The last year has seen Nadia release a collaboration with Jamie Morrison (soul of Pop Morrison and drummer in Stereophonics), being tipped as one of This Feeling’s ‘Big in 2018’ artists, perform all around the UK and Spain, the Isle of Wight Festival and FIB (Benicassim festival).

Tell us your history.

I was brought up in Spain (half British half Spanish). I grew up listening to the likes of the Beatles, Queen and Abba. When I was 12 I started to teach myself how to play guitar and fell in love with music and shortly after I began to sing and write songs. I started to perform live aged 13 and have been doing so eagerly ever since. When I was 14 I entered a competition in Spain organized by EMI where I won the public prize and got to record some of my songs with renowned producer Nigel Walker. I kept on writing songs and performing live and aged 17 I released my first EP, produced by Nigel Walker. It had a great welcoming from the press and the public and when I finished my college studies and turned 18, I moved to London to study music and try to make a career in the industry.

 

Since arriving London, I started performing live anywhere and everywhere with my guitar. A while after; I found a band that would perform with me and started to play full band shows around the city. We performed around the UK, Spain and even in Ireland.

 

In 2018, we were tipped as one of the ‘Big in 2018’ bands by promoters This Feeling, coinciding with the release of ‘Going Down’. As well as that, last year we performed all around the UK and Spain including Isle of Wight festival, FIB (Benicassim festival) and support slots with Sophie and the Giants.

 

This year there’s a lot coming up! ‘Toxic’ just came out and we have a small UK tour coming up this Spring, so all in all, very excited for everything that’s coming!

I am an artist with a heartfelt and delicate voice surrounded by powerful and rocky guitars but that can also be very emotive. Indie rock songs with a pop core…

Indie rock / Pop rock – I like to say I write pop songs in an indie rock setup!

Tell us the story behind your song.

It is a song about illness and struggle, based on personal experience. The narrative embedded in the single describes the spiral of an illness taking hold and dealing with the uphill battle of getting to the root cause.

Tell us the problems you are facing as a musician.

Being a musician is hard, you have to dedicate all of your time, efforts and money into it and sometimes (most of the time! haha) it’s hard to balance it all, whilst living and paying rent in London, but if you love what you do and you have passion and a goal, those are just little things!

Discuss the recording and production of the song.

The song was recorded party in a studio in London and party in my bedroom! It was produced by Nigel Walker (former engineer at Air Studios with Sir George Martin and who’s worked with Paul McCartney, Elton John…) who produced my first EP. He came to London from Spain where he is based and although we’d bounced off demos and ideas, we sat in the room and worked out what was good and what wasn’t working in the track, we changed parts, keys, and certain parts of the arrangement and we went into the studio with it. Recorded everything live in the room and then overdubbed parts.

 

Being an independent artist is hard, especially if you are funding things yourself, and as budget wasn’t huge, we had limited studio time, which meant that I had to record the vocals at my house and work over the internet with Nigel to get the tracks finished!

Elaborate on your music career, experience andfuture goals.

I’ve been performing since I was a teenager, that’s all I’ve wanted to do. I’ve been learning my craft, my performing live and writing songs, going onto radio sessions, etc.

 

I was also awarded a scholarship to do a Summer course for vocalists at Stanford University in San Francisco, and I have a degree in Music Performance and Recording, but the most valuable experience has been working with other people in the industry: producers, songwriters, musicians, and by going out and performing, developing my career in a DIY way where I book my shows, do my PR, arrange interviews, record songs, write, etc.

 

My goals for the future are to keep on developing my skills as a performer, musician and songwriter and to further my career into the next levels…and go all the way to the top! 😀

It depends on the song, but it goes from personal experience, things that have happened to me or about the way I am feeling in that particular moment, about things/stories I see or have heard and I also like to write about universal topics, the way I feel about certain things or things that anyone can relate to.

Brief us the top-secret behind making a hit song.

I think it’s connecting with the audience. It has to have a great hook but that people can also relate to in terms of topics. A song that can be timeless and that people can grow with. But then again…‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ was a hit song and it’s incredibly intricate and too long for radio, so I don’t really know if there’s a formula!

If you love it, do it and graft for it. Put the hard work in and even if it seems that things are not happening or happening slowly… So keep on going!

I usually write the music and the lyrics together, although I do have some songs where I have finished the chords and the melody and I work on the lyrics separately.

 

I have also co-written with other people and everyone’s method is different.

 

When I’m recording vocals in the studio or at home, I need some sort of intimacy and if at all possible, I like dim lighting. It helps me get more into it for some reason!

London based artist Nadia is set to release her new single ‘Toxic’, with Impact on March 22nd, 2019 via AWAL with the track available via to stream and download from 25th January, 2019.

 

Following on from her last release ‘Going Down’ earlier this year, ‘Toxic’ has been produced and mixed by Nigel Walker from Air Studios. Nadia will draw you in with her exquisite vocals and hold you there with her bold ominous indie rock guitar style.

 

The genre chameleon has perfected the art of blending indie rock, with timeless pop, then adding her own flavour with her half-Spanish half-British heritage and heartfelt narratives, you will be in a trance.

 

At just 14 Nadia’s endeavour into the music scene started with being offered a development deal from EMI Spain after winning their public prize competition. Through this opportunity she began working with Nigel Walker (Air Studios London) releasing her first EP at 17. Since then Nadia has been non-stop collaborating with producers and artists such as Danny Schogger (Sam Brown’s Producer) who produced her singles ‘No. 24’ and ‘Flip The Coin’ and Jamie Morrison ( Drummer of Stereophonics).

 

She’s also impressed the likes of Mark Gardiner (RIDE) who offered to produce and collaborate with her on future releases.

 

2018 was a successful year for Nadia, being tipped as ‘This Feeling’s Big In 2018’ alongside artist JUDAS and playing Isle of Wight Festival .

 

Nadia has also performed at FIB (Benicassim Festival) last summer 2018. 2019 started with a world first play from John Kennedy, a This Feeling Tour and just recently Nadia was invited by Alan McGhee to play his new Creation 23 Label Showcase at The Social.

 

Of ‘Toxic’ Nadia commented, “It is a song about illness and struggle, based on personal experience of being unknowingly affected by black mold. The narrative embedded in the single describes the spiral of the mysterious illness taking hold and dealing with the uphill battle of getting to the root cause; that was continuously being diagnosed as stress.”

Being an independent artist, you have to do lots of other stuff and work to be able to sustain yourself, especially if you live in a city like London, so sometimes it’s hard to balance it all, and most of the time I have a bazillion things to do and don’t have time to maybe go out with my friends or do other things as much as I would, but I love what I do, so I don’t even think of those things!

Tell us your real names, country of birth and childhood experience.

Not many people know this, but our real names are Slippers McDonalds, Santa Payne, and Thomas Kraft-Foosball. We were all born on the same boxcar running through Fayetteville, AK. Weirdly enough, we’re not related though. One of those weird coincidences I guess. We all grew up down the street from each other, but actually didn’t meet until September 2016.

Elaborate on your music career, band name, experience and skills.

Craig found a guitar in his dad’s closet at age 6 and took it out. When his father found him, he scolded Craig and told him never to look in his closet again and shooed him out of the room. Curiosity got the better of him, and every night from then on Craig would sneak into his father’s room and teach himself guitar. Thank goodness his parents were heavy sleepers. Thus began the musical career of Craig Broomba.

 

Nick was walking through the woods in Baltimore at age 14 and a bass guitar fell from a tree and hit him on the head. Thinking nothing of it initially, he continued his walk. A mile or so on, he saw the same bass guitar lying on the path in front of him. Same serial number and everything… at this point, he decided to turn back out of the woods. As soon as he turned around, the bass guitar was already in front him again. Sprinting now, he reached his car at the park entrance. The bass was in his passenger seat! Nick had no choice but to learn bass.

 

Oliver came out of the womb holding drumsticks. Growing up, his parents told him that this was perfectly normal, and that in fact an astonishing 24% of all babies are born with Stick Hand Syndrome. While not a curable condition, it is certainly treatable, and his responsible parents started him on drum therapy as soon as doctors deemed it safe. As of today, Oliver is on a strict regimen of 13 hours of drum practice a day, with hopes of cutting down to 3 hours over the next ten years.

 

We three friends came together to form Filmspeed. We chose the name after our favorite Keanu Reeves movie.

 

Skills-wise, Craig is a 4 time Regional Bingo Champion, Nick can yodel like nobody’s business, and Oliver can tie cherry stems in a knot with his tongue.

Tell us your genre and idea behind your music video and the song.

We are terrible with genres, so we just like to use the umbrella term of “rock n’ roll” and leave it at that. As for the music video and the song, we’re hoping they’re prime examples of that. The song is a jam we hope will get people riled up and ready to party. We actually had very little to do with the video, we hired our friends at Stage Twelve Productions to come up with a cooler idea than we ever could have on our own. Shout out to them for sure. We think it’s funny and poignant all in one, and we’re just happy we could provide the soundtrack.

We prefer carrier pigeons, but have yet to see any great returns from them unfortunately. So I guess in the meantime we stick to all the usual social media outlets: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter are all firing on all cylinders. Seriously, wait for our pigeons though.

The song is called “Bless My Soul” because we all know that moment when you see the most beautiful person in the world that can’t be anything other than proof of a higher power. That’s what the song is about.

Electric Tuxedo is a London-based production trio (Andrei, Cat, Horia), whose work has been described as ‘ice cream on a grilled chicken breast’ by Vice.com. Not unwarranted, might we add, as their gutsy culinary approach extends to their sound, which mixes not only musical styles (pop, EDM, hip-hop, rock), but also lyrical subjects (first thoughts after a break-up, visiting a shrink, plunging into a black hole; not necessarily in that order). The cherry on top, as it were, is their collaboration with guest singers or instrumentalists, making every song the recipe for a very quirky musical experience.

For ‘Please Stop’ – We came up with the chord progressions first, which we tend to do for every song. We wanted each section to have a distinct flavour, in line with the narrative of the lyrics, so the chords change throughout.

 

The melody also follows this idea, going from the more recitative delivery of the verses to an anthemic, soaring melody for the pre-choruses and choruses. Backing vocals enter progressively and become the backbone of the penultimate, acapella chorus.

The song was produced in-house by our production house, Radar Noise. Reaper was used as the DAW, with NI Battery and Massive doing the heavy lifting in terms of drums and synths respectively. Various samples were then added to create the modern-vintage 90s vibe (heavy side-chaining also helped!).

 

Shout out to FabFilter and Waves, whose plugins found their way onto most, if not all, chains in the mix.

 

The most fun we had was with the guitar solo, which is processed in such a way that most people think it’s a synth (we have a video coming out describing the process, so stay tuned!).

 

We also mastered the track, making sure the dynamics of the mix were retained, bringing it to market level in terms of width, depth, compression, and loudness.

‘Please Stop’ deals with the thoughts that go through someone’s mind in the first moments after a break-up. Very few of us are exempt from such episodes, and we end up asking ourselves how the relationship got to this point, what went wrong, and, ultimately, what to do next.

 

The song explores this all including the state of mind, using the energetic and anthemic music of the chorus to ultimately empower the listener.

 

Romanian singer Roxana’s powerful yet soulful vocals enhance this sense of empowerment and offer a hopeful undertone to a potentially devastating situation.

Elaborate on your music career.

We started Electric Tuxedo as a live band – the music we created at the very beginning was meant to be performed and only then recorded.

 

We live off the energy that the audience brings to our music. Our songs were first heard in the heart of London at venues such as the Garage, the Water Rats, the Crowndale. That’s how our first EP, Circus, came to be.

 

Our music was featured on BBC Introducing, Berlin ArtParasites, and Vice.com, and this gave us the impetus to keep releasing music and improving.

 

We’ve since taken a break from the live scene, and approached music-making from the other end, focusing on a more production-heavy sound that permits exploration of musical paths impossible to tread as a power-trio.

 

One of our strongest new features is the collaboration with other musicians, particularly singers, as heard on our latest single, ‘Please Stop’.

 

We’re currently working on new music, constantly looking for things that excite us, both musically and lyrically.

Brief us on how you are reaching fans with your music.

We interact with our fans mostly via social media, particularly through Facebook and Instagram. We like to bring them along backstage, and we often show them snippets from the production process and rehearsals.

 

And, of course, fans can listen to and download any of our songs from SoundCloud, iTunes, Bandcamp, or stream them on Spotify or YouTube.

Discuss your motive behind making music.

All three of us are fortunate enough to be on the same page when it comes to music-making, including our personal reasons for wanting to become musicians and songwriters in the first place.

 

We love music and the process of making it scratches more itches than we can describe.

 

There’s just something in a fat snare, lush synth, and sensuous vocal that you can’t get anywhere else. New-ageism aside, we became interested in music as a tool for self-discovery, improvement, and self-expression.

 

Music lets us deal with any life-problem head-on.

Discuss your lyrics and songwriting.

More often than not, we start with the music. Someone will come with an idea, we’ll record it, and then jam and brainstorm until a song surfaces. That proto-song then gets polished in the studio, while we work on lyrics. Even though all three of us compose the music, Horia is the most word-savvy of us, so he is responsible for the lively metaphors found in our songs.

 

We all chip in and bounce ideas off of each other, always having a clear sense what the story of the song should be. It’s usually just about finding the right combination of words to paint the picture that’s already in our minds.

Elaborate on your work and achievement so far in your music career.

Some of the highlights of our career so far are radio plays on BBC Radio 6 (BBC Introducing) and Radio Guerilla, being featured on Vice.com and Berlin ArtParasites, as well as winning the Spellground Newcomers competition. And, of course, the release of our Circus EP and ‘Please Stop’ single!

Tell us your opinion on using rhymes dictionary or writing software to develop lyrics. 

Inspiration can come from unexpected places – sometimes a word on a billboard sparks an entire song, so seeing one in a dictionary or a website is no different, at least in our view. The most important issue here is the song and its message. Whatever you use to achieve it is fair game!

 

We believe there is nothing wrong with using dictionaries or writing software if these help you get your message across.

Discuss the music industry.

The music industry is in a fascinating state nowadays. On one hand, you still have massive record labels promoting extremely successful and established artists, but on the other there are countless amazing artists bypassing these routes and taking full advantage of the age of social media and online platforms to promote their music, and in the case of a few (kudos Chance the Rapper), even win Grammys! Some call it the democratization of the music industry – but both sides are interdependent.

 

It’s an exciting time which makes for a very interesting and fruitful environment for up-and-coming creators and bands like us.

Elaborate on how you prepare yourself for a recording session.

Most of our music is currently made on the computer via virtual instruments and samples, so the process of recording is somewhat different to the traditional way of cutting a record. That being said, we want to maintain the ‘human’ presence in our tracks as much as possible.

 

Consequently, we avoid aligning everything to the grid and actually incorporate real drums, guitars, and vocals into every song.

 

However, since we record all of these in the comfort of our own homes (thanks to recent technological developments), preparing for a recording session is much less of a chore than it was until a few years ago.

 

Practicing parts hasn’t changed, of course, as you need to be on top of your game before going to tape, so to speak. But once every nuance of the performance has been rehearsed, laying the part down has become much more enjoyable, as you don’t have the pressure of a standard studio (and its daily recording costs) to worry about. Just relax and play (and don’t forget to hit the ‘record’ button)!

Brief us on your preference in terms of tempo as in up-tempo, mid-tempo or slow tempo.

We mostly prefer composing mid to up-tempo songs. However, we often found that subdivisions and creative groupings of note durations inside a particular groove are much more important in conveying the energy level of a song than simply the tempo.

Discuss your shows or live performance.

We’ve always tried to infuse our live performances with as much energy as possible. The drums and percussion elements are a huge part of our set, and we use samples and backing tracks to emphasize the rhythmic character of our songs.

 

A sense of depth is equally important, and we use Ableton Live to trigger synth samples and effects, so the end result is both high in energy and sonically stimulating.

Discuss the storyline of the song.

The narrative of the story is broken down into two distinct episodes, following the protagonist’s mental states. She just broke up with her partner and is about to leave their apartment for the very last time. Ignoring the pleas and reproaches of the other person, she tries to make a plan for what to do next. Who gets the records? Who gets the CDs? What about the photos?

 

Later on, the plan is made as she realizes that a break-up is not the end of the line. Life goes on and she can choose to be happy instead of moping around in the state she was in before deciding to break it off.

 

The chorus highlights this, as she announces, to both her now-ex and the world, that she’s had enough. She’ll find love elsewhere for sure. It’s a message of empowerment, for sure.

Tell us what makes this song unique from others.

‘Please Stop’ represents an unashamedly embrace of the 90s dance music we grew up with. Nonetheless, we infuse it with contemporary production techniques and samples, as well as stylistic elements from genres as diverse as trap and reggaeton to create something that complements the lyrics.

 

The story is also uniquely told, from the perspective of a female protagonist. Such topics have been tackled almost exclusively from a male perspective (particularly if the songwriters were men!), so it is refreshing to hear such sentiments expressed by a woman protagonist.

Tell us the theme of most of your compositions.

While we try to tackle many themes, the one through-line would be dealing with the day to day problems that we, as most others, face.

 

From the most banal (social media and its downsides, daily stress), the more esoteric (plunging into metaphorical black holes), to the more personal (getting over a break-up), we try to address each issue by offering silver linings.

 

Each of us has been through their ups and downs, but we managed to get over everything relatively unscathed, thanks in part to music.

 

We try to make each song energetic and uplifting, so that people can forget about their daily struggles, even if only for a few minutes.
