Jordan Kent Waterman (born February 1, 1992) known by his stage name, J. Kent, is a hip hop artist and singer-songwriter based out of Orange County, CA originally born and raised in Australia.

Kent immediately strikes comparisons to hip hop heavyweights such as Eminem and Macklemore, yet blissfully creates a unique sound free from influence that constructs a separate lane and unfolds his own vision, crossing him over from the underground hip hop scene to a mainstream artist.

Currently working on his debut full-length album entitled “Open Book” that will see a late 2019 release and will be available on all streaming platforms.

.

.

.

Tell us your name, country of birth and childhood experience.

My full name is Jordan Kent Waterman, and I was born and raised in West Wallsend, Australia, growing up with very humble beginnings and plenty of love.

.

.

.

State your academic qualification.

Schools have never been my objective, so I got my GED at a young age, as I was preoccupied with other things, good and bad.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music career, band name, experience, and skills.

I’m a hip hop artist and singer-songwriter, and I go by the name J. Kent, an obvious abbreviation of my real name.

I’ve been rapping since I was 11 years old and only took myself seriously when I was about 17, which then spawned this passion to no matter what make it as an artist, no plan B, so here I am 10 years later, taking my first real steps to a career in music.

.

.

.

Tell us your genre and idea behind your music video or song.

I make many different styles of music but majorly Hip Hop/Rap /Trap as well as Indie Pop/Indie Rock.

.

.

.

Tell us how to run a record label based on your experience as an artist.

A label is becoming less and less needed or wanted, as independent artists’ tools are so easily accessible.

However, labels are able to reach a different, larger platform when the time’s right, therefore I feel the best way to run a label, is to be a marketing and social media powerhouse for its artists and focus solely on booking shows and tours, helping to create visuals, and navigating the legality of the music industry.

Also, it’d be nice for a label to put the art first, instead of the money.

.

.

.

Tell us how you are promoting your music.

Ads, Blogs, Social Media, YouTube, SoundCloud, Spotify, ReverbNation, Networking, Friends & Family, In Person, Shows, etc. Every way I can research.

.

.

.

Explain the story behind the song.

The song/concept is the thoughts and questions aimed at my future self, asking what I’ve become and how I’ve lived my life.

.

.

.

List the radio stations, television stations, and blogs that have aired or featured your new song.

Word Is Bond, 93.1 Houston Hip Hop…

.

.

.

State the names of other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director.

Song by J. Kent / Song Production by Young Taylor / Video Production by Davone “Daylyt” Campbell.

.

.

.

Elaborate on the song and music video.

The music video is myself, sitting on a park bench, writing a letter to my future self, while an apparition of my mind’s thoughts sits next to me, trying to talk to me.

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music business, your experience, and your future goal.

Been making music for 10 years now, but only this year can I say I’ve truly been in the music industry, and so far it’s very disheartening, inspiring, and liberating all at the same time.

A lot of learning. A lot of ups and downs, and mistakes, but on this journey learning how to market and take my music from my bedroom to the stage, it’s been rewarding and empowering, and has always been the true passion of mine that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you unique from others.

We are ALL unique. It’s just learning yourself and staying true to that once you do, not blending or fitting in.

Music, love, personalities, expression, all things are different and the same. Just be you.

.

.

.

Tell us your weakness and strength pertaining to music.

I’m very comfortable and confident in the hip hop realm, as well as writing and composing music, but my singing voice is by far the weakest link, which I’m working on.

.

.

.

List your five favorite artists.

Too many. Artists like 2pac and Eminem, to Leon Bridges and Otis Redding, to Kaleo and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and everything in between.

.

.

.

Tell us other activities you are pursuing apart from music.

I love being creative and pursuing business, so I own a carpet, tile, and upholstery cleaning business, started my independent record label, two clothing lines in creation, a list of inventions, a couple of movie screenplays, and dabbling into acting and directing.

.

.

.

List your various works.

Debut Mixtape – “Carriage Estates” out now.

.

.

.

State the official date of release.

03/22/19.

.

.

.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.

Kent, an abbreviation of my real name but more importantly, my middle name Kent is named after my grandpa, who was the most honest person I’ve known and the only reason my whole family came to America, to begin with, as he was dying from cancer.

.

.

.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

20 Years Later. It is to confirm the concept of the song, which is questioning my future self, 20 years from now.

.

.

.

State the title of the album and the reason for choosing the title.

Carriage Estates is the title of my debut mixtape and the same name of the mobile home park I currently live at, which is the concept behind the project.

It’s the place where I’ve lived for the past eight years, which signifies all the pain, emotion, ups and downs, and life I’ve experienced over that time. It’s a mark to say I’m starting from the bottom, right now.
