Greye – What If I

Greye is made up of vocalist Hannah Summer, guitarist Jett Wolfe, bassist Joshua Reid, and drummer Ray Grimard. Since their inception in 2012, they have rocked crowds both locally and nationwide. They released their first album , “Providence,” in 2014, and since then have gone on to release four more full-length LP’s, “The Tube” in 2015, “The Worrier” in 2016, “Windows” in 2017,  and their latest release “Under The Weather.”  With influences like John Butler Trio, Yes, Kansas, Ambrosia, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and even video games, there is something in their ever-growing discography for everyone to enjoy, no matter your musical preference.

Their rigorous work ethic and busy schedule have come to define them as musicians, with gigs all over the east coast in addition to many countless hours spent in the studio, they still manage to fit in multiple practices each week. They have performed on the coveted stages of the Key West Song Writer’s Festival, Awendaw Green’s Barn Jam in Awendaw, SC, The End in Nashville, TN, The Dock in Ithaca, NY, Freebird Live in Jacksonville, FL, The Middle East in Cambridge, MA, The Hungry Tiger in Manchester, CT, Stanley’s Pub in Cincinnati, OH and countless others.  Having recently returned home from their Summer Tour of the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic United States, they are now getting to work on producing their sixth record, as well as putting together a tour for 2019.

Tell us how you write the lyrics to your song.

Each song that GREYE writes is really broken down into two specific processes. The first process involves the principle musicians; drums, guitar and bass, jamming a bit and putting parts together to form a musical entity. Once this process is completed, the musicians play the song for the band’s lyricist Hannah Summer who breathes life into the song. These lyrics could be from past experiences, travels the band has made, relationships.

.

.

Discuss your life outside the music world.

Regular people doing regular things, however, regular if that involves playing over a 100 shows each year, rehearsing at least twice a week, writing new songs, recording them and constantly preparing to travel.

.

.

.

Discuss your music career.

Our music career is comprised of rehearsal, performances, travels, writing, recording, rinse and repeat. Oh ya and we have a lot of fun doing it.:)

.

.

.

Elaborate on your artist’s name.

The name GREYE is synonymous with not being black or white…hard or soft, rock or pop. It is all of these things. All the colours, all the music…the world is not Black or White but many shades of GREYE.

.

.

.

Tell us your source of inspiration.

There are many sources of inspiration that all contribute to GREYE songs. Relationships hits and misses, family scenarios (always interesting), life on the road, places we visit as a band, or simple things like rolling through a large industrial city in the bus at sunrise with all of the cogs in motion. All of these and so much more contribute their part.

.

.

.

Tell us your impression on dealing with paparazzi.

So far all people have been very polite and considerate. We must not be famous enough yet…people are still kind.

.

.

.

Elaborate on the recording of this song.

“What if I” and the other 9 songs on “Under the Weather” were recorded at FAME Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL. We wanted to record at a place where we would get a great recording, but also a place that was steeped in musical history. The vibe that is that place can be heard in every track on this record. The songs for the album were recorded essentially live with very few overdubs. What you hear is really the band all working together.

.

.

.

Tell us your future projects.

With any luck we will be promoting our 6th record next time this year.

.

.

.

List the names of those that have supported you so far.

There have been so many people that have helped us. In an effort to name people we are fearful of missing (and ultimately hurting) someone.

.

.

.

Tell us your point of view on vocal tuning.

If you can’t sing it practice if you still can sing it…DON’T! Not one note in the past 5 full length records produced by GREYE has ANY vocal tuning.

.

.

.

Tell us your opinion on categorizing music into genres and sub-genres.

We miss the days when music was just music. Given that our music draws from literally 5 decades of rock, soul, and progressive music…we are constantly being placed in to one sub category or another. It is too bad that listeners have become so conditioned to being exposed to specific genres or sub-genres. They miss the forest for the sake of the literal musical trees.

.

.

.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

“What If I” is the title of the song. It asks a series of questions to a fictitious subject…
