State your reason for choosing music as a career.

Well, we’re not having a music career yet. What makes us carry on with music is that we enjoy the process of creating and shaping something from the beginning to the very end. It all starts with silence and at the end you have a master “tape” that has made its way through countless steps of musical and technical work. That’s somehow fascinating.

.

.

.

Tell us how you write the lyrics to your song.

We are producers in the first place, so we always start with melodies, sounds, beats and create a song based on these elements. The lyrics have to complement the overall mood of the track and need to fit in rhythmically as well.

.

.

.

Discuss your life outside the music world.

We’re both having our day jobs.

.

.

.

Discuss your music career.

We’re just starting out with the project so there still is a long way to go.

U Know Y is a new project founded by a team of producers from Germany. Having worked as sound designers, engineers and DJs in the past they are now taking the plunge to enter the music market and find their trace in the world of modern electro and pop music.

Their new single “Relight” is meant to be a reminiscence to classic electro pop music featuring synth sounds and samples well known from 80s and 90s songs. Built around a catchy lead vocal, the song moves from dark and sparsely instrumented verse parts to richer and more uplifting sounding choruses, all dropping into a classic old school break-beat at the end.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your artist’s name.

The project needs a name – and the moment we came up with it, it sounded cool to us…

.

.

.

Tell us your source of inspiration.

Our approach might be quite technical – we often get inspired by the instruments in our studio creating a certain type of sound. A digital 80s bass at the beginning will involve a different sound than starting with piano chords.

.

.

.

Elaborate on the recording of this song.

The song was recorded in our home studio using mostly early 90s hardware synths.

.

.

.

Tell us your point of view on vocal tuning.

We are really not into auto tune songs, but doing pitch correction with taste has just become a regular procedure in nowadays’ music production. And as our singers are thousands of kilometers away, we simply cannot ask for “just one more take” on demand – if it’s not clean we will need to work with it anyway.

.

.

.

Tell us your thought on quality and quantity for the release of songs.

Too many songs out there! And now we have even started to add to this huge number…

.

.

.

Tell us your viewpoint on comparing music career to non-music career.

Non-music career is OK as well.

.

.

.

Tell us your opinion on categorizing music into genres and sub-genres.

Sticking to genres can help saving songs from being random. From a producer’s perspective it sometimes can be more challenging to stay within the boundaries of your genre than just doing anything that sounds good. This can help to sharpen your idea of what your music really is about.

Dead Defined – Unwholey

Dead Defined thrives to stand at a crossroads between anthemic hard rock infectiousness and thought-provoking charged industrial pop.

Think a cross between the mind-numbing musical malevolence of American super group Filter and Alice in Chains’ timeless irresistibility, and you’re halfway there.

Dead Defined is the project of singer/songwriter Craig Ewan (ex-Shadows in Red) and earlier driving force of Toronto hard rock band Waveline, Dead Defined’s sophomore single Unwholey is metallic industrial rock evolution in its simplest form.

More!

Industrial rock ain’t dead!

“Dead Defined are putting a modern spin on the genre, and evoking the spirit of Stabbing Westward, Depeche Mode and Econoline Crush.”

Soundsphere Magazine – Hull, United Kingdom (England)

“Unwholey” is the sophomore single release for the Industrial/Pop/Rock group ‘Dead Defined’.

Singer/Songwriter Craig Ewan is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

‘Dead Defined’ and their debut single ‘I Fear Nothing’ (released March.20.2018) has found radio play in Canada, USA, Germany, Australia, Spain, United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

The independent rock band’s debut single reached over 50,000 views via YouTube in just nine months and thousands of streams via Spotify, SoundCloud, Google Play and Apple Music.

“Unwholey” is a play on words and is best illustrated through the chorus of the song.

“Hollow, I’ve never felt so alone, but now you’re here, I’m so lonely in here, I’m so lonely in here, I’m Unwholey, I’m so lonely in here.”

Unexpected passing of Craig’s dad on May 21.2018 led to set pen on paper for this song.
