Zacharyah Bey – Barefoot

State your reason for choosing music as a career.

Music helps keep me sane. Doing music is like therapy. I feel this allows me to live in my truth and I don’t know how to live any other way.

.

.

Tell us how you write the lyrics to your song.

I don’t write my songs. Generally I let the instrumental bring the lyrics out of me. Usually the song comes out linear, from start to finish.

.

.

.

Discuss your life outside the music world.

I am a Moor. I am all about nature and righteousness. I work a part time job in customer service.

.

.

.

Discuss your music career.

I began recording music in high school. I’ve worked with different people and learned a lot. This is the beginning of me being comfortable with whom I am and ready to share my music.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your artist’s name.

Zacharyah Bey – Zachariah is a Hebrew name that translates closely to “The Lord has remembered.” I chose the name because I used to feel lost and forgotten. Bey is a Moorish title that is about enforcing the Laws of the Creator. Basically being obedient to the commandments.

.

.

.

Tell us your source of inspiration.

Everything. The good, the bad and the ugly.

.

.

.

List your favourite music videos with reasons.

Street Fighter Mas – Kamasi Washington – Intense, cool and funny.

I Won’t Complain – Benjamin Clementine – It seems like a classic film. I like the creativity involved. Fun to watch.

.

.

.

Tell us your impression on dealing with paparazzi.

I am not much of a people-person. I’m still working on how to handle compliments about my music.

.

.

.

Elaborate on the recording of this song.

They usually go the same way because I like to have them down before I go to the studio. That way the process goes by smooth and simple.

.

.

.

Tell us your future projects.

I have a project that features this song ‘Barefoot’ coming very soon, and two more after that.

.

.

.

List the names of those that have supported you so far.

Jordan Collins.

.

.

.

Tell us your thought on quality and quantity for the release of songs.

I think stories tell themselves in different ways. Quantity may determine quality. In my case, I feel my story tells itself best when things are brief, simple, and sweet. So I like to keep my projects short. If I were to try and increase the quantity, I feel I would only dilute the quality.

.

.

.

List your favourite movies with reasons.

City of God – Good story told in an incredible way and great cinematography. I like how characters and locations interacted throughout.

The Prestige – Feels new every time I watch.

.

.

.

Tell us your opinion on categorizing music into genres and sub-genres.

Could be good for the convenience of consumers. Maybe not so good when categories disqualify perspectives and ideas.

.

.

.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

Barefoot – The chorus is about taking life/situations “one step at a time.” I think the best walks are barefoot.
