Swizz Beatz + Lil Wayne – Pistol On My Side (P.O.M.S)

Some 20 years deep in the music industry, Bronx-bred producer and rapper Swizz Beatz is still able to coax groundbreaking performances out of seasoned MCs like Nas, Pusha T, and Lil Wayne—artists who have long cemented their individual legacies as innovators. Though there are guests on every track, Swizz’s second album, Poison, is less a compilation of assorted collaborations than a collection of inspired performances united under a singular vision, each one somehow living up to the brilliance of the last. The recent Harvard Business School graduate tells Apple Music his methods for getting the most out of his collaborators in the studio — and how they happen to double as MBA-caliber, Fast Company-approved leadership tenets…

More!

Swizz Beatz was born Kasseem Dean in the Bronx borough of New York City. He relocated to Atlanta as a teenager, where he started to DJ parties. When his relatives became involved with the Ruff Ryders label, he began to produce tracks at the tender age of 16. Forgoing the practice of using samples, he used real instruments whenever possible and tried to accentuate the performance aspect of his music. He produced countless rap and R&B acts, from DMX to Eve, but he never really got much credit for his work. It wasn’t until his first solo album, 2002’s G.H.E.T.T.O. Stories that he started to get notices for his production style and interesting ideas. The next five years would find him landing hit after hit – including Cassidy’s “Hotel”, T.I.’s “Bring ‘Em Out,” and Beyoncé’s “Check on It” – while becoming more in demand with each production. In 2007 he released the solo album One Man Band, which debuted at number seven on the U.S. Billboard 200 charts. More production hits followed – Jay-Z’s “On to the Next One,” Chris Brown’s “I Can Transform Ya,” and Drake’s “Fancy” being three of the biggest – while 2010 found him becoming a household name as tabloids and gossip sites scrambled for pictures of his wedding to R&B superstar Alicia Keys. In 2012, acknowledging the changing music industry, the producer announced that as a recording artist, he was only interested in releasing single tracks instead of albums. That same year his track “Everyday Birthday” with Chris Brown and Ludacris began this series of singles, or as Swizz dubbed them, “memorable moments.”

International superstars MAJOR LAZER – the collaborative project of Diplo, Walshy Fire and Jillionaire –  release the official video for their brand new single ‘Blow That Smoke’ featuring Swedish pop sensation Tove Lo, out now via Because Music/Mad Decent. Conceptualized by Tove Lo, the video was directed by DAD (Camila Cabello, Gallant, Alina Baraz), the director duo of Grant Spanier and Corey C. Waters.

“From the beginning we pitched the project as a story of imagination, escape, inclusivity, music and mischief,” says DAD of the video. “The original concept came from Tove Lo and we brought it to life with both artists’ (super creative) teams. It’s really refreshing to work with artists that really care about stories and visuals and are willing to work hard to bring them to life. We were so impressed with Tove Lo’s commitment to the creative—dance rehearsals, multiple shooting days, going underwater for the shot—she and Major Lazer both brought a ton of passion to the project. We hope you enjoy our colorful escape through the closet.”

Combining sun-drenched West African guitars with the band’s trademark massive hooks, the track is a blissful slice of Afropop guaranteed to follow ‘Cold Water’, ‘Lean On’ and ‘Know No Better’ as the band’s next big anthem. Meanwhile, Tove Lo is one of the most prolific artists to emerge from Scandinavia in recent years, having accrued over a billion Spotify streams and featured on tracks for the likes of Charli XCX and Coldplay.

It’s been a whirlwind few years for the band that has seen them cover the likes of NME, The Guardian and Mixmag, headline major festivals across the country such as Lovebox, Bestival and the Other Stage at Glastonbury (where they played to over 75,000 eager fans) and release countless platinum singles.

Never keen to rest on their laurels, the band have grown; have to become one of the world’s few truly global live acts. Truly embodying the spirit of global pop, the band have recently finished a tour of Africa, including dates in South Africa, Malawi, Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda while also partnering with VETPAW (Veterans Empowered to Protect Africa Wildlife) to combat poaching in South Africa and beyond. With recent dates everywhere from Las Vegas to Haiti… well as landmark, historic shows in Pakistan and Cuba (where the band played to over 400,000 fans), the band have continued to push boundaries in bringing the Major Lazer sound and mission – to make the world smaller by making the party bigger- across the world.

Daniel Champagne – Satellite City

One reviewer recently wrote – ‘Daniel Champagne exudes a natural ease on stage, as he sings poignant lyrics and beautifully crafted melodies that invariably whisk the heart up with grand romanticism.

Coupled with an exhilarating guitar talent that transcends mere acoustic playing to replicate a whole band, Champagne is just magical’ – (themusic.com.au).

Daniel began writing songs at 12, training classically throughout his teens and performing solo wherever he could, honing his craft and developing what would become the dynamite live show that he is renowned for today. At 18 he left school and began traversing North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, New Zealand and of course, his homeland Australia playing festivals at Vancouver and Mariposa Folk, Belgium’s Labadoux Festival and Australia’s Woodford, Falls Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival and the legendary Byron Bay Bluesfest. As well as touring and sharing stages with the likes of Lucinda Williams, Judy Collins, INXS, John Butler, KT Tunstall and Ani DiFranco, Jake Shimabukuro, Rodrigo Y Gabriela – all of this while writing, producing and independently releasing more albums…

Growing up my Mum had a major impact on my musical taste and introduced me to a whole spectrum, everything from Patsy Kline and Dionne Warwick to eighties pop bands like The Bangles, UB40 and Madonna. (I LOVED ‘80’s Kylie as well so I blame my mother). I would spend hours making up routines and willingly sing to Mum, Dad, Nan, Granddad whoever would listen. My brother tried to influence me with Nirvana, Green Day, Blur and The Beatles and my Dad fought his corner for David Bowie and The Who. Altogether, it was a pretty eclectic household Madonna was my absolute idol so it was natural that the first song I ever sang at a school talent show was called Promise to Try. I was absolutely petrified but I had the most amazing feeling once I got through the song. I took to singing good ‘warblers’ like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston as I got older and my voice (slightly) matured. At the time it was just a bit of fun, but when I was asked to fill in for someone at the Duke of Edinburgh awards at the Barbican, I started to believe that I could do this professionally Not long after this, I got spotted at a charity event by a ‘60’s band that was looking for a female singer. It was a great opportunity and I did the pub circuit for a couple of years when I was sixteen. I put it on hold when I went to university but it wasn’t long before opportunity came knocking at my door in the form of Darren (McKiernan, my producer and school friend), who called me to say that he had set up a studio. We started recording various tracks and suddenly realised we had loads of songs. Eighteen months later, here we were with an album…

Justin Kane – Our Flag Is For The Fallen

As we approach Veterans Day of 2018, we the people have had the opportunity to vote and be a part of what makes this nation great.  But this ability was not granted by the people in political power, but by those whom have served, fought and died for our great nation. With the blood, sweat and tears of our members of the armed forces, our country is able to enjoy the freedoms that we experience daily. The constant reminder we have of those sacrifices is the flag we call “Old Glory.” She waves high above churches, buildings, porches, and front yards of the people that are proud to call this country home. Let’s remember and give thanks to all that have served our great nation by standing for the anthem and showing the respect that flag so rightly deserves.

“Our Flag Is For The Fallen” is a song that gives thanks to those that deserve it.  Share your love for our veterans, police, firefighters, EMT’s and our armed forces and thank them for all that they do.

This song is my effort to support the men and women that served and still serve today. I know first-hand the sacrifices that are made. They had my back, and though I am no longer in the service, I want them to know that I’ve got theirs. Armed with a guitar and a microphone, I will do all that I can to ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten.

I hope the song will remind people that our nation’s flag is a symbol, not only of a great and free nation, but also of all those who have given much … and of all those who, whenever needed throughout our nation, are the first to answer the call.

                                                                                                                                  – Justin Kane

With the release of “Our Flag Is For The Fallen,” Justin Kane looks forward to further sharing his message with his growing fan base through his upcoming performances and getting to know the good people…
