Tell us your names, country of birth and childhood experience.

James Pak, professionally known as NyuKyung was born in Tacoma, Washington.

I started music at the age of 9 and began making music at age 11.

I started off on Myspace and graduated to YouTube.

.

.

.

State your academic qualification.

Senior at Simon Fraser University: undergraduate in Criminology.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music career, band name, experience, and skills.

I am relatively new in the music industry and my publishing company is a record label out of Houston, Texas called UrbaNomyx.

My skills as an artist include songwriting, mixing, singing, and rapping.

I have been working on my craft and developing my sound at an early age so I am very efficient and skilled when it comes to creating music.

.

.

.

Tell us your genre and idea behind your music video or song.

Hip Hop/Rap.

I wanted to make a cinematic type of video that could accurately display the emotions of the song.

.

.

.

Tell us how to run a record label based on your experience as an artist.

From my experience I realized a lot of issues between artists and labels come from a lack of transparency.

A good record label should not hide things from their artists and respect the creativity of each individual.

I understand music is a business but conflicts would be avoided if priority is given to communication between the artists and the labels than the amount of money to be made.

.

.

.

Tell us how you are promoting your music.

Facebook/Instagram Ads, YouTube Ads.

I am working with three professional indie marketing firms…

.

.

.

Explain the story behind the song.

I remember feeling alone and trapped nearing the end of my football career and college degree, with only $50 to my name; frustrated and angry I sat in my room brainstorming on how to make my dream into a reality.

I started looking through beats and found one that spoke to me; I downloaded the track onto my phone and went outside in the snow for some fresh air to clear my head.

As I sat in the cold night listening to the instrumental on repeat, the words and melody came to me immediately.

The first time I listened back to the finished version of the song, I knew that this was going to be the track that would launch my career.

Elaborate on the song and music video.

‘Let It Spray’ is my first official release and it means a lot to me because the song originates from a place of doubt and insecurity. I really poured my heart out into the song and my videographer did an amazing job capturing every detail.

.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music business, your experience, and your future goal.

I have been making music since I was 11 but only been in the music business officially for five months. The journey so far has been unreal. The feedback and success I have had over these past five months are mind-blowing. I never expected things to move so quickly.

In this short amount of time I was chosen for the Anno Domini Cypher, won the 2019 Anno Domini Contest,  been on BuzzFeed, Hip Hop Canada, The London Post, and many other Hip Hop websites and blogs.

I want to be one of the greatest to ever pick up a mic and leave a lasting legacy with my music.

.

.

.

Tell us what makes you unique from others.

Everything about me from my appearance to my sound is unique. There are other Asian artists out there but I bring something completely different to the table.

.

.

.

Tell us your weakness and strength pertaining to music.

My biggest strength is my work ethic and willingness to learn and ask for help. At the end of the day, I am a fan of Hip Hop before I am an artist.

My biggest weakness is that I am my biggest critic. My competitive nature and obsession with improvement can really have an effect on my mental health. This is why it is important for me to continue and find a balance in everything I do.

.

.

.

Tell us your position on “Do It Yourself” and signing to a major label.

Both have their benefits but ideally, I would do everything myself and stay independent. I’m a big fan of Nipsey Hussle and he is an artist I want to emulate. The way Nipsey made an impact on the industry all while owning his own masters and being his own boss is what I strive for.

However, I am not opposed to signing to a major label under the right conditions. Every artist has their own journey and right now I am just taking advantage of every opportunity that comes my way.

.

.

.

Tell us other activities you are pursuing apart from music.

I am a college football player so a lot of my free time is spent training. It gets difficult trying to balance music, football, and school but it will all worth it at the end.

.

.

.

State the official date of release.

May 10th, 2019.

.

.

.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.

I go by NyuKyung (Pronounced New King) and it’s actually my Korean name. It’s supposed to be pronounced (No – Gyung) but people had a lot of difficulties pronouncing it so I and my manager discussed it and decided to change it to New King and capitalize the K.

.

.

.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

The song is entitled ‘Let It Spray’ because when I made the song I was extremely frustrated and wanted to let loose and wreak havoc on everything around me. I had just invested a lot of money into my home studio and had no idea where I was going to go from there.

Birmingham born and bred artist Esther Turner was exposed to music from a young age with influences of Joni Mitchell, Craig David, Avril Lavigne Micheal Jackson, which later encouraged her to seek her own musical preferences.

She has supported a number of high profile acts including Ed Sheeran, The Jacksons, and Boyzlife.

Esther is as much at home on the big stage as busking on the high street but she can usually be found playing local live music venues. Keen to further develop her sound.

The recent evolution of her acoustic style has seen her experimenting with a growing number of electronic effects units to produce a complex and engaging live performance.

Esther is working hard on her original records (plus accompanying music videos on YouTube).

2019 BBC Introducing WM made her brand single ‘The Great Escape’ February track of the month and has previously described her as a ‘grafter’ and ‘busking legend.’

.

.

.

Discuss the story behind your music video.

The video is set in a posh house where “Madame Delacroix’’ is teaching me how to be a “lady.”

I start to rebel throughout the video and the outcome is that you don’t need to be someone you are not and we should embrace each other’s differences.

In the video, I am wearing a bright pink frilly dress, which is the complete opposite to what I would ever wear as I’m a tomboy and I’m just being true to myself.

.

.

.

State the name of the locations in your music video.

My mom’s friend kindly let me use her house for the day to film.

.

.

.

List the members of the crew that produced this video and use this opportunity to thank them.

My friends at Pixel Pro Media: Brad O’Neil and Stefan Paiu.

.

.

.

Explain your emotional state while shooting the music video.

The video was a lot of fun to film everyone was bouncing ideas off each other and it was also a lovely experience to have my Nan acting in the video; her role was “Madame Delacroix.”

.

.

.

Discuss your music career so far.

I’ve been singing since the age of 10. After college I turned down a place at Birmingham University to concentrate on my music career since then I have been gigging up and down the country and busking to promote my music.

.

.

.

It makes me happy that I can mix a little bit of acting with my music.

.

.

.

Tell us your gains and losses in the music business.

My gains are that I love performing; I do nine gigs a week and everything I earn goes back into my music – So that I’m able to create my videos and have studio time and travel. 🙂

Always practicing and regularly performing.

I am constantly promoting my music.

.

.

.

Tell us if you an independent artist or you are a signed artist and tell us how you run your music career.

I’m an independent artist, I feel social media is the key place to promote my music, also performing so I do a lot of busking and I have a sign so that people can easily find me on social media.

I’m passionate about making my videos and songs upbeat and sharing positive vibes.

.

.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

‘Never Change’ – It’s about being true to yourself, your beliefs and true loves.

Sometimes others might express their opinions and tell you ‘you are living your life wrong and say you should or shouldn’t be doing things.’

But you shouldn’t have to change yourself for anyone else…

I mainly sit at my keyboard and focus on the song mood and message then I’d put chord progressions to support my ideas but I always have a melody first.
