Donatella Canepa, born in Genova on March 6, 1992, is an Italian guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and composer.

Her career as a soloist began in 2016, after five recording experiences – between albums and EPs – with the bands Coffee Shock, Nomadama, Salto Nel Buio, The Strange Connections, and Cantina Club.

Thanks to these projects, some of the pieces composed by Donatella Canepa were broadcast on National radio and TV (Rai, Mediaset). Moreover, together with the band Salto Nel Buio she took part in the Mei Supersound 2012.

The album “All’Inizio Del Mondo”, entirely edited by her, is released in 2017. The work draws good judgment by the critics and the name Donatella Canepa appears on the pages of the prestigious magazine Classic Rock Italia.

In 2018 she releases her second album “Nautilus”, distributed by the established Italian label Top Records and she produces for Soundiva her third album “L’Orizzonte Degli Eventi” created for the library music.

Discuss how you develop your melody.

Melody is something you can build on a piece of barren land. I try to do it by staring at the landscape.

.

.

.

Tell us your source of inspiration.

Planet – Earth.

.

.

.

Tell us the most memorable experience in your music career.

Currently, there are at least three events: the live at Mei Supersound in Faenza in 2012, the presence among the artists selected by the Classic Rock Italia magazine in June 2017, and the cooperation with the Top Records label in 2018.

Discuss how you build your song.

Playing is above all a game. When we compose a song, we generally start with the melody and then focus on harmony; however, the opposite is true as well. I like to change the rules.

.

.

.

Tell us how you ensure your music inspires others.

I do not believe that the interest of the listeners can be voluntarily catalyzed. It happens or doesn’t happen.

.

.

.

Discuss the relevance of promotion to the music business.

Today, promotion is more important than it used to be in the past. The onset of digital technology has made music accessible to everyone, therefore it easy to create and spread music, but the considerable amount of music produced gets lost on the Internet. Without promotion you are invisible. You cannot find an artist if you are not aware of his existence!

.

.

.

Tell us what you will do apart from music.

If it is true that music is just a soundtrack, then I have plenty of free time.

List the names of the instruments you can play.

Bass

Ukulele.

Tell us the piece of advice you will give to a new artist on entering the music chart.

As soon as you reach a destination, you’ll just have to start again.

.

.

.

Elaborate on melody and rhythm.

“Mårtesdal” is a lively and rhythmic song. Besides the guitar solo, the lead guitars are somehow overwhelmed by rhythm guitars, bass, and drums to give way to the composition.

State your future goals.

I hope that I’ll be able to keep on working in the field of library music and follow new exciting roads.

It took a long time to record “All’Inizio Del Mondo.” I didn’t want to use computer-aided shortcuts, so I had to be very accurate and meticulous during the recordings, and each track was recorded several times.

.

.

.

Tell us the most difficult part of the recording.

The main difficulty turned out to be precisely the time taken: after a couple of months taken by recordings, you are usually more tense and confused.

.

.

.

Discuss the greatest mistake you have ever made in your music career.

During a show in which we were taking parts as guests, a colleague of mine, our staff and I mistook a famous singer for a bartender. Our mistake turned into a very ridiculous sketch!

.

.

.

Tell us how you build up your composition.

Guitar and pick, is there anything else?

.

.

.

Discuss the relevance of music.

Music is the language shared by all the people.

.

.

.

Elaborate on the song.

“Mårtesdal” was composed in the outskirts of Stockholm, near the tram stop from after which it is named. It is an energetic rock/metal song with urban elements and pioneering arrangements.

.

.

.

Elaborate on the title of the album.

“All’Inizio Del Mondo” is a journey which ends in Stockholm. If we regard the extreme North as the beginning of the world, the destination of the journey becomes the beginning of a new adventure.

”All’Inizio Del Mondo” (At The Beginning Of The World), the first solo album of the Italian guitarist Donatella Canepa…

It’s all guitar, bass, drums, and pretty much nothing else. An instrumental concept album where the guitar – its absolute star – also voices the least conventional sounds, turning at times into the water, ice, railway even… because “sooner or later everything blends, just like snow on the sea.”
