Ward Thomas – Never Know

English twin sisters Catherine and Lizzy Ward Thomas made chart history when their second album, Cartwheels, became the first country record by a British act ever to top the U.K. album chart, beating the long-established Jamie T to the top spot. Born in 1994 and brought up on a farm in rural Hampshire, the girls attended a local convent school and were turned on to country music as teenagers when a friend played them the Dixie Chicks. Both talented singers and instrumentalists, they started writing together while in the sixth form, bringing a uniquely British perspective to the genre.

When one of their teachers, who had once been a backup singer in Nashville, forwarded their demos to some old contacts, the sisters were invited to record their debut album there. Released in 2014 and entitled From Where We Stand, it had a fairly traditional sound that showcased their beautiful close-harmony vocals. Relentlessly championed by easy listening tastemaker station BBC Radio 2, the album peaked at number 41 in the U.K. album chart, selling 25,000 copies. The sisters toured heavily in its support, steadily increasing their fan base by word of mouth.

In 2016 they signed to Sony for the release of their second album, Cartwheels. While parts of the album, particularly the gorgeous title track, stayed true to the traditionalist sound of their debut, it often strayed significantly from “pure” country; some tracks bore the stamp of Fleetwood Mac’s country-rock-influenced Rumours, while others were just contemporary pop/rock. The girls’ songwriting knack was undiminished, however, and the British public voted with their wallets, sending the album to number one and officially making Ward Thomas the most successful British country act ever.

CHVRCHES – Graffiti

CHVRCHES release ‘Graffiti’, the third single from their acclaimed recent album Love Is Dead, as the band prepare to kick off their biggest US tour to date; European and UK shows follow later in the year and into 2019. Speaking about the nostalgic meaning behind ‘Graffiti’, Lauren Mayberry references the classic ode to childhood friendship Rob Reiner’s Stand By Me and explains it’s a about “growing up and realising things aren’t going to be the way you thought they would be.”

CHVRCHES are Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty. Love Is Dead is the band’s third album, following their top 10 debut The Bones of What You Believe (2013) and its top 5 critically acclaimed follow up Every Open Eye (2015). Featuring the singles ‘Miracle’ and ‘Get Out,’ as well as the previously released ‘My Enemy’ (feat. The National’s Matt Berninger) and ‘Never Say Die’, Love Is Dead is an album about growing up and “coming to terms with the fact that there are great things in the world and there are awful things in the world and that you can’t get one without the other,” says Mayberry. For the first time in their career, Love Is Dead sees CHVRCHES welcome outside influences, with 2017 and 2018 GRAMMY Producer of the Year Greg Kurstin (Adele, Sia) co-producing nine tracks, whilst BRIT Award Producer of the Year 2018 Steve Mac also produces a song.

Last month, CHVRCHES released a new song ‘Out Of My Head’, featuring acclaimed Japanese electro pop group Wednesday Campanella. The track is the band’s first new material since the release of the album and is accompanied by a stunning video created by director Junichi Yamamoto (Pop Team Epic, Batman Ninja) and art director Yoshiki Imazu (Ringing City, Fluffiction).

CHVRCHES have announced their first UK tour in two years, as well as a headline US arena tour, and a European tour for November. See below for dates and visit www.chvrch.es for tickets.

GoodnGone – Momma Don’t

Goodngone is a rocking Texas country band out of Dallas, Texas. Goodngone combines classic twang with modern rock guitar and choral hooks to attain their sound. Goodngone is Jimmie Davidson (vocals/guitar), Richie Davis (drums), Forrest Johnson (bass), and Tom Brandish (lead guitar).

.

.

.

Tell us your real names, country of birth and childhood experience.

We use our real names (Jimmie Davidson, Richie Davis, Forrest Johnson, and Tom Brandish). We are all from Texas (USA), thus we couldn’t escape country music during our childhoods. However, we branched out into rock n roll during our rebellious years, but settled back into country in adulthood and that combination is heard in our music.

.

.

.

Tell us your academic qualification.

I (Jimmie) have a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas, but I don’t think it really has any effect on our music. What does though is the life experience of living in a college town and being exposed to a variety of great musicians.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music career, band name, experience and skills.

Our band’s name, Goodngone, is taken from a Chris Cagle song, ‘What Kinda Gone’. It has an attitude about and much of music is about love lost, heartbreak, leaving, etc., so we thought it was cool sounding. We have all been playing music for at least 30 years. Goodngone was formed in January of 2009 so we are coming up on our 10th anniversary.

.

.

.

Tell us your genre and idea behind your music song.

This is a tricky one, as we are a bit all over the road when it comes to genre. We call ourselves “rockin Texas country” and probably fit into the country rock genre as well as any. ‘Momma Don’t’ is a song that has an old Waylon Jennings feel to it but is about as hard rockin of a song that we have produced to date. It’s a song about not giving up on someone who is struggling with a life issue.

.

.

.

Tell us how to run a record label based on your experience as an artist.

If I were to run a label, I would throw away convention and sign artists who are true to their music and not chasing what is popular right now or doing things in the expected or typical model. There should be no rules anymore in the streaming age, so artists should do songs that are as long or short as they and cross genres if they want. If it’s good it’s good. If it sucks, it sucks. But that’s all subjective, like most things in life.

.

.

.

List your various works.

Our first EP was self-titled in 2010. It was made on a limited budget (hell, we still are on one of those but not as much as back then). It had our first five songs on it. Our first full album was “Home” and it was released a couple of years ago. There are some great songs on there, but again, the recording quality didn’t have the financing in it like this current record does. Our current full length record was just released this month (October 2018) and was recorded at Fort Worth Sound in Ft. Worth, Texas by producer Bart Rose. It is a radio quality record (at last).

.

.

.

Tell us how you are promoting your music.

Word of mouth is pretty much it. We don’t have a marketing budget, so free social media sites like Facebook and Instagram are utilized.

.

.

.

Explain the story behind the song.

‘Momma Don’t’ is a song about not giving up on someone who is struggling with an issue. It can be alcohol or anything really. It just talks about the struggles with trying to keep faith in someone who is not in a healthy state of being at the moment. But the character feels like he just about has it all worked out and is ready for change, so Momma Don’t give up on me now (I just about got this figured out).

.

.

.

State the names of other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director.

.

.

.

Tell us other activities you are pursuing apart from music.

We all have our things, but I enjoy playing ice hockey and am in two leagues a week (Jimmie).

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music business, your experience and your future goal.

I have been playing in bands since I was 14, so that was in 1981 or so. Goodngone is coming up on ten years of existence and we just want to keep making good music for people to enjoy. It would be nice to have a wider audience and that’s our biggest goal and challenge in this modern era.

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you unique from others.

The blend of country and rock is not unique, but it’s not that common. Our backgrounds give us a unique sound though. You combine four humans and their influences and it’s going to colour things a certain way.
