Yellow Days – How Can I Love You

Yellow Days continues his prolificacy with a brand new single, How Can I Love You? through Columbia Records. For what has ostensibly been an independent bedroom/garden shed based project for the nineteen year old Surrey based musician, Yellow Days is now taking the blueprint of his acclaimed acid-tinged sound to a bigger space, and painting it with broader, denser and brighter brush strokes.

How Can I Love You? follows the Spring release of single, The Way Things Change, as George van den Broek’s first musical output since signing a record deal, and whilst everything he recorded throughout 2018 was performed by George alone, here he opens the door to a collective of musicians to assist in delivering a sound that remains very much his own, and alongside production in a bigger studio space. The sonics here remain as potent as ever, a lounge-y, louche jazz piano opens the track before a loose groove kicks-in. Trumpets puncture the space at the back of the track before moving effortlessly to the forefront, and it evokes both his old soul n’ blues favourites that he listened to growing up, and some more contemporary sounds too (from Roy Ayers, Alton Elis, Pink Floyd right through to slacker prince Mac DeMarco). It’s a leftfield pop record, and oozing with modern soul.

Crucially, How Can I Love You? floats on its own cloud, and a sound that doesn’t sit comfortably with his supposed peers. Yellow Days has achieved so much to date (including a sold-out show at London’s KOKO back in the Summer, and back-to-back sold out US tours), whilst working deliberately out of the mainstream spotlight. This new single feels like Yellow Days confidently stepping out of the garden shed and into a much bigger league, without the need for any compromising. It’s a confident leap forward, and a tantalising taster of things to come.

Yellow Days heads back out on the road throughout October to headline a tour of the UK and Europe, including a night at Brixton Electric on the 29th October. He then returns to the US and Canada for a run of fourteen shows, including two sell-out nights in LA and two more in New York.
