Ghost Caravan – Damn You

Ghost Caravan is a group of collaborators lead by Shaina Silver-Baird. Her “ghosts” are what inform the music that she writes. Whether they are the ghosts of specific people, the ghosts of past loves or the ghosts of experience, this caravan of ghosts is the origin of her songs. “My music is still about dark places, but I focus on finding the light, the moment when you realize your own strength and ability to move forward. I want to be proud to share my songs with young women. There are so many voices in the world telling women how to think and feel about themselves. I want to be the voice that celebrates women. I want to empower and uplift people.” On her recently released record T.O. Confidential, Shaina Silver-Baird collaborated with members of the Weeknd, Grand Analog, Hill Kourkoutis of the Launch, Martha and the Muffins, the Four On The Floor String Quartet and many others. “There were so many amazing artists who collaborated on this project. It felt like a whole village came together to make this record and I’m so grateful to that community. I love creating music with other people. The end result is so much better because of the many points of view, different opinions and experiences that are woven into each song.” The music itself is orchestral soultronica. The Ghost Caravan live show mixes electronic elements with live instruments creating a sound that is cinematic and invigorating. “I want to continue to push in the direction of personal/poetic lyrics coupled with grand, dramatic tracks. I want to develop the soulful core along with the orchestral element. It’s such an exciting sound – very contemporary and yet derived from something deeper and older. I love how celebratory it is. It’s as if we get to see the world through glasses that make the colours a bit more vibrant and the moments a bit more joyous. And getting to play these songs live with an all-female band is an exciting, powerful experience. Plus, it’s just so damn fun!”

Tell us your real names, country of birth and childhood experience.

My real name is Shaina Silver-Baird and I was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I grew up on a steady diet of jazz, soul and folk music and my parents taught and performed traditional Balkan folk dance, so I was always around dance, music, art and unusual sounds and rhythms. I began singing at my Bat Mitzvah because my coach was also a professional singer and I imitated her technique. She encouraged my parents to get me lessons and so it all began. I started doing musical theatre as a teenager which led me to get a BFA in Theatre performance from York University. While I was there I dated a composer and watching him work I realised… wow I think I can write music too. I wrote my first song and haven’t stopped since.

Tell us your genre and idea behind your music video/song.

The genre is orchestral, electronic soul. We mix soulful melodies and lyrics with elements of electronic pop and orchestral instruments with a focus on strings. With the video we wanted to capture the song’s cheeky sense of abandon and fun in an organic way while keeping our female musicians as the centre focus. By creating a documentary style environment, we allowed for an honest image of both Shaina’s and Odario’s (guest performer) personalities to shine through. This behind-the-scenes look really captured the energy that “Damn You” inspires; the dance party you see in the video was exactly what we experienced on the day – it was extraordinary and wonderful to capture the atmosphere of the band, the crowd and the song all at once.

Explain the story behind the song.

With “Damn You” I set out to write a deep, sad and heartfelt love ballad and failed miserably. My real life relationship was going too well for that and I was stuck in writer’s block. So instead I wrote about my own situation. “Damn You” is about being in love with someone who knows you too well and makes you too happy to let you stew, self-sabotage or write a sad song.

Tell us what makes you unique from others.

When I started the project I was so focused on being dark, showing my heartbreak and pain in order to be a “real artist.” But, I started to realize we don’t actually need more of that in the world. We need to be uplifted. We need to be able to access our murky depths, but we don’t need to stew in them. I want to empower people. I want to make them dance and make them smile. So my music is still about those dark places, but I focus on finding the light in them and celebrating the magic in the world. I’m focused not on the moment of despair, but the moment right after, the realization of your own strength and beauty and ability to move forward. Loving when it is hard… that’s heroic. That’s what I want to represent in my music. Ghost Caravan is the music you turn up with girlfriends before a night on the town, the music you make love to, the music for the highs and lows of life. I especially want to be proud to share any of my songs with a young woman or girl. I want every message to be one I want them to hear. There are so many voices in the world telling women how they should think and feel about themselves. I want the voice I’m putting out there to celebrate women and lift them up. Ghost Caravan songs are an explosion of celebration: of the feminine, of joy, of strength.
