Tell us your opinion on creativity and originality.

I think the band concept we have was born from creativity and originality.  We have many studio musicians that contributed to the project as well as fantastic art.  Pauly M. Everett did all the artwork for Meant 2 Be and did an excellent job.  Dave Hamilton either wrote or co-wrote all eleven original tracks on the album.

.

.

.

Tell us the beginning of your passion for music.

Music has been a passion for everyone involved with the Happy Curmudgeons.  Dave Hamilton dreams most of the lyrics and sometimes melodies as well.  Music is life for us – spiritually, growth and healing.

.

.

.

Elaborate on how you make sure the quality of your sound is high.

Sound and clarity are the most important aspects of music.   So many bands get into smaller rooms and play too loud.   We are not against loud music, but it needs to fit the venue.

We had Nate Harasim (Dave Koz Band) and Mark Byerly (Bob Seger Band) produce Meant 2 Be.  Nate is a Grammy-nominated producer and Mark has worked with Santana, Justin Timberlake and Bob Seger.   We brought people into this project that has experience and we are delighted with the overall sound of Meant 2 Be.

.

.

.

Tell us how you get ideas to develop your songs.

Most of the songs that Dave Hamilton writes are from dreams.   Amy Dixon-Lavery just wrote her first song, 2nd Chances, which will be on the next album.  She writes from life experiences.   Jeff Warner gets inspiration from his musical influences and his time on the road.  Terry “Leffee” Sheehan and Jay “Tumbleweed” Burrs will be contributing on the second album as well.   Those guys are rooted in blues and reggae.

.

.

.

Describe your vocal ability.

Amy Dixon-Lavery is the main vocal talent in the band.  She is amazing and can sing with anyone.   Jeff Warner has a great range and can be heard on 3rd Coast, a song he co-wrote with Dave Hamilton.   Dave Hamilton is somewhere between Tom Petty and Bob Dylan.  He would be a good fill-in musician for the Traveling Wilburys.

.

.

.

Tell us how you develop the instrumentation for this song.

Dave Hamilton wrote Bar Hoppin and it started with the main chords on an acoustic guitar.   This is the only song from the album that the lyrics did not come from a dream.  Dave sat down and wrote the rhythm in two days.  He also plays the solo and fills on electric guitar.  Takaski Iio is on bass, Rick Beamon is on drums and Amy Dixon-Lavery did backing vocals on Bar Hoppin.

.

.

.

State five hit songs and name the artists.

Bob Dylan – Tangled Up In Blue,  The Beatles – A Day In The Life,  Grateful Dead – Touch Of Grey,  The Rolling Stones – Sympathy For The Devil and Led Zeppelin – Stairway To Heaven.

.

.

.

Tell us how you entertain audience during a live performance.

Stick to music and stay away from politics.  Get up in front on the audience and deliver your best performance no matter how many people are in front of you.  Make a tremendous first impression.   Be yourself and play from the soul.

.

.

.

List the name of artists that have a similar sound to yours.

Grateful Dead, Tom Petty, Credence Clearwater Revival, Avett Brothers.

.

.

.

Discuss how you think your music is impacting your fans.

We want to play music that inspires us first and foremost.  Our music needs to move us and if it does, we believe it will move other people as well.  3rd Coast has been a track that fans bring a personal adaptation to in many ways.   As an artist, it is great to get that feedback and hear people singing along with the lyrics at a show.

.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to sing.

Amy Dixon-Lavery is the gifted singer.  She was born with the ability to sing with perfect pitch.   Jeff Warner and Dave Hamilton bring their personalities into their vocals.

.

.

.

Discuss this song.

Bar Hoppin is an ode to college life. The song is about hitting the town with your friend on the weekend and spending it together.   It is a fun song of celebration and relaxation.

.

.

.

Discuss how you develop your melody.

The melody must make sense.  If I cannot hum the melody or Amy cannot sing it, the song will not move on to the next level.   The melody must be the foundation for the tune.

.

.

.

Share your press release and reviews with us.

Overall, the press reaction to Meant 2 Be has been positive.   Most critics have written about IDLE TIME.   We have been a regular featured artist on ReverbNation and were Number 1  for 11 of the past 12 months under the singer/songwriter category in the metro Detroit area.

.

.

.

Tell us how you master your songs after production.

Nate Harasim did the heavy lifting on the production for Meant 2 Be.  Nate and Mark Byerly mixed the tracks.   Dave and Nate would sit down and listen to a couple of version of each song and then pick…

.

.

.

Discuss how you get your songs to digital stores.

The Happy Curmudgeons work with CD Baby and AWAL for distribution.   Those distributors handle all the digital stores like iTunes.

.

.

.

Discuss how to generate income through music.

Generating revenue is the key to every musician or band being able to continue on a commercial basis.   It takes money to make money.   You must have money left over after production to get the music out into the right hands.   The music business is a lot of who you know.   You need solid music and very cool merchandise.

.

.

.

Tell us your piece of advice to a new artist.

Take your time and practice everything, so when you hit the studio – you are ready to go.  You do not want to waste studio time and cash.  You will need a budget for advertising when you have your finished project.   Sign up for ReverbNation, BandCamp, CD Baby, Symphonic Distribution and they can help you get your music to the people.

.

.

.

State your favourite radio station.

Everyone listens to everything from blues, rock, country, jazz  –  We love the Underground Garage, Spectrum,  Coffee House, Outlaw Country, Bluegrass, The Groove and Deep Tracks on SXM Radio.

.

.

.

Go into details on this song.

Bar Hoppin was written by Dave Hamilton when he lived in the Tampa area.  He spent a lot of time in Ybor City seeing shows and jumping from bar to bar.   Bar Hoppin is a song about grabbing your girlfriend on a Saturday, hitting the bars, listening to music, having fun and relaxing with that person on Sunday.  It is a song about fun and relaxing with someone that makes you happy.

Steel Standing TX is from Spicewood, a lakefront suburb of Austin, TX (Live music capital of the world).

.

.

.

Go into detail on why you decided to choose music as a career.

We all started studying music in school with band and choir etc.  All of us are passionate about music.  We were all surrounded and influenced by some of the greatest musicians who performed back in the early days of The Austin, TX music scene.  Musicians like Rocky Erickson, the Allman Brothers, Freddie King and Johnny Winter.

.

.

.

Our fans continuously tell us how much they enjoy our energy and that we do more than just play music, we give a live performance that is memorable.

.

.

.

Discuss the relevance of social networking to music.

Social media has become the lifeline for communicating music all over the world.  It allows us to reach people who in a way we couldn’t imagine possible in the span of our careers.

.

.

.

Tell us how you record your song.

The latest songs were recorded at the Congress House Recording Studio, one of Austin’s oldest established and iconic studios.

.

.

.

Tell us the story behind the song.

The story was written by David Houston, our drummer.  He says it was inspired by a visit to a friend’s house and a chance sighting of his elusive black cat named Oracle.  The cat strutted past like he was the king of the neighborhood.  He was the biggest, toughest cat around.

.

.

Tell us how long it takes to complete a song from the start.

Have you ever woken up at 3 a.m. and had a song in your head? You get up and write the words down then take it to the band and develop the melody. Some songs have been completed in a day others take more time to develop.

.

.

.

Go into detail on how you develop your lyrics and melody.

Some lyrics come from inspirational experiences and others from spontaneous reactions.  Sometimes a melody gets in your head first and you write the lyrics to match.

Music is a creative experience and it doesn’t often follow a set pattern.  It sometimes takes the collaboration of the entire band.

.

.

.

Discuss music in full details.

Music is the universal language.  If music is good, it will invoke an emotional response regardless of who you are or what circumstance you are in.

.

.

.

State your five favourite genres of music with reasons.

Blues: It’s the root of the American South.  It was extremely influential to modern music.

Rock: It was the heartbeat of young America.

Punk: It gives you the frenzied release of emotions.

Reggae: Very relaxing in some form yet in other forms was the political voice of an oppressed people.

Psychedelic: Just groovy!

.

.

.

Discuss your rehearsal.

Rehearsals are determined by the immediate need of the week.

We usually dedicate time to running the set list for an upcoming gig although we reserve special time to work through our entire catalog.  We schedule special work days for new original or cover tunes.

.

.

.

State your favorite musical instruments.

Our guitarist, Leo prefers his Jazz Master guitar and his Telecaster.  Acoustically, he uses a Taylor.

David’s leaning is to Gretch and DW drums for their unique sound. Acoustically, he uses a slap top Cajon combined with a bass Cajon.

Where Roger is proficient in the upright for acoustic, he prefers to rip it up on the Gibson Grabber.

Leslie uses her Di’Angelica acoustic and she enjoys playing percussion on the Dembe.

.

.

.

The minute we hit the stage, we pour our heart into it and give a performance that they will remember!  People tell us “you guys have so much fun!”  And we truly are!

.

.

.
