Lenny Keys – I See

Born in Odessa, Ukraine, Lenny started studying classical piano at the age of six. In 1979, Lenny immigrated with his family to the U.S. In 1991, Lenny relocated to Hawaii. Influenced by a classical education, classic rock, European pop music, jazz and new age, Lenny developed his own unique style of writing. Having composed in different styles, Lenny has always stayed true to one thing that he believes in – every song should have a beautiful melody.

.

Brief us on how to impress fans during a live performance.

It depends on type of the audience. Usually, honesty is your best friend. People can see a fake a mile away.

.

.

.

List the names of your biggest supporters.

My family and my muse.

.

.

.

Explain what has motivated you so far in your music career.

I love doing what I do – performing live, composing, recording, experimenting.

.

.

.

Discuss your experience as an artist.

This is a loaded question. But to make long story short, my experiences as an artist were excitement, challenges, frustration, and reward. Because I’m still growing as an artist, I will have more experiences, keeping up with technology, expanding my musical palette of styles and so on.

.

.

.

Tell us the biggest mistake you have ever made in your music career.

While living in New York and limiting myself to play for ethnic Russian nightclubs only, I regret not trying out American market.

.

.

.

Discuss the story behind the song.

I wrote it years ago. It’s a reminiscent song about love that could have been, but never happened. And after seeing what Hawaii has to offer as far as scenery I decided to make a video and rerecord it.

.

.

.

Tell us how to fund a music project.

It depends on the size of the project and what one is trying to create. First set a goal. Figure out your budget. Cut out unnecessary expenses and save up as much as you can. Or one can try Kickstarter.

.

.

.

Discuss your opinion on the safety of fans during shows and live performances.

People want to enjoy the performance and some use drugs and alcohol to enhance the experience. That in turn affects their safety because intoxicated people don’t control themselves fully. Even at classical music concerts, people drink wine. So it is each individual’s responsibility to know their limits. And of course adequate security is a must.

.

.

.

Tell us the greatest piece of advice someone has given you as an artist.

Hiding behind someone’s talent you’ll never know if you HAVE IT.

.

.

.

Tell us what you will improve or change in your music.

We are all trying to grow no matter what we do. Today, technology changes very fast and it’s hard to keep up. Staying up to date with it is my goal, and staying true to what I believe – EVERY SONG HAS TO HAVE A BEAUTIFUL MELODY.

.

.

.

Discuss vocal training and how you protect your vocal.

I took private lessons in Bel Canto vocal training for some years. That taught me how to reserve my voice for longer time. As for protecting voice, it’s all individual. Some singers like to abuse their voice on purpose to make it sound hoarser.

.

.

.

Discuss your best mood during performance.

When I perform, the energy that comes from me to the audience reflects back at me hundred fold. That feeling is what every performer wants to experience every time.

.

.

.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.

Name is Lenny Keys. I play piano. Enough said.

.

.

.

List your best artists with reasons.

If you’re asking about my favorite artists, I like and respect those artists who are honest in their music without trying to sound like someone else. Some of my favorites are: Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Sting, Stevie Wonder… Unfortunately, today this trait is hard to find.

.

.

.

Discuss your existence as an artist.

It’s a fun life if you’re good at what you do, but to get there you must put in a lot of time practicing.

.

.

.

Tell us the greatest problem you think is facing the society and the solution.

Political correctness kills honesty.

.

.

.

Discuss your songwriting and recording.

Sometimes I can write a song in a matter of 10-20 minutes. Or it can take up to a few days/weeks. The right tools are important, like small handheld digital recorder, or online thesaurus… As for recording, if there’s no deadline, I keep experimenting until I like what I hear. If stuck, it’s good to take a 2 – week break from a song and work on different one.
