Kat Saul Releases New Single titled “Unit 408”. With “Unit 408” Kat brings things close to home with a song entitled the name of her actual apartment unit number. Written about the all too relatable feeling of wishing an ex would come over late night, because after all, they “know the way” – “Unit 408” is a sexy alt/pop track that perfectly defines Kat Saul’s unapologetic writing sensibilities & left of center sound.

 

Growing up in Nashville, pop singer-songwriter Kat Saul learned to play guitar and piano at age five and started writing her own songs at age 13. By the time she was in high school, she was participating in professional writing sessions and is now one of the most buzzed about young pop writers in Music City.

 

She’s fresh off her latest release “Jericho,” a song Nashville Native Magazine calls “a definite max out the volume sing along,” and PopDust hails “a hot track that embodies exactly the kind of buzz she is making in the songwriting community.”

 

A little left from center, Kat’s sound is a blend of alt pop melodies and production with Nashville flavored lyrical sensibility.  Kat is influenced by Sia, Lorde, Gwen Stefani and the like.

 

Her electric live performance chops and undeniable stage presence makes her not only one of the most exciting young writers in Nashville’s emerging pop scene, but also one of the most entertaining performers. She recently played L.A.’s famed The Hotel Cafe and will perform next at Nashville’s The Basement on November 26 in support of her latest release “Unit 408.”

Swedish vocalist and songwriter Zara Larsson has a penchant for crafting soulful electropop that falls somewhere between Rihanna, Lorde, and Robyn. Born in Solna (a suburb of Stockholm), she first caught the public’s eyes and ears in 2008 as the winner of the popular Swedish talent show Talang Sverige (the regional version of Got Talent). Following the success of the show, she inked a deal with Ten Music Group and issued her debut EP, Introducing, which featured the hit single “Uncover,” in 2013. The song was certified triple-platinum in her home country, and after another EP, Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself, Larsson began work on her official debut long-player… Three additional singles reached the Swedish Top Ten: “She’s Not Me,” “Carry You Home,” and “Rooftop.”

 

A pair of 2015 singles proved to be her international breakthrough. First, “Lush Life” reached the Top Ten across Europe, then “Never Forget You” (featuring MNEK) hit the Top Ten in Great Britain and went gold in the United States. Those tracks would eventually appear on her sophomore LP. Before the release of that album, she collaborated with Tinie Tempah on “Girls Like” and David Guetta for the 2016 UEFA Euro Cup theme, “This One’s for You.” By the time So Good was released in early 2017, four additional singles had been issued, including the Charlie Puth-penned “So Good” with Ty Dolla $ign, “Symphony” with Clean Bandit, and the MNEK-produced “Ain’t My Fault.”

Born in the wilderness of New York City, raised in rural England and made on the streets of London, Jennings Couch is someone who embraces change. Since writing his first songs at the age of 7, Jennings has gone on to create a unique – and eccentric – pop voice. In the beginning of 2017 after having recorded an album’s worth of music, Jennings began gigging and within three months was on his way to Austin, Texas to perform at SXSW 2017. This was followed by a trip to Chengdu, China to perform at the 2017 Silk Road Indie Music Festival where Jennings won the award for ‘Best Song in Show’. Brief us on how to impress fans during a live performance.

Never lose eye contact. I was always told it’s super important to look your audience in the eyes when you’re performing. This was hard for me to do because I used to be super nervous and even turn my back to the audience. As soon as you do this, you lose their concentration. Let them be transfixed by you and the music!

List the names of your biggest supporters.

My career is still in its infancy so my biggest supporters are still my friends and girlfriend. But by far my biggest fan right now is my mum, bless her. She’s always believed I can make it as a songwriter and solo artist. People like that really give me confidence and the drive to succeed!

Explain what has motivated you so far in your music career.

The desire to make this my job has always driven me. The idea that I can make a living off of something I love doing – making music – has always been a driving force. I literally couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I don’t even know how to do anything else! As a songwriter, I want people to be able to relate to my music. It’s always been a dream of mine to play a huge stadium gig and have the entire audience singing my song back to me! I couldn’t think of anything better for a songwriter.

Discuss your experience as an artist.

I’m not going to lie, it’s been tough; loads of high moments and a lot more low moments. I’ve been close to quitting several times. It’s just so hard to make a splash in this day in age. The music market is so saturated, especially here in London, and it seems there’s no way to get your head above water. I believe it will take perseverance and passion. Once people start to take notice of what you’re doing, and they can see that you believe and love what you do, they will start to pay attention and the word will spread. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had some amazing moments playing shows as far away as China! It’s just interesting how you can be on such a high playing to hundreds of people on the other side of the world, then you come home and it feels like you are back to square one. Sitting at the computer, doing social media and trying to make it work.

Tell us the biggest mistake you have ever made in your music career.

Probably the biggest mistake was not starting my music career sooner! I started proper when I was 21, but if I did when I was 16 I believe I would be better at using social media and interacting with people online. Especially with vlogging. I hate vlogging, but it is so important and lets people see the real you! I just can’t do it though…

Discuss the story behind the song.

The story behind my new song ‘Saviour’ is about being strong-willed and determined. It is about carving your own path in society and not giving in to social norms, just being yourself. I emphasized this idea with a strong lead vocal performance in the song and lyrics like “Now my heart is on my tongue and I can’t help saying just what I want”. Lines like this give a sense of rebellion and speaking out against those who want to beat you down. Also, the static drumbeat gives a sense of walking or marching, as if you were taking your own path. Overall, I think I conveyed my ideas clearly and strongly through the lyrical and rhythmic content.

Tell us how to fund a music project.

There are many ways to fund a music project. Websites like Go Fund Me or Patreon are good ways to secure enough funding to record your next album or perhaps put on a small tour. However, I believe long term investment is necessary for a successful project. Once you have established yourself as an artist, it might be worth seeking investors who love your music and believe in your project. That way you can be sure the funds will be there when it’s time to release new music or tour the world!

Discuss your opinion on the safety of fans during shows and live performances.

Fan safety is key. If a fan has a bad experience at one of your shows, it is likely he won’t be your fan anymore. So it is paramount to make sure that the fans have a safe and enjoyable time. To be honest, fan safety and performance security are not my strongest subjects! But I do know that the safety of the public is of utmost importance. As an artist, I wouldn’t want anyone to have a bad experience at one of my shows, so of course fan safety is important to me.

Tell us the greatest piece of advice someone has given you as an artist.   

The greatest piece of advice someone has said to me is just keep pushing. Keep striving for success. No matter how depressed you get, keep going.

Tell us what you will improve or change in your music.

I am constantly evolving my sound and my performance. As I grow as an artist, I become inspired by other artists and bands and I get new ideas for my music as well. Just recently I’ve been discovering my ‘sound’ as an artist, both in songwriting and in my vocal delivery. My new song ‘Saviour’ is a perfect example of this. I am now leaning towards a slightly more edgy sound with strong vocals, whereas previously I was doing more ‘soft rock’ style music.

Discuss vocal training and how you protect your vocal.

Vocal training and technique is super important to me. I spend at least 40 minutes every other day doing vocal exercises, extending my range, making sure I keep developing my ‘sound’. Before any vocal session, whether I’m recording, doing a gig, or just rehearsing, I always warm up. It is so important to warm up your vocal chords and your face muscles, especially if you haven’t sung for a few days. My songs have quite strong vocal parts and high melodies so if I don’t warm up properly I can end up doing damage to my vocal chords. Before a gig I like to take a Vocalzone tablet or something similar just to open up the sinuses and relax the vocal chords.

Discuss your best mood during performance.

My best mood during a performance is when I just lose myself. I end up closing my eyes, listening to the music and enjoy singing to it. However, I forget that I’m supposed to be eye-balling the audience at all times. But I believe sometimes it’s good to show the audience that you can lose yourself. It shows them that you love and believe in what you do and that is a contagious feeling.

My artist name is my real name! – Jennings Couch. I know it is a strange name, but it is a family name…

Grandson – I love his mix of hip-hop and rock.

 

Twenty One Pilots – I believe they are at the forefront of blending genres like hip-hop, rap, rock and alternative / indie. It is something I want to experiment with as well.

 

Glass Animals – They have such a unique vibe and they are true to their sound. It’s great to see artists who have such a defined sound.

Discuss your existence as an artist.

I see the music industry as a huge brick wall and all of us artists are lined up at the wall trying to figure out how to break through into the industry. Some people have more success at breaking through the wall. For me right now, I am just picking at the brick wall with a needle. I need a bigger tool, something stronger to break the wall. This will come in the form of a song that I release, or a show that I play. I need something that will help me to break through. Once you’re in, people will start to take notice of you.

Tell us the greatest problem you think is facing the society and the solution.

In terms of the music industry, the greatest problem it is facing right now is lack of control. The music industry does not know how to cope with so many people releasing so much music all the time. Streaming is a problem too because the artists do not get paid for it. The only way an artist can actually make money is by playing big shows and selling merchandise. Or getting lucky and getting a song on a TV show or film, but again the market is so saturated: it is hard to get your head above water.

Discuss your songwriting and recording.

My songwriting takes many forms. I have no rules or guidelines. I just start with whatever I like: maybe it is a drumbeat, or a lyric that I like. Then I build the song piece by piece, always remembering to stay true to myself but also try and make the song relatable for all listeners. My favourite is the recording process. I love being in the studio with my producers making records. It is amazing to hear a song come together.

Marc Kinchen’s touch is subtle, but it has changed the course of dance music multiple times. Born in 1972, the Detroit native got his start crafting moody, groove-heavy deep house for Kevin Saunderson’s KMS label when he was just 17. By the early ’90s, Kinchen (better known as MK) was making his mark on underground dance floors with hits like “Always” and “Love Changes,” balancing strident drum programming with punchy keys and organ bass—a signature sound that quickly found him rising in stature as the industry’s go-to remixer, racking up credits for The B-52’s, Pet Shop Boys, Céline Dion, Moby, and dozens more across pop, dance, and R&B. In the 2000s, he shifted his focus to hip-hop and made beats for Will Smith and Pitbull, but as deep house came back into vogue, a new generation of fans gravitated to MK’s early work. It was his 2013 remix for Storm Queen’s “Look Right Through”—skeletal, funky, and easily mistaken for an actual product of ’90s vintage—that marked MK’s return to dance music, followed by still more remixes (Duke Dumont, Sam Smith, Clean Bandit, and even Nile Rodgers got the MK treatment) and jubilant throwback anthems like 2016’s “Piece of Me” and 2017’s “17.” In the new material, MK gave classic piano house a state-of-the-art update, yielding a sleek, punchy sound akin to future house.

Hailing from Northwest London, Ian Greenidge (aka Donae’o) grew up listening to rap, Afrobeat, and Caribbean music, and had a fondness for the likes of 2Pac, Notorious B.I.G., and D’Angelo instilled a desire to emulate his idols. Donae’o released his first single, Falling, in 2002, a mix of U.K. garage, R&B, and hip-hop; the single was followed by the release My Philosophy (Bounce). Over the next few years, Donae’o released a mix of EPs and singles including Colours, Change, and Devil in a Blue Dress. 2009 saw him appear alongside Lethal Bizzle on the track Go Hard, while also inking a deal with My-Ish Records. Donae’o’s debut album, Party Hard, appeared that year along with the single Watching Her Move. Releases from Donae’o slowed over the next few years, yet he kept working, appearing on tracks by the likes of Shy FX, Mike Delinquent, and Foreign Beggars. 2011 saw the release of the free album Indigo Child as well as the singles Big Ben and Move to Da Gyal Dem. Donae’o’s third album, The Forest of Zephron, appeared a couple of years later in 2013, and opted for a funkier house direction than his previous material. With a renewed vigor, more releases from Donae’o followed, with singles such as Mami No Like, What Is Love, and My Circle, along with a remix version featuring Wiley and Ghetts. Donae’o also continued with collaborations, appearing on the U.K. charting single Lock Doh by Giggs at the end of 2016.

English twin sisters Catherine and Lizzy Ward Thomas made chart history when their second album, Cartwheels, became the first country record by a British act ever to top the U.K. album chart, beating the long-established Jamie T to the top spot. Born in 1994 and brought up on a farm in rural Hampshire, the girls attended a local convent school and were turned on to country music as teenagers when a friend played them the Dixie Chicks. Both talented singers and instrumentalists, they started writing together while in the sixth form, bringing a uniquely British perspective to the genre.

 

 

When one of their teachers, who had once been a backup singer in Nashville, forwarded their demos to some old contacts, the sisters were invited to record their debut album there. Released in 2014 and entitled From Where We Stand, it had a fairly traditional sound that showcased their beautiful close-harmony vocals. Relentlessly championed by easy listening tastemaker station BBC Radio 2, the album peaked at number 41 in the U.K. album chart, selling 25,000 copies. The sisters toured heavily in its support, steadily increasing their fan base by word of mouth.

 

 

In 2016 they signed to Sony for the release of their second album, Cartwheels. While parts of the album, particularly the gorgeous title track, stayed true to the traditionalist sound of their debut, it often strayed significantly from “pure” country; some tracks bore the stamp of Fleetwood Mac’s country-rock-influenced Rumours, while others were just contemporary pop/rock. The girls’ songwriting knack was undiminished, however, and the British public voted with their wallets, sending the album to number one and officially making Ward Thomas the most successful British country act ever.

Last month, CHVRCHES released a new song ‘Out Of My Head’, featuring acclaimed Japanese electro pop group Wednesday Campanella. The track is the band’s first new material since the release of the album and is accompanied by a stunning video created by director Junichi Yamamoto (Pop Team Epic, Batman Ninja) and art director Yoshiki Imazu (Ringing City, Fluffiction).
