The southern French duet So?Mash! brings again its fresh sounds to your ears with beats by Mat Hours and Mash Puppit’s rich vocals jumping between sweet melodies and arrogant flows.

The two artists, both curious and energetic, draw from their diversity in music composition to build an original universe in current electronic pop music.

Full of paradox between its question mark and its exclamation mark, the music of So?Mash! deals often with the difficulties of life…

After promising debut EPs series between 2010 and 2013, the band disappeared as Mat Hours was focused on Temenik Electric, the Arabian rock project for which he produced two LPs and made international tour and Mash Puppit lived between France and Mexico…

Tell us how you develop your sound and style to make it different from other musicians.

We don’t specially try to make it different, we take inspiration on many different styles through the music we listen everywhere and then the fusion or our two universes make our sound unique.

Mat and I don’t listen to the same tracks, so we share our sensitivities and find the balance, that’s where the magic happens.

.

.

.

Tell us your opinion on the way new artists are coming up and the frequent release of songs.

This is amazing – So enjoyable that any creative people can now express their feelings and their love of music around the world and share knowledge and poetry with affordable tools.

.

.

.

State your experience as a musician.

Andrea: First enjoying on the carpet of my parents living room, then learning saxophone and singing and recording in my room with audio cassettes and CDs, then on stage with a teenage emo-pop band, then on art schools during the day and by night on the electro-hip-hop scene in Marseille, Montreal, Mexico…then in the studio and stage, forever!

Mat: Began with my brother on percussions when we were kids, then bass guitar when I was teen. A few years after I bought an MPC, and also started music on computers, I never quit until that time!

.

.

.

Tell us your opinion on streaming and digital download of songs.

Andrea: That’s an evolution, not so well organized but pretty fun and useful; we have to go with it! I just wish people to respect the creation and its value; education and ludic platforms could help new generations to support the artist through any kind of financing or participation.

Mat: Really cool new way to listen to music, lighter than the thousands of CDs I had before!!! And we can access all the music in one click, that’s crazy!!

.

.

.

Tell us your goals and plans.

Andrea: Unity, peace love and having fun…and a world tour!

Mat: Create songs for ever and share them with people!

.

.

.

Tell us five current artists that are your favourite.

Andrea: Erykah Badu, Hiatus Kaiyote, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler The Creator, Camélia Jordana.

Mat: Charli XCX, Mura Masa, DJ Snake, San Holo, Billie Eilish.

.

.

Tell us your dream and hope for the future.

That we will react quickly enough to save our planet and its magnificent nature and diversity.

.

.

.

Tell us what has changed in the music industry.

It’s now easy to produce and release music, but it’s also still difficult to be listened to!

.

.

.

Tell us your opinion on television/radio stations playing the same songs from established artists and giving little chances to independent artists.

People can be so lazy and greedy sometimes, that’s a shame and a hopeless situation I think, but the little keep fighting!

.

.

.

Tell us the challenges independent artists are facing and how to tackle it.

Artists need to spend so much energy in marketing, documenting and communicating that they somehow neglect the quality of their music to be in the music industry

.

.

.

Tell us your opinion on using social media to promote music online.

Very useful if you have people following you, they should be happy to know you have new music released! Although, we don’t really like spending time promoting our new music ourselves because most of the people we reach for the moment are friends and families and we don’t like to be pushy, so for now, we shyly do it until we can afford to spend more time or money on this…

.

.

.

Tell us about your music career.

Writing, producing songs and play them but for the moment, it’s not a full time paid job!

Our music allowed us to travel to different places, and meet a lot of people and artists that we fancy: like Bonobo or Anti Pop Consortium with who we shared a few days of studio sessions and live gigs; thanks to their French tour manager that likes our music. Nice and talented people…

.

.

.

Tell us what still motivates you to go on with your music career.

It’s a passion, to create music, create songs!

It’s a particular emotion when you find ideas that bring you to a new song, and I think this is enough to go on with our music career.

.

.

.

Tell us about you as a person.

Andrea: I share my apartment with a young pianist and foreign guests, I spend most of my time doing artwork, songs, clothes, painting and listening to music

Mat: My girlfriend and I are parents of two lovely children that we love to see growing every day.

.

.

.

Elaborate on the story behind the song.

“Find a Way” began with the feelings of Andrea at this moment, a real changing step, a new departure in life, that is the moment when she decided to quit an administrative work in the art school of Marseille to travel to Mexico for a few months living her passion of music and art full time, we tried to follow a line of a synth-pop song with a lot of different parts mixed, driven by the voice.

.

.

.

Tell us the process involved in making this song.

1 mic, 1 sound card, 1 laptop, 2 speakers and that’s it for the hardware. We started with a chord progression, and then found melodies and lyrics, and then producing.

.

.

.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.

So?Mash! is a mix of our two music nicknames at the moment we created the band. Just a name that is a mess to google or to deal with…especially on the typography or design on the covers of the albums/EP/singles…

.

.

.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

For each difficult situation in life, there’s always a path, a way, you just have to find it and go for it.

.

.

.

State the title of the album and the reason for choosing the title.

We would like to release a few more songs before a new album, coming soon, stay tuned!
