Jeneral + Kelly Brouhaha – Nice
Jeneral ‘Jral’ is an emerging solo Hip Hop artist originating from the hills region of Adelaide, South Australia. The well rounded wordsmith has a smooth distinctive style akin to hard hitting Zach De La Rocha funk, with slow flow Sunday rhyming and a touch of no bullshit, heart on the sleeve reality raps. These qualities have been refined over time by diverse experiences, being humbled by people from all walks of life, creating a deep introspection that elicits a profound, personal and raw flow. Jral’s passion for writing song lyrics was driven by the inspiration of a primary school teacher who would encourage him to enter his writing in short story competitions. This teacher believed in Jral’s capabilities as a writer so much, she would take him out of usual class activities and sit him on his own in another room so he was able to focus on writing; where he would come up with various ideas, poems and narratives which were then crafted into rhyming short stories with the assistance of his teacher. After finishing high school Jral became interested in music production and purchased his first drum machine which he used to write beats that he would then rhyme over. It was from that moment his love for Hip Hop was born and he knew he had found his calling. Jral went on to form the group Co4Sure with two of his best mates. Co4Sure had some good traction over their 6 years, firstly with a track they uploaded to Triple J Unearthed which received airplay on Triple J and then playing various support slots around Adelaide with the lies of Bliss n Esso and Terra Firma. Co4Sure launched their EP with Bias B, Funkoars and Mystro.
At the age of 23 Jral visited India on a holiday and caught the travel bug. When he returned home he kept working with the Co4Sure project however the intrigue of other cultures and experiences was calling his name and he knew it had to be answered. Before he went travelling, Jral thought it was a good idea to expand on his production skills so he applied for an Artist Development Grant with Arts South Australia. Jral was fortunate to be awarded with the Grant which he used to develop his skills through studying music production with one of Adelaide’s well renowned Hip Hop producers Simplex. Jral set off on his travelling journey after completing his study, spending the next ten years jet setting around the world. He continued to produce music, write lyrics, record songs and hone his skills, building the knowledge that a good song isn’t just based on lyrical content but is equally attentive to composition, arrangement and production. However since he never stayed in one location very long it was difficult to build the working relationships needed to produce material at a professional level for release. He knew it was finally time to take his music seriously and do it to a standard that was ready for release on a larger scale. Taking influences from artists such as Gang Starr, Big L, Rage Against The Machine, The Beantnuts, Drapht, Talib Kwelli, Hilltop Hoods, Eminem, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Seth Sentry; Jral has spent the past two years writing and recording multiple tracks and has now narrowed them down to just 5 songs that he believes represents his best work. During this time, Jral has built his network and worked with two of Adelaide’s best known producers; Eslev and Debate who have written tracks for Hilltop Hoods and Bad Cop who wrote Tkay Midza’s break out singles ‘Brontosaurus’ and ‘Handle My Ego’. Jral has also collaborated with one of Adelaide’s rising singer songwriters Kelly Brauhaha. Jral is confident that it’s now his time to break out on a broader scale and finally release the Jeneral project for the world to hear. The elements are there, the tracks are finalised and Jeneral is ready to hit the ground running with whatever opportunities may be thrown his way as a result of the releases.
“Music is about the freedom to express your experiences and accepting what that ends up being, without judging your creativity” – Jeneral
Introducing solo Hip Hop artist Jeneral ‘Jral’ hailing from the hills region of Adelaide, who today bursts onto the scene with his debut single ‘Nice’. ‘Nice’ is a high energy, in your face track about the battle that happens when we go out to achieve our dreams but another part of us just wants to do what’s easy and comfortable – the hook captures that fleeting thought; wouldn’t it be nice if we just got everything we wanted without having to work for it…
The track features Adelaide’s rising singer songwriter Kelly Brauhaha and was produced by Mario Spate ‘Badcop’ who has impressive achievements to his name such as co-writer and producer credits for Tkay Midza’s break-out singles ‘Brontosaurus’ and ‘Handle My Ego’; plus ARIA Award winning artists Megan Washington and Montaigne.
