Discuss your history.

I’m Sukh, a singer-songwriter/doctor. I guess it all started when I scored some music for a film and after that, I remember seeing a few live bands and thinking that this was what I wanted to do.

I used to sit at the piano and just try to figure out how to write for hours at a time.

Fast forward a few years and I’ve managed to keep it alive whilst completing my medical studies.

Now I’m free to get the music out there into the wild.

.

.

.

Describe yourself as an artist.

I’m a bit of a perfectionist and try to make sure the way I imagine the song to be is the way it ends up. I write a lot and I can be merciless with what I keep and what gets scrapped. Lyrics matter and stories matter to me.

.

.

.

Tell us the genre of your music.

It’s very variable. Every project I tackle a new genre. Right now I would say it is indie pop music.

.

.

.

Tell us the story behind your album.

Galactic Love Machine is an album about coming together and it touches on the nature of dreams and ambitions and pushing through adversity. It’s a pretty optimistic record.

.

.

.

Tell us the problems you are facing as a musician.

I think now it’s not enough to be just a musician. Maybe that was the case 10-20 years ago.

But since the music industry took a bit of a hit with Napster then streaming you have to prove yourself a lot more now.

You have to run the business which is time-consuming and may not always be what you enjoy the most.

Social media, promotions – you have to learn to be a salesman which is something I’m still working on. It’s not my natural state.

Discuss the recording and production of the song.

The album was recorded gradually over the course of a year at Blueprint Studios in Manchester. We got a lovely string quartet in and a gospel choir in too.

.

.

List the names of blogs, radio or television stations that have supported you so far.

BBC Radio Introducing, Absolute Radio, Amazing Radio. Had support from HuffPost and Louder Than War to name a few.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your music career, experience, and future goals.

After releasing two records so far I have plans to produce and record one record a year for the foreseeable future.

.

.

.

Brief us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

I tend to tackle themes within my albums but I don’t write in one particular style at one given time.

Over time songs build up and they then go into a group of work that’s coherent with it.

The first record ‘Kings’ was about self-love and empowerment and ‘Galactic Love Machine’ was about coming together and happiness – The next one I suspect is going to take a darker turn.

.

.

.

Brief us the top-secret behind making a hit song.

To write a hit song – I guess write a song less than three minutes, that is catchy, sounds modern and gets stuck in people’s heads. I don’t subscribe to this model often and often run past three minutes.

.

.

.

Tell the piece of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

Be true to yourself and the music. It’s not about making money and if you’re in it for that reason go and find a better career. Ultimately music should be about telling the truth – Your truth.

.

.

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

Previously we did it stages but now I prefer to record as a band. It feels more organic. Lyrics are written well in advance but are normally the last thing to come together.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.

I would make lots of records and support other underground artists to make great work. It would be great to create a strong musical hub of artists in Manchester.

.

.

.

Discuss music promotion and how you are boosting your fan base.

Through social media, through blogs and through live gigs.

.

.

.

Tell us how you manage other activities with your music career.

I try and balance my life as a doctor and a musician. It’s not always easy haha.

.

.

.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.

Sukh – it’s my name.
