Jay Miners – Something Alive

Jay Miners is a singer, songwriter and composer with indie/folk/pop sounds. Born and raised in New York, she grew up playing classical piano and has written wide range of songs, including pop melodies and lyrics, instrumentals, and jazz pieces. She is influenced by her parents’ CD collection of the greats (Simon & Garfunkel, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell) in her early introductions to music, and later inspired by folk/pop singer songwriters like Sara Bareilles, Vienna Teng, and Elizabeth & The Catapult.

In December 2016, she dropped her debut EP “This Is How You Fight,” which is a work of songs reflecting observations on fading friendships and her love/hate relationship with NYC. Her new single “These Songs Have New Meaning” was released on Feb 26, 2018.

Currently, Jay is working on new music and playing shows in the NYC area.

It’s Not Records

Tell us your real names, country of birth and childhood experience.

Born and raised in New York, and I grew up playing classical piano. I started writing songs when I was about fourteen, and really loved it as a way of expressing myself. Been doing it ever since!

.

Tell us your academic qualification.

Never studied music in school, but I’m a classically trained pianist.

.

Elaborate on your music career, band name, experience and skills.

I started writing songs when I was a kid, but really took music seriously after college. That’s when I played open mics, shows, and decided I wanted to send the songs that I write out there and not keep it to myself. My name actually comes from a nickname my friends used to call me in high school. It was a play off my real name “Jasmine.” I always thought cool artists had stage names when I was a kid, and I guess it kind of stuck with me. I’ll deem it as symbolic.

Tell us your genre and idea behind your music video/song.

I think my music is a mix of genres, but have been labelling it folk/pop or chamber folk – sometimes country or jazz filters through. My song “Something Alive” is loosely based on a book I’m working on, which is inspired by my relationship with my background and my identity as an Asian American. It’s very much reflecting a journey of “finding yourself”, which can be sometimes hard when you have ties to both the American and the Asian parts of yourself. I wanted the music video to portray that story too. I was really honoured to have worked with Erik Lu from Descendant Films and this mega team at Maestro Filmworks – many of whom are Asian American filmmakers – as well as an Asian cast, to help tell this narrative.

Tell us how to run a record label based on your experience as an artist.

I’d want a record label to be transparent, to understand an artist’s music and what she wants to say, and work with her together to grow and build a career in the industry.

Tell us how you are promoting your music.

Social media, reaching out to Spotify playlists, press people, radio stations – just sending my stuff as much as I can out there.

.

.

.

State the names of other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director.

Jerry Jean produced my new EP (due 2019), music video director is the amazing Erik Lu of Descendant Films Crew/producers are from Maestro Filmworks headquartered in Philadelphia.

.

Tell us other activities you are pursuing apart from music.

Baking has become a new favourite hobby! Other than that, I just spend time with my family when I get downtime.

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music business, your experience and your future goal.

I’ve been pursuing music seriously for about two years. While I’ve always been writing songs, I started sharing them through an EP and on stage in 2016. Since then, I’ve been really going for every opportunity that comes my way, some that I’ve created myself and others I was lucky enough to come across. My goal for the next few years is to release this EP, connect with listeners and other artists, and hopefully play a tour.

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you unique from others.

The kind of music I’m always aiming to make is one that connects with you, because that’s the stuff that I really like. Music with emotional lyrics and interesting melodies and is saying something poignant. I don’t know if I always achieve that, but that’s what I hope makes my songs unique.
