wrote and produced the demo in my living room and finished it with Rob Rox in Berlin, where we also recorded the video. My video team and I created the BOY PWR House Gym as a frame for the story.

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

Tough one to sum up. Since I started my label it’s been a big ever changing montage. My goal is to keep surfing on that wave of “I don’t know what the fuck anyone’s doing but I’m going to make pop music from the heart”.

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you unique from others.

We all think and talk in our unique ways; I guess I am just a little more self-absorbed and made it my job.

.

.

.

Tell us your weakness and strength pertaining music.

I am constantly drawn and torn between simplicity and a wider picture. And when I get the balance right, that’s when I am best – but I often overcomplicate my songs, because I want more nuances to the story.

.

.

.

List your five favourite songs including the artists.

Wheatus – Teenage Dirtbag

Tinashe – Superlove (Danny L Harle Remix)

Ghosted – Get Some

Britney Spears – Everytime

Blondage – Stoned

.

.

.

Tell us your position on “DIY” Do It Yourself” and signing to a major label.

I’ve never really considered myself a DIY artist, because I work quite collectively. And to my surprise, it’s actually the same feeling of collective work effort and passion, working with Virgin Records.

.

.

.

Tell us other activities you will like to pursue apart from music.

Dance, drink beer and hang out with my best friends and family.

.

.

.

List your various works.

Sunken Ships (2012), Pseudo Visions (2015).

.

.

.

State links to connect you on social media.

@asbjornmusic everywhere!

.

.

.

State the official date of release.

The release date of the next album is not public yet, so my lips are sealed.

.

.

.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.

It’s my actual name and means God Bear.

.

.

.

State the title of the album and the reason for picking the title.

BOY PWR celebrates the diversity of being male. I want us to free ourselves. I want us to not give a fuck about what is predefined ‘masculine’ and start defining it ourselves. Women have fought for that right for decades and changed pop and youth culture for girls. Girl Power empowered me, as a boy, and I hope BOY PWR can empower boys and girls around the world to defy the stereotypes and decide for themselves who they want to be.
