Trés Hanley Millman – Road Not Taken

Tell us how you develop your sound and style to make it different from other musicians.

I come from a classical and theatre background and most of my music has been just that. So venturing into the pop music world and songwriting is something new. As a theatre person you learn early on to just be yourself so I never thought of trying to do a ‘sound’. I learned a long time ago you can’t please everyone so you might as well just create and love what you do and hopefully there will be people who will enjoy it too.

.

.

.

Tell us your experience as a musician.

Again coming from a theatre background, I’ve worked with some amazing multi-faceted performers. What I’ve tried to do is to watch and learn and take in the joy they have from what they do and see how contagious that is.

.

.

.

Tell us your opinion on streaming and digital download of songs.

I think it’s great, I think it is good for the ecology having less HARD COPIES of music, doing away with CD’s etc.

.

.

.

Tell us your goals and plans.

Hopefully this album will be well received and we’ll continue to write more music.

.

.

.

Tell us five current artists that are your favourite.

I actually like foreign music best, love Gigi d’Alessio, Lara Fabian etc., but I adore Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera and Bruno Mars too.

.

.

.

Tell us your best song up to date and share the link.

I would say it probably was my international dance single, “Dance of the Euro Diva” The music was composed by Éric Serra. The piece was originally written for the film The Fifth Element. The club version was a collaboration with Asian Rap artist BURCH. Available on iTunes.

.

.

.

Tell us your dream and hope for the future.

I’ve had an amazing career and hope to continue now doing something different finding a new audience.

.

.

.

Tell us your opinion on television/radio stations playing the same songs from established artists and giving little chances to independent artists.

Well they are paid by the big companies to do that. So it’s great there are stations and internet channels that people can find new artists!

.

.

.

Tell us the challenges independent artists are facing and how to tackle it.

Again I think it’s battling the big record companies but I think more and more people are breaking the music glass ceiling with the internet. It’s a great thing!

ROAD NOT TAKEN is the 2nd pre-release single from her upcoming album SHADES OF DARKNESS. It follows the first song FADE TO BLACK which is a tribute to her friend the late Spanish film composer Bernardo Bonezzi. The new album will be the 4th offering by Tres Hanley-Millman, and the first to be almost exclusively original works.  Miss Hanley-Millman and composer/arranger Daniel Moctezuma collaborated on the title song for her 2013 release “A Siren’s Odyssey”.  SHADES OF DARKNESS is the team’s first venture into the pop/adult contemporary music world. Both Miss Hanley and Mr. Moctezuma (who began his career as a pit pianist on Broadway) have their roots in theatre music.

Miss Hanley is probably best known as an actress for her work in TV (primarily in the UK) and in parts of Europe as the Bacardi girl.  In 2007 she had a European club hit Dance of the Euro Diva – a collaboration with French composer Eric Serra (The Fifth Element) and the Asian rap artist Burch. A teenage protégé of Leonard Bernstein, Tres attended the Juilliard School of Music when she was chosen by him to sing as the Principal Female Soloist  in one of the Last Great Composers Series at Lincoln Center which he conducted her singing his Tour De Force ‘GLITTER & BE GAY’ from Candide and more.

She went on to perform in numerous musicals in the U.S. and abroad, including My Fair Lady (ELIZA) and Camelot (GUINEVERE). In the London Revival of the Beggar’s Opera, she made history as the first “Non-British Born” actress to play “Polly Peachum” in Britain since the musical was performed in 1728.

Tres went on to call London ‘HOME’ and establish herself as a well-respected TV Actress, working with some of the best of British talent. Her U.K. credits include the role of ‘YOUNG JEAN’ in As Time Goes By, starring OSCAR winner Dame Judy Dench (who plays Jean), Casualty, Hale & Pace, and Murder Most Horrid. Tell us what still motivates you to go on with your music career.

I don’t think I have any motivation other than I love what I’m doing!

.

.

.

Tell us about you as a person.

I’m a vegetarian and animal activist. Profits from my music go to animal rescues and charities for HIV support and the visually impaired.

.

.

.

Elaborate on the story behind the song.

It tells the story of us all. Each of us all has had these thoughts and questions through our life. And what it comes down to is no matter what our choices have been – if we did it all over again, we’d still have those same questions.

.

.

.

Tell us the process involved in making this song.

My collaborator and I had a conversation that led us to writing the song!

.

.

.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.

Tres Hanley-Millman – TRÈS is pronounced “TREY” as in the French ‘VERY’.

.

.

.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

The title of the song has no particular meaning behind it.

.

.

.

State the title of the album and the reason for choosing the title.

The project is called SHADES OF DARKNESS.  The idea came from some pretty dark stuff.

A longtime friend of mine who was very celebrated film composer, committed suicide a couple of years ago. It was not publicly reported it was suicide, but everyone close to him knew it was. His last post to a few of us was “I’m Fading to Black” which is where I got the title of the 1st song on the album from and why I wrote it for him.  We spoke often, right up to few days before he died. I knew he was down about something he was working on, but never thought he was that depressed. Needless to say it hit me hard.

So I wanted to write something for him. It was therapeutic for me to do, but also I wanted a tribute to him. It was the first song Daniel and I wrote for this new project.

But also this gave us the idea to explore the dark places people go. That so many of us never discuss or are never aware of, never let the world see. Let’s face it; we all have secrets or struggles of some sort.

Of course not everything is going to be so bleak or heavy! That’s why it’s called Shades of Darkness!
