From the age of 12 Taylor began developing her craft; writing songs from experiences she’d had from difficult times of acceptance and her ability to read situations.

And after just a year of performing live she began recording and released her debut EP ‘Jealous Eyes’, which led on to the second release ‘Take a Look at me Now’.

She launched her EP ‘Broken Reflection’ in October 2017 and shortly after began working closely with a London based studio perfecting her artistry.

Tell us your real names, country of birth and childhood experience.

Taylor-Louise Thomas is my real name, my first name usually confuses people, but it is my real legal double barrelled first name.

I was born and raised in Germany as my dad was based there during his time serving for the British Army, and my mum moved over from the UK to be with him… I had a tough time at school; my upbringing was so different to everyone that I knew.

This made it difficult for me to ‘fit’ in’ and writing became my coping mechanism, after picking up my dad’s guitar and learning to play.

.

.

.

Tell us your academic qualification.

I enjoyed learning, all the time. I studied hard and took pride in it whilst I was at school and college; I’ve always wanted to do well with anything I do. Outside of this I have a diploma in performing arts and also a diploma in music theatre.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music career, band name, experience and skills.

I currently have 3 EPs under my belt and many opportunities over the past 8 years, including BBC introducing ‘Band of the Month’ in 2016.

As a solo artist I gigged for many years doing covers and originals, I’d then began working with other musicians and slowly experimented as a duo, trio and full band set up.

I decided to stick with my first name as my artist name purely because it’s so unique, it was something that I used to shy away from, but now I fully embrace it and that’s a message that I want to share with others ‘Be proud of being you’.

.

.

.

Tell us your genre and idea behind your music video or song.

It’s hard to describe a specific genre, I’d subcategorize my sound as alternative-pop, although I like to have catchy elements in my music, I also like to experiment with hints of other genres involved.

The video for the upcoming single is simple; I wanted something really stripped back and raw to emphasize the lyrical content…

.

.

Tell us how you are promoting your music.

Gigs, social media, radio, interviews and so on.

One of the most rewarding ways I’ve found is connecting with artists and musicians where we have a mutual enjoyment of each other’s sound, and promote each other to our listeners.

Supporting those acts or having them support you is a really great way to attract new followings.

”A young woman with big ambitions who is addicted to the stage”

– Radio Warwickshire

”One of the most promising young female artists around – Taylor-Louise – remember that name…”

– Paul Merrick

“Anyone who can start a set with a song as strong as “Twenty-Three” surely has a powerful body of work. Indeed it’s remarkable that although her work clearly goes from strength to strength, even a song written when she was 13 (“Jealous Eyes”) is still a really valid part of the set: what a prodigy!”

Explain the story behind the song.

Blessed with a Curse was inspired by the patterns in my life, with any adventure, activity or group of people that I meet, I am always pulled back to the music.

I have to write, I have to perform; I have to express what I feel. And although a lot of people see this as a blessing, it comes with many tough sacrifices and personal hurdles.

.

.

.

State the names of other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director.

Kev Stanley has been playing drums for me for as long as I can remember, he plays for another local band too.

We met at an open mic and began jamming together and that’s when it started.

Tom Gedney is an incredible multi-talented musician, we’ve known each other mutually for a while but only recently connected to work together on projects and he’s brought a great new flavour to the mix.

Emilie Cotterill has worked on my upcoming video, this is my first time working with her but she’s managed to capture exactly what I was looking for…

.

.

.

Elaborate on the song and music video.

The song has a very earthy / organic soft-rock vibe to it. There is nothing to over produce which keeps with the rawness of the lyrics.

It focuses on my relationship with music and the world around me, my personal life.

I am so grateful to be able to write, play and make music but at the same time I have my low moments where I feel it’d be easier to ‘fit in’ if I had a normal job, normal social etc.

The song is an apology to me; a lesson to accept that music is simply something I have to do, and that there are things that will set my lifestyle apart from others.

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music business, your experience and your future goal.

I released my first EP when I was 14. Since then I have worked with different musicians, producers, artist and this really helped to find out the process in which I liked to make my music.

Because I’m quite open-minded I like to welcome different opinions and ideas, I find experimenting was the best way to find out more about myself as an artist.

My goal is to inspire others, in whatever it is they want to achieve, to simply say ‘don’t give up, I’ve been through a lot, anything is possible’.

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you unique from others.

I’m not sure what specifically makes me unique from others. I’d like to think I’m similar to everyone else, because if I wasn’t nobody would connect or relate to my songs, the only difference is that I’m saying how I feel out loud.

I find singing to be one of the most vulnerable things any person could do, but then to also sing words that you have wrote, and FELT that’s just another level, and I commend anyone who can do this.

In terms of setting myself apart from other artists, I find that making music for me is what it’s really about, I write the truth – Anything that doesn’t mean anything is not worth saying – and if the lyrics resonate with people then I know I have achieved something (The lyrics are the most important part of a song to me).

.

.

.

Tell us your weakness and strength pertaining music.

I think the only weakness anybody can ever face is oneself. The only person who will ever stop you from learning, changing, growing and striving is you.

Strength of mine is being very hands on, organized and driven. I like to have a plan and be in the know to everything that is going on.

.

.

.

List your five favourite songs including the artists.

When The Party’s Over – Billie Eilish

Someone You Loved – Lewis Capaldi

Why Her Not Me – Grace Carter

Power Over Me – Dermot Kennedy

Mother tongue – Bring Me The Horizon

.

.

.

Tell us your position on “Do It Yourself” and signing to a major label.

There are pros and cons to both, I’d definitely say to do as much yourself as possible, but sometimes there are just some things that you can’t do…

Labels have the right contacts that can help you. Being backed by a label means more people are likely to listen up and hear what you / they have to say about you as an artist.

.

.

.

Tell us other activities you are pursuing apart from music.

I love health and fitness; it’s a big passion, hobby and therapeutic release for me.

In keeping with music I enjoy coaching in songwriting, performing and learning basic guitar to people and encouraging them in their first steps to playing live.

I find a good way to enforce what you’ve learned and set it in your mind, is to pass on the information / what you know and have learned.

.

.

.

List your various works.

Jealous Eyes, Take a Look at Me Now and Broken Reflection are three of the EPs I have released in the past, alongside my latest single Twenty-Three.

.

.

.

State the official date of release.

Blessed with a Curse is due for release Friday 8th March!

.

.

.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.

My artist name and real first name is Taylor-Louise, I don’t know anybody with a first name like it so I felt no need to change my stage name from my real name.

.

.

.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

Blessed with a Curse is the idea of this reoccurrence in my life, making music is beautiful in so many ways but I am only able to do this because I feel emotions so intensely, sometimes I wish I didn’t as it can be really overwhelming at times. But if I didn’t, I probably wouldn’t be writing as a release, so I’ve learned to see it as my advantage…

.

.

.

State the title of the album and the reason for choosing the title.

“Black Heart”, is both the title of the EP and the title of a featured track. It represents both images of ‘Black’ being darkness and dull feelings, as well as ‘heart’ relating to love and affection.

It plays on the idea of ying and yang, meaning you can’t have the good times without the bad.

For me all of the tracks highlight a different emotion and stage of feeling, I learned that love is real and when It’s true it can be painful but this doesn’t mean it wasn’t beautiful. I feel the artwork designed by Ayse Herring captures this completely!
