Anne Tan, Mella Barnes

The performance was done by Mella Barnes, who is absolutely an amazing singer.

Anne Tan is a songwriter originally from China and currently living in New Zealand. She enjoys the popular music of her homeland, and music by songwriters such as ABBA, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Enya, Elton John, and Disney film scores. Her work has been featured on WOA Entertainment’s Independent No.1’s Vol.8 compilation album. She wishes to spread beauty and joy through her music, and to hopefully write something as great as the works of her idols someday.

Go into detail on why you love music as a career.

I can create something beautiful – hopefully – and have people love it. What can be better than that? Having said that, I’m not sure if I can really use the word “career” to describe my songwriting yet.

.

.

.

Brief us the feedback you are getting from fans on your music.

I don’t have many fans, but of the few I do have, people have been telling me things like “what a beautiful song!” That makes me very happy, because it is the one thing I want to hear the most.

.

.

.

Discuss the relevance of social networking to music.

You pretty much can’t do without it these days as a musical artist. It can be pressuring to have all those social networks on 24/7. Still, it allows me to reach and be reached by people from all over the world, which is a great thing!

.

.

.

Tell us how you record your song.

I work with the people at Tunedly.com, which is an excellent online business which will give you a very professional mastered mix. The people who work there are often extremely amazing, singers, musicians, engineers, which is great because my musical talents are limited to playing the piano, coming up with chords, and singing very badly. They’ve been very kind to me, and very understanding when I keep bugging them about tiny changes I want to make – ha ha! I definitely recommend Tunedly.

.

.

.

Tell us the story behind the song.

I’d like to say I experienced it myself, or that I knew a friend who did, but in reality, the idea for this song came from a character in a TV sitcom who fell in love with a jerk who cheated on her and she moved out, and I just thought “maybe I could write a song about how she feels?”

.

.

.

State your musical skills.

I know some basic music theory (took the class in high school) and how to play the piano and flute a very, very little. I like to think of myself as someone who can come up with good melodies.

.

.

.

Tell us how long it takes to complete a song from the start.

If I work on it every day, about a week. Added to that, if I submit it for reviews and then re-write, a whole song takes me around a month if I don’t procrastinate, which admittedly I often do.

.

.

.

Go into detail on how you develop your lyrics and melody.

I will often write a verse, and then play something on the piano that fits the mood of that verse, and if it sounds good enough, I will take it as the melody and alter the words to fit it. Sometimes I’m lucky enough to have an entire chorus that seems to just pop into my head, music, words and all, if I’m feeling inspired enough. But it rarely happens, and more often than not, it happens after I’ve “forced” myself to work on songwriting for a while. So it’s both inspiration and perspiration as Einstein said.

Discuss music in full details.

Music to me is one of the greatest joys of life. It is extremely powerful and can move us in just about any emotional direction, for good or ill. I hope I’m using my own musical powers for good.

.

.

.

State your five favourite genres of music with reasons.

I just like anything beautiful and grand. For that reason, songs written for musicals appeal to me a lot. Some of my favourites are Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables, and anything in the Disney musical films. I am also very fond of Chinese popular music, because it reminds me of my homeland, and easy listening, especially Richard Clayderman’s piano tunes, because they are designed to be relaxing. They invoke images of beautiful landscapes, oceans and sunsets for me, which I enjoy greatly. I am also a fan of the enduring big pop hits with excellent melodies, such as ABBA, Elton John and the songs of Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion and such.

.

.

.

State your favourite musical instruments.

I love the piano and flute. They just create such beautiful sounds. I am also fascinated by the sound of the panflute.

.

.

.

Describe the chemistry between you and your fans during a live performance.

Being a rather shy songwriter, I’m satisfied by being the one to write the songs. Hopefully someday someone will bring them to a live performance.

.

.

.

Discuss your personality in full details.

I’m actually very private and shy, and it’s easy for me to be embarrassed when given a compliment. But once you get me talking on something I’m interested in, I can’t stop! I’m obsessed with everything beautiful and with having fun. I like to think I’m very good with words, and apart from writing song lyrics, I have an embarrassing bad pun addiction.

.

.

.

Discuss your music career.

I am currently writing songs as a hobby, with a “real job” to pay the bills. Hopefully, someday I will no longer need the “real job”, but I’m grateful for it as it allows me to afford my rather expensive hobby.

Share your memorable experiences with us.

The most memorable experience I’ve had so far was when my song “Dream A Dream” was actually chosen for WOA Record’s compilation, as mentioned. It is by far the greatest success I have ever achieved (real contract and everything!) and I was extremely flattered to be chosen.

.

.

.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.

Anne Tan is a pseudonym chosen by me. I didn’t like my real name because it didn’t, in my opinion, look or sound very pretty, and I wanted to have a nod to my Chinese heritage in my “artist name”, so I used my mother’s surname Tan. Anne is from Anne Shirley, the heroine of the Anne of Green Gables book series, because she’s a character I identify with in so many ways. Probably because she is also obsessed with beauty and daydreams too much.  (Note that I included the E in Anne. I agree with her that it looks much better than “Ann”.

.

.

.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

“I Will Carry On” came naturally from the story I was writing in this song, that of a young woman who fell in love, was betrayed, and deeply hurt…but realized that she can still keep living and be happy without “him”, just as herself, and that she won’t let the pain define or determine her. I hope that anyone that had a similar experience, women or men, can find encouragement in this song if they hear it.
